Coffee Cup Size

Over the last month I have visited 4 different independent cafes in various towns in England. I chose to go to independent cafes rather than the national big name ones. I always drink an Americano (black coffee with cold milk). The size of the cup or mug was so small. Literally 4 gulps and it was empty. The smallest mug measured 2.5cm across at the base. Another cafe used small tea cups suitable for a small child. What an absolute rip off! They've taken shrinkflation too far. From now on if I go into an independent cafe I will ask to see the size of the mug before ordering. Alternatively I will go to a big chain coffee shop, at least I can get a decent quantity to drink.

A traditional UK teacup size is 170ml (a breakfast cup is larger)
A traditional UK coffee cup size is 60ml (a demi-tasse is 80ml)

(information gleaned from sites selling Royal Albert china)

An interesting blog article about American coffee cup sizes in commercial premises here:

I no longer drink coffee so don't need to know what all the different names are. I remember when coffee was instant or filter and black or white, so much easier.

Seakay, I am confused. So a full cup is 60ml, and a half cup 80ml !?!

Yes I thought Americano was black no milk too. Maybe she's getting an expresso?? Tiny cup...

Sounds like you're getting an 'expresso' size cup....

If drinking coffee in Spain or other European countries you tend to get a smaller cup, like a teacup. And you have to stipulate if you want milk or it comes black.
In Italy is all expresso shots knocked back within seconds.
Was surprised that in parts of the US, though people are coffee drinkers, the coffee was so weak and flavourless, was better in NYC and Seattle.

I prefer an independant coffeeshop at any time, and Costa or Nero to Starbucks but in a real coffee-crisis-moment I will give in. About the size of the cups : I prefer my coffee ristretto, strong and hot, in tiny cups. If and when I feel like sipping for a while I order an latte, and yes I like a big cup or a tall glass for it.
