AIBU that as a new grandparents, who is refered to as Nanny by my kids and myself, my mother also wants to be called Nanny?

Back story she has 6 grand children already and 2 great grandchildren, from my children, her grandchildren
On a side note she also refers to my step dad of 53 years as 'Dad', not your dad so it sounds like we're sisters and he's our dad.

I love Ooooeeee! grin

I had 'Nannan's when little, then they became Gran, my Mum was Granny to my children and I am Nanna to my grandchildren. There are so many names with different nationalities, whatever people are comfortable with and whatever the children wish.

MissAdventure Thu 05-Dec-24 20:33:14

We called my nan, well, nan, obviously, but also nana, nanny, whatever we felt like at the time.

Miss Adventure
Thank you so much for your humourous comments "you employed a goat" etc. I think a few others on here are just plain rude and have a superiority complex when making the " nanny is a goat or someone that was paid help etc! comments and they do it knowing full well that certain GNs are called Nanny by their beloved GCs.

🐐 you're welcome. smile

I’m Nanny to my 4 grandchildren. My mum was Nana to my children when they grew older. However as young children they referred to my parents as Nana and Grandad Peep (my dad’s name was Pete) and my in laws as Nanny and Grandad Pop (we used to call my father in law Pop)!! So when I see posts on here regarding what to call grandparents I just think the children will work it out for themselves!

Does it really matter? Why not be grateful that you have your own mother in your life and also your own AC and GC - four generations!!

Aldom Sun 08-Dec-24 09:09:43

I don't understand your post Astitchintime, who are you suggesting should be grateful?

Witzend Sun 08-Dec-24 09:15:41

TBH I never really liked ‘Nanny’, but that was what both elder Gdcs called me before they sussed out how to say ‘Granny’.
From them, it was music to my ears, though. 😍

My grandmother refused to be called 'Nanny' on the grounds that she was not a goat.

Shinamae Sun 08-Dec-24 22:12:55

Nana, I refuse to answer to granny 🤦‍♀️ 😂
They actually think it’s quite funny And if they want to wind me up…..😁

The OP, I think, Aldom

I suppose not everyone has four generations in their families, all in touch and making an issue of who should be called by what name.

We have four generations in our family.
The oldest were both "grandma" so I didn't want to repeat that.
One of my own grandmothers had been "granny" so I decided to revive that name 🤗

My daughters calked my mother Nan. My grandson calls me
Gran, elder granddaughter it’s Granny, younger granddaughter
it’s Bro, has been since we played Super Mario together, 20
years ago.

grin
Very fitting for you, Annie

Anniebach Mon 09-Dec-24 11:16:21

MissA she is my Bro too

Granmarderby10 Mon 09-Dec-24 11:20:26

Well my preference kind of speaks for itself. My own Mum loathed Nanna or any variations “I’m not a goat!”etc.

If you’re in regular contact with all sets of grandparent- grand or great, there needs to be some differentiation though.
People living longer makes this a newish dilemma.

MissA she is my Bro too

I bet she is.
It's lovely to be bros.

A real mark of respect.

MissAdventure Mon 09-Dec-24 11:50:20

The other nan to my older grandson is "dawg".
I'm not sure she had that in mind when she wanted us to be "big nan" and "little nan" smile

Anniebach Mon 09-Dec-24 13:02:14

Aw but it’s a term for love , my grandson called me Gag until
he was five . Gag, Dawg, Bro, Nan, Nanny, Granny, Gran are all terms of love and to mock is cruel and no accident

MissInterpreted Mon 09-Dec-24 13:06:06

I'm a good old Scottish granny and proud of it! My children had two 'grannies', so when my son had his son, he wanted him to have a granny too.

Parsley3 Mon 09-Dec-24 13:19:31

Long standing tradition played a part in my family when it came to naming grandparents. We are Grandma and Grandad and the other grandparents were Gran and Pop. I am enjoying reading about all the lovely variations.

Oh yes, it's because she's cool.
A dawg. smile

I’m a Nana or Nana Pebs. Younger GC’s other Grandmother is called Grannie, she is Scottish. My mum when she was still alive was Grandma to my GC

My children called my parents Gumba and Bunga - no idea why but they loved it and were disappointed when they changed to calling them Grandpa and Grandma.
I’m called “Little grandma “( vertically challenged) but would have preferred Granny as that’s what I had called my grandmother, but it was already taken and certainly wasn’t going to make a fuss. I’m the only grandparent left on both sides now so just glad I’m still here.
