AIBU

I know they were only trying to help but

There are men down manholes on our road doing something with Virgin Media cables.

I know because we had a chat before I got in the car.

As I backed down our drive 3 of them leapt out of their holes, one stopped traffic, one stood watching and one stood on the opposite side of the road so he could tell me when it was safe to proceed.

My car is new, has cameras and could probably track a satellite if I only knew how to do it.

DH went out 10 minutes later and was, apparently, left to cope on his own.

This happens quite often..

AIBU to feel offended

I take all the chivalry that is offered.

rafichagran Tue 25-Feb-25 16:07:56

I would not be offended. They were just being nice.

Baggs Tue 25-Feb-25 16:14:17

It's because you had a chat with them. They were repaying your friendliness with theirs. How nice.

Yes, and you’re drop dead gorgeous kittylester and were wearing your new leather hotpants, high heels and crop top when you went out.😁

Would you have been offended if it had been women ?

I doubt a woman would have done it.

kittylester Tue 25-Feb-25 16:57:45

Crossstitchfan - very judgmental.

Oreo Tue 25-Feb-25 17:00:36

I think they thought they were being helpful to you😃

kittylester Tue 25-Feb-25 17:10:23

They didn't help DH.

Curlywhirly Tue 25-Feb-25 17:16:57

It would make my day! How lovely of them to help you, I'd be making them a cup of tea as a thank you!

Maybe because a lot of men would shout, ‘Get out the #%$€* way. I can’t see what’s coming!’ 😂

Women just grit their teeth and smile sweetly.

Claremont Tue 25-Feb-25 17:18:13

As said, DH didnt' stop to chat, did he?

It's hard for men to know what to do these days. I am glad my grandson knows to hold doors and be courteous, and would have been proud of him if he stopped to help.

The most stupid advert on TV, is about the woman who uses a certain skin cream and stands in the tube, and is so delighted that no-one offers her a seat!

henetha Tue 25-Feb-25 17:32:44

Crikey, what is there to be offended about? I'd be delighted at their help.

Actually kitty I thought it was rather sweet!

So do I but I’d be praying this would not be the time I ran a wheel up the kerb or worse…over one of their feet. 😂

Oh goodness merlotgran, that was just what I was thinking too 😂😂😂

I've only done that once, ending up half parked on the pavement, half on the road but that was when I was in my 20s and not an old dear as I am now! 😁
It was in a busy city centre too, and I had a crowd of spectators by the time I'd finally squeezed into the parking slot.

Allira Tue 25-Feb-25 17:39:39

Ps I did not drive over anyone's foot!

I was confused there for a minute, Claremont, thinking it must have been a very large tube of face cream.

(I'll get me coat.)

We frequently travel on the underground in London. If it’s busy, I am very often offered a seat, usually by women.

Surely kittylester there are more important things to be offended by?

You need to change your brand of face cream.

If a chap gave me a seat opened a door or carried my heavy bag and if I drove) help me out a tricky bit I d feel rather flattered that they wanted to be bothered and that they d even noticed me
Don’t let pride override kindness

But, I didn't need help and a man standing behind the car gesticulating is distracting rather than helpful.

I agree about the distracting thing and I tell MrB to go away if he tries it, but I still think the manhole men were just being friendly because you had chatted to them and they appreciated that.

Mind you, you say such things happen quite often...... hmm...🤔

Baggs Tue 25-Feb-25 19:27:18

Maybe you're too friendly, kitty 😁

That drives me mad!!

Was he shouting, ‘Left hand down a bit?’ 😂

Allira Tue 25-Feb-25 20:13:02

They just can't help it, though, can they.
It's very kind, helping the helpless woman.
Like mansplaining.

Barleyfields Tue 25-Feb-25 20:28:19

I’m very happy to be thought helpless! If anyone offers to help me I’m delighted, whether I need help or not. Bring it on!
