AIBU

I know they were only trying to help but

There are men down manholes on our road doing something with Virgin Media cables.

I know because we had a chat before I got in the car.

As I backed down our drive 3 of them leapt out of their holes, one stopped traffic, one stood watching and one stood on the opposite side of the road so he could tell me when it was safe to proceed.

My car is new, has cameras and could probably track a satellite if I only knew how to do it.

DH went out 10 minutes later and was, apparently, left to cope on his own.

This happens quite often..

AIBU to feel offended

....whether it is needed or not. Very little politeness and manners around today. It didn't matter that you were perfectly capable. A smile and a 'thank you' on off on your way. Can't see why you should consider it patronising - strange wotld we live in!!

Barleyfields

Did they know that?

Why should they assume I couldn't?

Allira Wed 26-Feb-25 17:02:54

Goodness, what a lot of name calling on here, attacks on an inoffensive poster who just commented on the difference in attitude of the workmen towards men and women drivers.

So much for Women's Lib and equality!

You seem determined to be affronted by chivalry kitty. Do you complain about every man who shows you consideration, opens a door for you, offers you a seat or do you consider they assume you can’t open a door or stand rather than sit?

SingingRabbits Wed 26-Feb-25 17:50:05

Indigo8 You’re just projecting your own pride and arrogance onto them. Wait until one day you suffer from a mobility problem. It’s a humbling experience, believe you me!

I can think of worse things to be offended about!

I'm more interested in the fact that she seems to be reversing out into the road. I always try to avoid it.

Maybe because you’re not very good at it?

Barleyfields Wed 26-Feb-25 21:55:39

Far safer to reverse into your drive and leave in forward gear. Nothing to do with being good at reversing out. The roads are full of idiots speeding.

kittylester Wed 26-Feb-25 22:13:22

To be fair, I think I know how to manage getting in and out of my drive.

I go forwards into our drive and reverse out, DH does the opposite.
If anyone is speeding when I reverse out they'd end up their own a**e 😂

Maybe, because you presumably asked them what they were doing ( before getting in your car), they thought you were nervous about passing them?

SueinEspana Thu 27-Feb-25 07:42:22

I know how you feel Kittylester. During a visit to Costa last week, DH was securing our seats whilst I got our coffee (2 cups on a tray) The young barrista then asked if I would like help carrying the drinks to our table!! I am fit, slim, and dress trendily, however, I do have silver hair......does this make me doddery???

I am glad there are still men willing to help women.

When we read of all the bad ways some men behave towards women, reading of the opposite is heart warming.

Menopauselbitch Thu 27-Feb-25 09:23:16

It’s called good old fashioned curtesy and I miss it. Women being treated equal I find backfires on us. Moaning about respect is quite funny.

Menopauselbitch Thu 27-Feb-25 09:25:02

Are you not used to manners? I work in the service industry and my staff are trained ( indoctrinated 🙄) by me to be polite and helpful especially to women. It’s just a lovely old fashioned thing.

pascal30 Thu 27-Feb-25 09:32:20

old fashioned courtesy to an older woman should be cherished in my opinion.. I often find it with my delivery men from the big supermarkets now..

pably15 Thu 27-Feb-25 09:35:55

not so long ago, as I was trying to get past a row of stationary buses, a young man took my arm and led me safely past them,I thanked him and thought was a gentleman he was

Allira Thu 27-Feb-25 10:23:29

Actually, you can end up having some lovely chats with nice young men if they offer to help you or you ask for help.
You can find out their life history in about five minutes flat, they often like chatting to doddery old ladies like me 😀
Perhaps we're no threat.

Grateful springs to mind for me .
