I've had 4 in the past week! M&S, Santander, Specsavers and British Gas.
They are just a box-ticking exercise for the companies, showing that they are consulting their customers, without actually getting any real opinions or having to do anything about it!
The one from M&S said "Based on your visit today, how likely would you be to recommend us to a friend?" On a scale of 1-10 I chose 6. Follow-up question - why did you choose this score? "Well, it's bloody Marks and Spencer's isn't it? I only popped in for an Eccles Cake!" Who goes around recommending M&S to friends? "Oh, there's this great little store you may not of heard of on the High Street!"
Of course I usually ignore them, but sometimes, as was the case with Santander, I did actually have a suggestion. Of course the question was phrased in such a way that I couldn't give it.
Rant over, I feel better for that!
