Moaning about the lack of British Food when abroad

I didn't think such people existed anymore, when I read about it seemed like such a throwback. AIBU to wonder why anyone would go abroad, as a British woman did recently to Corfu and then complain about "the foreign food" and a lack of British food, her holiday being somewhat spoilt by distinct lack of chips and bacon shock eaten frequently seriously bad for the health anyway. It reminds me of going abroad in the '70s when some weirdos slightly strange hotel guests would bring their own cornflakes and tea bags shock

Just wondering what such a minority of people, certainly these days, expect from their foreign holiday.

How bizarre. British food isn’t exactly known for being the ‘best’ even these days. I notice on the list of life expectancy Britain is certainly a fair way down, below other European countries. Food ?

Smileless2012 Thu 05-Jun-25 09:01:58

It is odd isn't it TerriBull. Trying different food when abroad is one of the things we look forward too.

RosieandherMaw Thu 05-Jun-25 09:03:15

In the same way these pesky foreigners don’t speak proper English!

Septimia Thu 05-Jun-25 09:06:38

I gather there was a wide enough choice of food on the buffet for her to find something she liked, even if it wasn't her normal diet. But what did she expect? She wasn't in the UK, after all.

I rather suspect that she was after some sort of compensation...

NotSpaghetti Thu 05-Jun-25 09:11:36

TerriBull I generally travel with tea...

She should have gone to a part of Spain that has English cafes and Irish Bars!

We too love immersing ourselves in the culture when abroad, and the food is one of the best parts!

Sparklefizz Thu 05-Jun-25 09:14:50

It's not just the British. I was in Iceland on holiday years ago and the hotel provided the most fantastic buffet breakfast with a huge choice - but some very loud Americans complained every morning that there were no "hash brownies", whatever they are.

Silly woman! I have been to Greece, including Corfu several times their food is lovely. Why do you want bacon and chips when abroad? Immerse yourself in the culture and speak to the natives and have a lovely different time . Not much imagination and yes I bet she thought complaining would get her compensation. Hope her insurance company tell her where to go!

Absolutely laughable, and actually embarrassing.

Mt61 Thu 05-Jun-25 09:27:14

Why not just go on holiday to Blackpool if they want fry-ups & fish & chips 🙄

TerriBull Thu 05-Jun-25 09:31:52

I think it is unusual these days, the majority who travel want to embrace the culture of the country where they are staying, I mean why go abroad if you don't want to? nothing remarkable about British food, in fact I believe the Greek diet is deemed one of the healthiest. I do think there are those who just like complaining for the sake of it.

I remember quite a few years ago when my husband was checking out a golf course in Spain he'd heard about, although he was warned by a golfing mate, "I'm not sure you'd like it there" sited in a very British enclave. Whilst visiting we went into a cafe adjacent to the golf course, hoping maybe to try some tapas, sadly very absent, the menu offering such fare as, fish and chips, gammon, pineapple and chips, and chips and chips and more chips. We knew it was time to beat a hasty retreat when an announcement emanating from the wide screen tv in the bar area alerted to its regulars the 2.30 race from Walthamstow shock

We like to try the local dishes when we’re abroad. There’s always something to try, though octopus (not squid) was a step too far.
Maybe she should have gone to Portugal.
Down the road from our hôtel was a restaurant offering Full English Breakfast.
It was always very busy.

woodenspoon Thu 05-Jun-25 09:42:30

I laughed when I read it. What a silly woman. Greek food is lovely. All those salads, feta cheese, moussaka etc. Why wouldn’t you like it? Best to stay at home in future and eat chips.

Georgesgran Thu 05-Jun-25 09:45:18

Very embarrassing as she’s sort of ‘from my neck of the woods!’ What with her and the pair of dim girls from Gogglebox……

We went to Southern Tenerife some years back and reala didn't like it. the Spanish restaurant at our complex had closed, as no-one was eating there! It was all English food and beers, kareoke till late at night and the lambada around the pool. Luckily it was a timeshare exchange, so we called the company and requested a change. We travelled to the North of the Island, it was just bliss. Great Spanish food, Spaish clients and from all over Europe and beyond- and we had a fabulous time. We always return to the West of North of the Island nowadays, but much prefer Sicily.

Where did people find this 'non-story?' Obviously some media person who thought it would be of interest to people?

Who really cares what this woman thinks?

For years Brits have gone abroad expecting to have their fry up fast food and the market has served it to them.

They are not interested in the culture of other countries- they just want home with sunshine...

ViceVersa Thu 05-Jun-25 10:14:30

This is why we never do all-inclusive. We prefer to hunt out the little restaurants where the locals eat, where you usually find the best food - and best value too. Why bother even going abroad if all you want is what you can get at home?

She gave a "sad face" interview to the Daily Mail

I guess some people - and it’s not only British tourists however much we like to denigrate our own - just want a reasonably priced relaxing week or two in the sun as a break from their day to day, and many resorts do actively cater for that sort of holiday. It wouldn’t be for us but doesn’t affect our lives at all, so live and let live is my take on it.

I always put some teabags in my case, so judge away. smile We’ve been to many parts of the world where tea’s not readily available and too much coffee gives me a headache.

Allira Thu 05-Jun-25 11:10:51

The Australians used to laugh because we took teabags and Marmite with us. However, better teabags and Marmite are both available there now.

There's a daft advert on TV about some man crying because his suitcase full of tins of baked beans got lost en route.
I'd have been embarrassed to be in that advert but I suppose he just smiled and took the money.

When I read this I thought how absolutely daft. One of the joys of holidays is trying different food.
I must however admit to always taking a few teabags with me wherever I go. grin

I am afraid all she has done is show herself up as foolish and ignorant.

Had she never travelled abroad before?

It's a typical click-bait article from the Mail, that's all.

More clicks equal possible more advertising revenue.

There was a similar article some time ago now where a woman complained on her foreign holiday (I forget the destination) that everyone was speaking a foreign language... if it was even true.
