Beds in the study?

My 3rd bedroom is small and has always been used as a study/computer room. When my grandsons 9 and 10 come twice a year they sleep on blow up beds. This had never been a problem but now my other son says the boys are too big for this and he is going to help me get a pull out bed or sofa bed.
I feel this will spoil my room but perhaps I should give in and let him go ahead. What would you do?

Let him pay for the sofa bed as they can be expensive. Futons are also good.
We turned our study/ office back into a lovely bedroom as my husband is retired now, never used much afterwards.

Even if they can struggle on with blow up beds for another year or 2, they could be 6foot+ soon!

Does anyone have experience of the mattress toppers that they say could go straight onto the floor? And be folded away after

I have an IKEA day bed for the grandchildren. It's usually in single bed/sofa mode when I use the room for yoga practice, but pulls out to a big double when needed.

I have one like that. Useful.

Plus two sets of bunk beds.

This was us as well but we wanted to see our GS and for him to want to come to us so nice new memory foam divan bed it was and not much space for the desk etc. Neither of us are working so its a small sacrifice.

I don't use the computer as it is so slow but I can't access stuff stored on it like photos. The table takes up a lot of room so it could go. The parents seem in favour of getting beds so I think I will have to agree and get stuff moved around.

I was going to ask if you work from home.

We have a downstairs study that used to be DM's bedroom and I sometimes wonder where all the stuff has come from that fills it now! It's quite ridiculous.

Could you download the photos on to a memory stick? Get them to help you!

I’ve a single bed with trundle for DGS1, but for some reason I can’t get him out of the toddler bed and into another room. He’s 7, far too big for it, but says it’s comfy.
As long as he’s happy.

I ve slept on a blow up bed as an adult more than once I don’t believe there’s any age thing to it and it’s only twice a year

Nanato3 Thu 03-Jul-25 17:10:32

If your grandson's aren't complaining and you like your room as it is I would stay the same for now .

FTGD Thu 03-Jul-25 18:56:07

Look at fishing beds I'm 6ft 17 stone and I find them comfy. They can be used as sun loungers too

NotSpaghetti Thu 03-Jul-25 19:03:10

Why can't they sleep on inflatable mattresses?
They presumably aren't living with you over the whole of the summer?

I would not want something as big as a sofa bed thrust on me!

I'd just say no I'm afraid.

winterwhite Thu 03-Jul-25 21:38:49

Surely depends how long they stay for. I wouldn’t give up my study. At 10 and 12 blow up beds should be fine for a few days.

Say thanks but no thanks.

Absolutely.

NotSpaghetti Fri 04-Jul-25 07:44:46

They are 9 and 10.
Not 90 and 100!

9 and 10 year olds are happy anywhere when on holiday it seems to me!

I’ve got a futon in my study but I do find that it isn’t the easiest thing to set up in a restricted space and the ‘mattress’ is not very comfortable. I do put a mattress topper on but then that has to be stored somewhere.
Can you store a couple of mattresses under your bed and the one in the 2nd bedroom?

Caleo Fri 04-Jul-25 08:36:20

Maybe use third bedroom for nothing but a double bed for guests . A six feet by eight foot room could hold a double bed. Then use the second bedroom for computer work / spare room with two single beds for the grandsons. It may even be possible to use a curtain to draw across the two single beds in the computer room. There are single beds with truckle beds stored under .

What is the son doing thinking he can dictate to his mother like this? The children visit twice a year, so he expects her to be inconvenienced for the whole year just to pander to his children.

Stand up to him and just say 'no'. Or is he used to running roughshod over you?

posset Fri 04-Jul-25 09:35:29

I've used blow up beds for occasional visits from grandchildren over the years and never had a complaint. They are now aged between 6 up to 20 and all happy to sleep on them. I've also slept on them on occasion, perfectly well.
I always think that kids that go camping, say, with Scouts or Cubs, are given the tools to deal with minor inconveniences!

kircubbin2000 Fri 04-Jul-25 12:29:30

I'm thinking perhaps a fold up or fishing bed. It could be stored in the garage.

kircubbin2000 Fri 04-Jul-25 12:31:56

At most 6 nights a year as they go to another relative for a couple of nights too. Also on the blow up beds.Mmm.

Astitchintime Fri 04-Jul-25 12:42:39

So, this other son is going to help get a pull out bed or sofa…….does that mean he’s going to pay towards it? Why does he think that blowup mattresses aren’t suitable for children?

Do ensure that you can actually get this sofa bed up the stairs before buying anything……..I was assured by a sales person that the one we chose would manoeuvre round a 90 deg turn on our narrow landing………No, it wouldn’t! And it didn’t come apart either to take it up in pieces.

I settled for an Ikea one in the end……….its been used twice in 12 years.

Cossy Fri 04-Jul-25 12:46:49

I’ve slept on one of those rising air beds, they are really comfy!

If it was twice a week I’d understand, but don’t have a sofa bed if you don’t want one, get two of these riser beds!

They arent his children.I shall discuss it with their parents and let them decide. The kids haven't complained.

Azalea99 Fri 04-Jul-25 14:35:07

What about folding beds? Some have wheels so could be moved around easily & if dimensions permit you could use your existing blowup beds as extra mattresses. It might help to change the table for a folding one, perhaps like a garden table, so that way you still have the use of your 3rd bedroom as a study.

DeeAitch56 Fri 04-Jul-25 14:45:19

I’d go bunk beds or a day bed with a trundle bed underneath or a Murphy bed that converts from a wall based fitted desk/shelving unit to a double or single bed For the parents and put two singles in the 2nd bedroom for the grandchildren
