Daytime incinerating

Someone who lives close to us regularly has a day time bonfire which means due to respiratory issues we are unable to have our windows open or peg out washing as it comes in stinking of smoke. We don’t burn our rubbish but I would never light a fire until after 7pm to show consideration to my neighbourhood. There are no UK laws against lighting fires during the day so it’s a case of put up and shut up but honestly is it so difficult to think about others before oneself? AIBU or have the rights over responsibility brigade won the day! This is probably the straw that broke the camel’s back but as a person who tries hard to live in harmony with my community I find the antics of some folk quite frustrating!

Unlike us! We bought an incinerator about six months ago, (tin dustbin thing) and have never used it. It always seems too wet, too windy, too nice a day to spoil for neighbours, a weekend, a bank holiday, too early, too late etc. etc. We will find the right moment soon, I am sure!

Check with your local authority.
Some London Boroughs have banned fires.

If it is regular it can constitute a "nuisance"
How regular is the burning? And is it dry garden waste or noxious fumes?
I think this is key.

My son had this issue, he spoke to the people who hadn’t realised how far the smoke drifted, the people now notify neighbours in advance and lessened the frequency.
Have you spoken to them HowNow?

HNBC, it is very inconsiderate of people doing that, another instance of only thinking of themselves, my young neighbour quite often burns rubbish outside, but it's at night, and he always asks if it's ok, if we have washing out and lets us know to close the windows, doesn't take much to be considerent,,

Maybe it depends where you live - there seems to be plenty of people who have garden bonfires around here.

Lots of bonfires where I live too . We sometimes have a bonfire but do it late at night , but never if it’s a lovely evening.

Unfortunately Jaxjacky we can’t quite fathom who or where they are. We can’t see any smoke rising from a particular spot but the smell is so strong. Going to the council with no evidence would probably mean that they can’t help. We live on a housing estate which is a bit of a warren. I know in the scheme of things it’s a first world issue. On a brighter note we did get our washing out today assuming that the neighbour had burnt everything yesterday 😊

there may not be actual laws but then there are local byelaws
- check with your council

I find it odd in the days of alleged care for the environment that people still have bonfires - especially when fires can break out in these days without rain

Take this up with your local council but perhaps speak to the neighbours as a first resort……they might not realise what a nuisance they’re causing. No point falling out with people but we all need to be able to open windows and doors without choking on smoke.

There are no laws against burning waste in gardens but it is illegal if it causes a persistent nuisance to neighbours. So if you try speaking to them first and if there is no joy, then you have recourse to taking it further. I would assume you would need records of how frequently and the times that they light the fires. I would definitely try speaking to them first though as they may just be unaware that they are causing a problem.

I can’t imagine what people find to burn. We use a compost bin for garden waste, recycle most things and a trip to the rubbish tip now and again for anything else.

Sarahr Wed 20-Aug-25 20:37:18

Have you tried asking them to wait until the evening? We had a persistent bonfire maker in the village. After having to bring my washing in shortly after hanging it out I had a word. Just explained that people hang out their washing during the day and would they mind having their bonfire in the evening. Problem sorted

Welshy Wed 20-Aug-25 20:45:41

I will probably get shouted at BUT it's just as bad with those wood burners. I used to live next door to a couple that had one and I could still smell it with all my windows closed. Awful smell, I don't know what they used on it!

NotSpaghetti Wed 20-Aug-25 21:24:41

I hate the smell of meat cooking on barbecues.
That is a truly horrible smell in my opinion.
I'd rather have a bonfire any day...
(Obviously not one with "junk" and old plastics on it!)
grin

But I do see how regular bonfires are annoying - as a neighbour has had three already this week.

Welshy Wed 20-Aug-25 21:38:17

I agree very annoying. I had to rewash a line full of washing because of an inconsiderate neighbour burning rubbish a while ago! I was not happy!!!

Yes, do keep records. Regular burning is a nuisance and they can be stopped by environmental health in your local council, but you have to find them and complain ore than once

NotSpaghetti Wed 20-Aug-25 22:09:37

I don't think the OP can track down where it's coming from though FranP, unfortunately.

Which makes me wonder - could it be several different people with the same idea?

Sueinkent Wed 20-Aug-25 22:22:51

Seems to me they should not be doing it.

My neighbour has lots of bonfires, not sure exactly what he burns but smells dreadful and huge black clouds of smoke drift in my direction. Even with doors and windows shut the smell pervades the house.

MaggsMcG Fri 22-Aug-25 13:17:27

Check your local by-laws sometimes local authorities have rules or even recommendations around day time bonfires.
