AIBU Peculiar poses on fashion websites

Is it just me or has anybody else noticed mainstream clothes websites showing models in contorted poses?

It is getting nigh on impossible to see what clothes look like when the model is lying on the floor, has both arms on the air, slouching in a chair, holding a bag in front of them, balancing on one leg on a chair, etc.

I want to see boring things like how a shirt hangs, what the length of a dress looks like in real life, or if the sleeves are likely to be too long or short, but it's getting increasingly tricky.

Sometimes it looks like the photographer has forgotten that people want to see the clothes, not dramatic poses!

Totally agree. I buy a lot of my clothes online from Roman Originals now as they show the model in different poses eg sitting, standing and a back view. Even sometimes with the modek walking so you can see clearly how the dress will hang. The delivery is free and only £3 to send them back. If you enlarge the screen you can see the finer details. I do wish they would say how tall the model is as there is nothing more disappointing than falling in love with say a dress which is just above or below the knee of a model and finding it is a midi or longer and Im just above average height.
So many of the shops have great clothes but the more average sizes never seem to be in stock. I know you can sometimes order them but when your health is poor you don't want to have to go back to collect and then find they don't fit after all.

Is the same with M&S online, young women crouching or slumping against a wall etc., I just want to see the clothes on a model standing upright. And the models are so young and thin, what looks good on them may not look good on an older fuller figure woman. Surely there are older fuller figure women who can show what a top looks like on a size 14/16 etc., rather than a size 8.

I find the models in Chat magazine to be brilliant.

There's a decent selection of models of all shapes and sizes, some quite slim and slinky, others more curvy, younger and older, and they all look glorious!

I agree. It seems as though the models are more important than the clothes....and why do they look so miserable?

Granmarderby10 Thu 04-Sept-25 11:14:12

Yep. In a nutshell: while ever “we” none model figures (that’s surely the majority) keep on buying or …just looking at the websites even and not complaining to them, they will keep on keeping on.
Sorry M&S with your infeasibly l-ooooo-ng trousers classed as standard….. and dearth of short -fit in your stores.

M & S are awful. I was looking at tops but the models were hugging their knees so it was hard to see the top. Dresses with the model sitting just seems silly to me.

Granmarderby10 Thu 04-Sept-25 11:16:08

Oh yes mum2three that must be a prerequisite for all modelling. Never EVER smile or look remotely happy.

I used to buy a lot from M&S but tend to buy from LandsEnd now and CottonTraders.

I immediately thought of M&S when I saw this thread. Their photos are terrible.

I think this has always been a problem. i can remember making the same kind of complaints back in the 1960-1970s

teabagwoman Thu 04-Sept-25 13:41:11

Its definitely got worse, puts me off buying anything. It would also be helpful if retailers stopped giving colours fanciful names. They know that colours don’t come up true on screen so why don’t they give us better descriptions. It would probably reduce the number of returns that they complain about.

Alison333 Thu 04-Sept-25 15:21:39

It was actually the M & S website that tipped me over the edge. Bonkers poses make it impossible to actually see the clothes properly!

harrigran Sat 06-Sept-25 08:53:18

I do think M&S have lost the plot regarding the modelling of clothes.
I do not find the website attractive and no longer purchase from them.

Witzend Sat 06-Sept-25 09:55:36

Yes, M&S is at it - you can’t get a proper idea of the clothes. I especially dislike tucked-in tops, so you can’t see how long they are. As for the sulky or grumpy looking models…🤨

M&S are the worst for weird posing of models. The models themselves are now so painfully thin and flat chested that the clothes themselves look unattractive. They did use size 12 models for a while once upon a time but then went back to a size 6 or 8.I mean, just why? Their target market is 40+🤷🏼‍♀️

It's not just the photos that are hopeless- I find most of the clothes are too. I'm fed up of walking round one of their biggest stores outside London and feeling like I've wandered into a jumble sale. The current seasonal colours are dull and gloomy too. I haven't worn anything from M&S except underwear and jeans for years. Per Una used to offer the occasional nice style but there are fewer and fewer clothes in their range now. I fear that label may be about to disappear.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 07-Sept-25 14:03:53

I a, obviously out of step with most in this thread regarding M & S clothes.

I have purchased lots from the last couple of weeks, cannot fault their jeans, good choice of lengths and styles, good selection of in between season lightweight sweaters, some short sleeved.

grannygran Sun 07-Sept-25 14:08:37

That's exactly my thoughts, M&S being the worst culprits. I have to order on line and those type of adds get bypassed without a second glance. They sure don't do themselves any favours.

I also immediately thought of M&S! 😂 The way the models pose is ridiculous at times as you can’t see the garment properly. I was looking for trousers on their website and came across a model leaning back on a chair with her legs wide open. Looked awful and degrading. I do think M&S quality has gone down whilst their prices have gone up. I particularly noticed it when I bought a 3 pack set of full briefs in cotton. The cotton material was very thin and for the first time in many, many years, the briefs crept up!! On a positive note about M&S - they do show the model’s height and the size of the clothes she’s wearing on their website.

.

Roman Originals are very good.
Check the 'Sales' pages on their website, too.

Last time I went in M&S I had to self checkout my clothes purchases as there were no manned checkouts while the only assistant watched someone pick up some clothes and walk out of the shop. As she said, what could she do? I haven’t been back since. Shops should invest in staff and security to improve customer service.

justwokeup Sun 07-Sept-25 14:27:41

And yes, my pet moan is about models tucking in jumpers. How can you see how long they are in relation to an actual person? Don’t get me started about bending in one direction or the other, pulling the sleeves etc to make the clothes look longer/shorter/more shapely. How about treating customers properly?

woodenspoon Sun 07-Sept-25 14:32:33

I like the clothing in M&S but the unattractive unsmiling models they choose could easily put you off. Seasalt are going the same way. Ugly models, no smiles, unappealing. Who do they think they ARE appealing to I wonder?

woodenspoon Sun 07-Sept-25 14:33:50

Hotter are ok as is Woolovers and Cotswold Collection. Friendly smiling models.
