AIBU
DH and I have different tastes in decor. He likes more sparse(think Norwegian,Icelandic etc) I like more traditional .
I thought we had come to an agreement ie meet each other halfway 9n this.
However he has started decorating hall, stairs and landing.
We have come to agreement over wallpaper, but now he has bought a put up a hand rail that I can only say looks like a black drain pipe.Just a black metal.
He knows I absolutely hate this type of thing.I did say when he asked.
I just can't stand it ,it looks so cheap and nasty.I will try to post a photo.Wallpaper not started yet.
AIBU to ask him to change it

No you not BU - he is

When I had to gave an extra handrail put up to help me use the stairs safely, I chose a ‘pigs ear’ handrail and got a local carpenter to fit it. It was then painted the same colour as the wall and looks great

Oh God. Some men and decor. Most of them haven't a clue. They find decorative cushions bewildering for a start.

I think people sometimes do these things deliberately because they know it will spark a reaction. Surely, it’s best to strike a compromise with decor, furnishings etc. when individuals tastes conflict.

When I needed an extra handrail fitted up the stairs my husband asked if I was bothered about the colour . I said no he spoke to the people who powder coated the handrails they had a piece long enough it was brown and gave it my husband for free. Same with the handrails in the garden they where bright blue . I go for useful not pretty.

Like my ramp the council supplied. I call it industrial chic as it made from scaffold poles, metal plates and metal open grid flooring . It didn't cost me anything . But has helped me .

Not just men- I can't abide decorative cushions, or any cushions for that matter.

What do you rest your weary head upon kq?

I was thinking of getting a handrail but I'm sure DH will say it's a good idea, he'll contact someone who will come and put in some grey metal thing like scaffolding,

I want a wooden one that looks good as well as being functional.

My dh put up a hand rail in my mums hallway . He just bought some wooden ones and painted them white , which my mum wanted

Ooh that looks lovely , clean looking .

Beebaaboo .
Tell him that is wrong. If he likes Scandi stuff, a black metal handrail is just wrong. We live in a Scandi Hus….everything is wood.

I love that. I hate my handrail so will look into replacing it with that one.

pably15 Mon 09-Feb-26 17:56:16

I like it too,it looks good

Aveline Mon 09-Feb-26 17:58:59

I like the 'pigs ear' one too. Plain but nice enough to fit with any decor. A black tube would look awful.

How about a rope? one of those red/crimson plaited ropes
used in cinemas and outside clubs, through brass rings top middle bottom.
I can’t send a picture as it is in my colleague’s cottage, old oak beams, oak stairscase, bright white walls and a scarlet rope, looks dramatic, unexpected, stylish, practical.
She said her hand slipped on a wooden rail but a rope steadies her ascent and descent.

That looks really clean and fresh, I like how the handrail, stairs, picture frames and front door are all the same colour. Is that your actual home? I wonder because you said you had the handrail painted to match the walls. Maybe it was before it was painted. Looks lovely anyway.

It's a B&Q advert for a pine handrail.

Other handrails available!

Your stairs look great Tuliptree.

It was usually the cost that decided us. I would want a beautiful handmade piece of furniture but knew we couldn't afford it so thankfully IKEA was the compromise or the auction house, or Freecycle.

I vaguely wonder what I'll do if and when I downsize and have to start designing rooms on my own.

I do think your DH is BU. You should ask him to take it away and choose one together that you both like.

Is it really Allira It fooled me. 😟

Allira Mon 09-Feb-26 23:10:33

😁
Tuliptree's stairs could look exactly the same, though!

Looking at that one, I need a new carpet. Or house.

TheSunRisesInTheEast Mon 09-Feb-26 23:25:00

Lol!! Silly me. I'm sure Tuliptree's looks just as good 👍
