Stair Handrail.I hate it!

I have just replaced my old hand rail, it was painted white, but constantly needed wiping. I decided to research them, and I realised I will probably only buy this once. So I paid a bit extra and had a solid oak, with natural curves to it, with black brackets. It is so lovely and different, always admired. Got it online from a company called Pipe Dream Furniture(other places to purchase are available) It is much admired, cost me about £50 over the original I was going to have,

After I slipped on the stairs carrying washing I'm really glad we have a hand rail now. I ended up with a badly sprained ankle and throw all laundry down the stairs since that day.

I love that. I hate my handrail so will look into replacing it with that one.

I came home one day and DH had hauled two large, old speakers out of storage and installed them in our sitting room. I was not at all happy, but I didn’t say anything. The next time he was out of the house, I unscrewed the wires them and put them away again. It wasn’t easy, they were very heavy. They were not mentioned again…..it’s not the first time I have removed or changed something that’s been done without any consultation.

I don’t think this should have been put up without checking with you. I think you have every right to raise it. But I find that I do better if I’ve done some research and I have some options to present rather than just saying that I don’t like something.

I also sometimes think that I dislike new things to begin with, but get used to them after a few weeks and decide I can live with them. Perhaps as part of your negotiation you can tell him that you’re unhappy that he chose this without consulting you, that you don’t think you like it but you will try to live with it for awhile, but that if you still don’t like it in six weeks time you would like it to be changed? (And if that doesn’t work, wait until he is out and take it off the wall yourself. Get a friend around to help because it might be heavy!)

My pet hate is stupid cushions on the bed !!! you have to throw them on the floor to use the bed ...

The stairs are very steep and narrow...
I think it's ridiculous but she says it gives her "more room" without them.
She didn't take them off. She has a tall narrow 3 storey terraced house - so two sets of stairs.

Just get wooden normal handrails. Then you either stain and varnish them with a matt coating or paint them any colour you like.

That handrail looks lovely, but we have one like that along one staircase and just a warning. If you have mobility or balance problems then this does not provide very good support. You need a proper round shaped rail you can wrap your hand around. You cannot get a firm supportive grip on that shape. I am in that situation and much prefer a proper round handrail.

Chestnut - based on meeting my needs and experiences I don’t agree. As I mentioned, I need both rails and use them to sort of haul myself up. I have a good safe grip ( I also mentioned that my pigs ear is a deeper one so provides a good grip). The other point is that as my stairs have a dog leg and the wall also sort of curves out, I couldn’t use a simple straight handrail. So if anyone has a more complicated staircase, please don’t be put off using the right size of pigs ear. I completely agree that the narrower pigs ear rail is not safe for many people.

Similar to our handrail, quite easy to 'wrap' hand around. Oak Broomstick.

I would love to meet the one couple in the universe that actually have the same tastes in decor.
It's a bit depressing because our houses usually end up a hotch-potch with OH conceding some items and me others.
At the moment we have dark wood at one end of the room (OH) and light wood at the other (me).
I've managed to train him to do background magnolias/creams and linens for wall paints and wallpapers , to be fair.

We choose together. Neither of us have strong preferences, both may veto. Predominately hand-me-downs. We live in an old farm home, by definition - no style.

I wish my DH had an opinion on anything to do with the house, decoration, handrails, doors, floors, wall colours - anything at all! For him a house is just somewhere to keep dry and hopefully warm. His parents were just the same, didn't take any interest in their home apart from the essentials of clean and tidy.

The upside to this is that I can impose my own tastes and choices (within our finances) and he never complains, the downside is that I have to make every decision on my own!

Oh God. Some men and decor. Most of them haven't a clue. They find decorative cushions bewildering for a start.

Not just men- I can't abide decorative cushions, or any cushions for that matter.

I put mine away when we had a very chewful puppy, & they haven't come back 4 years later. I admire other peoples but can easily do without them myself.

No, you’re not being unreasonable asking to change it. You should both at least not mind it. I’ve concluded men and women hardly ever have the same opinions. My husband is currently drawing complicated drawings on the computer showing house changes we’re having done soon. It takes him hours but I never like any of his suggestions! I despair!

Cheapest compromise - paint it a colour that goes with the decor and YOUR tastes.

Cushions make chairs comfortable and cosy, especially with a blanket/throw in winter..
