AIBU to expect this forum to be for just women? At least that was my impression but after receiving a (unwelcome) private message from a man, I’m wondering if I’ve got this wrong? (And yes, I have blocked him).

Allira

I think David must be wielding his wooden spoon because he knows full well that Gransnetters, who are mainly women, discuss all kinds of subjects and he joins in the threads too. Perhaps he's not keen on women having opinions though.

Don't fall for it 😂

Women can have opinions but don't assume they are always right, only my wife is always right.

only my wife is always right

She must be Superwoman if she's more righter than wot you are 😂

(Yes, I know that is grammatically incorrect.)

Allira Sat 07-Mar-26 14:18:41

Terribull 😂

I wonder if "Mrs David49" is reading this thread!

Why do some women take their husband's name when they marry even today?

She could be a regular poster on here, for all we know.
[No, I am not Mrs David49].

I'm so glad I'm not alone in finding much of this unintentionally hilarious grin I think I can always rely on you Allira in that respect grin

Bring on the men I say! A huge void was left by Grandad whatever he called himself who once posted frequently GN, often admonishing many of the posters for their outright misandry and then throw in a veiled threat of "I've just shown your post to my colleagues" Allegedly worked night and day something to do with shipping, saving us all from the worst excesses of Brexit such as mass starvation, or so he told us, whilst simultaneously reading the riot act to many women on GN for dissing their men folk. He had real fire in his belly, made our very own Professor Higgins come across as a mild mannered pussycat.

TerriBull Sat 07-Mar-26 15:06:41

Not shipping, I think it was haulage, anyway suffice to say he was a self confessed super hero at the time. Making sure ample supplies of baked beans or whatever got through to all the far flung regions of the nation.

David49 Sat 07-Mar-26 15:08:00

Mrs D is very happy cheering Scotland on in the Rugby, not at all liberal, she probably voted Reform at the election, I didnt ask.
Confident and independant we are a very good match.

Galaxy Sat 07-Mar-26 15:11:42

Ah grandad. I once got deleted for calling him a misogynist ( he had been banned for about the third time by this point). Hated teachers, and working from home.

Yes he was a bit of a one off, very strident, but conversely entertaining.

Galaxy Sat 07-Mar-26 15:23:32

I had forgotten the 'shown your post to my colleagues" thing, that was very funny.

David49 Sat 07-Mar-26 15:31:47

"Why do some women take their husband's name when they marry even today?

For the same reasons that they marry, security and status, there are very few women who would refuse to be a wife if asked.

It's mostly professional women who use their maiden name

Yes the man was a legend in a weird sort of way.

Allegedly, Mrs Grandad, who didn't post strangely, but we came to know her vicariously, not only because she thought many comments on GN about their menfolk were appalling, but because she was the sort of woman who could be relied on to lend a hand with onerous household tasks, such as helping our hero clear his gutters. I don't think she was allowed up the actual ladder, she shuffled around at the bottom doing something or other, no doubt quite pivotal but not sure what exactly, anyway she was held up as a shinning example to the women on GN who didn't support their men folk sufficiently.

So there you are David, you've a long way to go before you achieve the heady status that man had on GN. He set a high bar, one you could only dream about, banned 3 times shock

With all respect David that may be your experience but it does not make it a universal fact.
2 of my D’s, happily married, have retained their maiden name.

Your comment about “professional” woman is both sexist and ageist.
(BTW do you know of any “amateur” women? )
Status?
Don’t make me laugh!
Security ?
A good education, training, qualifications, their own talent and ability count for far more.

I appreciate given the demographic of GN you may be of advanced years, but that does not necessarily excuse a 19 th century outlook.

That exactly my point they were asked and chose to get married for the extra security that gives then, as the vast majority would.

Come on RosiesMawAgain, David has made it clear that he knows best. Don’t be acting like a professional feminist with ideas above your station.
I have my father’s last name, mr I didn’t expect or want me to take his name when we married, I reciprocated. Our girls had both our names. One of them took her husband’s name on marriage, the other didn’t.

As for David’s entertaining views on professional women - I’m wondering which universe he lives in

Iam64 Sat 07-Mar-26 16:15:35

The way the law operates still discriminates against cohabiting women. Thst must change

Only in your mind , marriage is alive and well for women in the 21st century. It's men that are increasingly questioning the sacrifices marriages involve, most women are not stupid, gaining a share of a husbands wealth is always going to be a gain.

Iam64 Sat 07-Mar-26 16:17:51

‘Security ‘ hasn’t influenced any woman I know in choosing whether or not to marry
Legal security can be established with joint agreement if people prefer not to marry

Truly offensive as well you know

Who wants to be equal to men, why should we lower ourselves to their level!?

It's of no interest to me whether a maiden name is used, some do some don't, your daughters also valued the advantages of marriage, exactly as I first said most do just that.

It's not my opinion it's what most do, that is fact in the 21st century.

Im a centrist, my wife has more right wing opinions we don't discuss politics and I don't know which way she votes. The comments other men make indicate more to the right of my own opinion, some far right.
Even my grandsons have right wing opinions, granddaughters one quite liberal, other neutral.

How can you live with someone and never discuss politics?

Perhaps you assume your wife is only interested in talking about family matters.

I’m afraid you are digging yourself a hole.

Galaxy Sat 07-Mar-26 16:37:04

I dunno. I stopped talking to dh about politics during his brief dalliance with the lib dems grin

David49 Sat 07-Mar-26 16:39:54

Thats over 2 pages of feminism Im doing really well.

Women get married if they can because if they don't both have the freedom to walk away with just maintenance for children. In bereavement a partner can be left with nothing, thats really silly.

grumppa Sat 07-Mar-26 16:40:10

I think the last person I discussed boats with was round the world yachtswoman Tracy Edwards. So much for generalisations about the sexes.
