Thinking of selling due to heat

Now I know this might sound a tad dramatic but here in London high temps are becoming the norm over the past few years. We live in a house that would need a lot spending on it to install AC and we still wouldn’t be able to go out during the day due to the heat. I am a full time carer for my husband and am finding the continued extreme heat depressing and exhausting. Am therefore wondering if we should move back to North Lancashire where we are from originally and where temps have been much lower and bearable. The only difficulty is that we would not be near our daughters and with one DD having a health crisis right now it has been good to be nearby.
But can think of no easy solution to this. ATM we are sitting in a house where the curtains are closed all day and we can’t go out because temps are already over 30 degrees.

Moaning Minnie do you complain when it’s freezing cold in winter too

Yes! It's an excellent way to share tips, offer support and sometimes even have a laughgrin

I expect we all do, and what of it? This heat can be dangerous for older people just as severe cold can be.

Yes V3ra but there are many fakes on Amazon so I wouldn’t risk it.

Buy a couple of portable free standing air conditioners and a couple of fans fgs

Just looked at some sites today, Currys, John Lewis, Argos as interested in buying a mobile air con unit but they are all completely sold out, even the expensive ones.

Oreo there are several on Amazon.

How very useful.

Currently sweltering here in north Cambridgeshire. I do early morning cleaning when it's pleasant enough, I get home at 9am ish and it's already too hot to water the garden.
It never lasts very long really though...

Selling and buying a home will definitely get you hot under the collar!

Stay near your DDs and save yourself a heap of hassle and lots of money on estate agents and solicitors which could be spent on installing aircon.

I missed the boat this time around but will still buy one when it’s possible, Mum wants one too.

skye17 glad my post was of use. Know I go on a lot , but we dont need to reinvent the wheel and if any of us have good ideas that help gransnet is a great forum to go to.

Our mobile aircon was £170 and has made all the difference in the bedroom. Moving doesn't sound like a practical solution, there are ways round this :-)

Can you move coastal like Kent or somewhere with a good train route to your daughters too.
We are Suffolk coastal and temp today 23 plus lovely breeze . Bad train line though. But Kent has that 1 hr fast train.

Also when deciding on property get a north west facing garden .
My front is south east my back is north west. I have a parasol too . I’m disabled and heat sends me cuckoo but I’m lucky here I manage with just a fan . And big French doors. so I’m inside with fan but also breeze and shade .

Before you move, rather invest in an evaporative air cooler with freezer packs, most are under £100 from Amazon. Then, once things cool down a bit, you can just park it (or them) in a cupboard till next summer. Remember to close the windows in the room to keep the heat out.

we bought one of these about 4 weeks ago and have to admit it is better than a normal fan but not as impressive as I thought it would be, it is more refreshing to sit in front of but does not seem to cool the room very much.

I agree that moving costs will be more than changes to the house. I paid £6000 about five years ago to have north facing conservatory insulated under roof - transformed it completely. Very comfortable most of the summer. Also have bought Thermolux insulating blinds for my town house in London, not cheap but very helpful and nobody seems to know about them. As a cheap option I bought a Shark fan which I cant recommend enough. Next step a garden sail and they aren’t too much money. I find it depressing too but there are solutions

I really wanted to do a Les Dawson, talking about your "downstairs" smile

Air con units won’t be much good if we have electricity cuts.

I'd certainly look at making your whole downstairs as a cool little bolt hole before thinking of moving.

The downside, as you say, is not being able to go out and about, but then I'd imagine it's pretty unbearable everywhere in this extreme heat.

My garden temperature this morning was 44° C and I live in the north-west.

Geraldine, I’m north west, had my dogs in shaded woods by 8am, twenty mins sniffing and ambling and my lab was ready to come home. Midday I was driving , busy right turn into my driveway ve, woman walking a black lab and an older dog who was struggling. I “ looked “ but by the time I’d parked she’d gone. The pavements were hot to touch. Crazy

Mobile air cooler

Shel1951 Thu 09-Jul-26 18:04:59

I live in the s.w of Ireland and its 24 degrees, even though im 10 minutes from the sea, we have 2 air conditioning units upstairs that you fill the tanks with water and they keep the air cool and moist, they are Old still work, perhaps look into something like this for a couple of rooms?
I see its 34 in London totally unbearable,

Jess20 Thu 09-Jul-26 17:32:29

My son has a portable Aircon unit and it's pretty effective. However we're moving because our house is so cold in winter, which means it's not been too hot this summer either..
