Locked room for breakables when grandkids stay?

My son, his wife and kids (three year old and two babies) are coming to stay for a week or so while their house is being decorated. I'm looking forward to them staying but in one room I've got lots of breakable items that have great sentimental value. I want to put a temporary lock on the door to this room to stop the three year old going in. My husband is against this as he says he doesn't want the house to be like a prison. I'd obviously explain why I want to do this with my son and DIL first. But what have other grans done?

You just keep telling them no . Things are just that things . When you die no one will care if something had sentimental value. Things will just be sent to a charity shop or to the tip. I was ruthless when I moved house and got rid of a lot of things . Still do today if it serves no purpose it goes. Family and friends know what I like .

People are important things are not . Plus I don't want my daughter to have to deal with things when I die. I like my pare downed living no clutter. Less things for me to break or fall over. I fall enough as it is.

I’ve never put things away because of my children or grandchildren. Look , don’t touch.
I have a craft room and they love to be in there. They have a trolley that is for their craft materials. They know that if something isn’t in there they must ask if they may use it.

It’s strange to me how we put emotional value on inanimate objects. I guess it’s the memories attached to them. To protect objects from grandchildren by locking them up (not the children 😀) seems to be sending the wrong message.

Put precious items away safely and enjoy the children.

Well, she's 7 now and still like a toddler in that respect but one lives in hope.

M home office door is always shut as I couldn’t risk any damage to expensive equipment which is on loan from my employer. I also keep my photography kit in there too - again this and other stuff is kept in here for safety purposes. The doorhandle is beyond the reach of my 3 yo granddaughter. It may be worth considering fitting child safety locks on certain cupboards for your grandchildren’s safety as well as your own piece of mind. Wishing you a fun and enjoyable visit.
