Many thanks, Indinana for the link, will do one of the sideways-on edgings. The blanket might get finished at last!
Flutter and janerowena, my father used to love darning, and had a little loom for the purpose, I enjoyed using it as a child. I believe they are still available.
My Gd1 has asked me to crochet a blanket for her bed. I find granny squares can be tricky because the back of the work doesn't look as good as the front (it's probably me) so I've started crocheting six inch squares in mauve and light purple which are her favourite colours.
Thanks loopy. Although the yarn is fine, the needles used are big and it knits up quite quickly because the patterns are simple repeats and I don't have to keep referring back to the instructions! It's a bit like arran knitting - relatively simple steps constantly repeated. I really don't know how long they take as I often have 2 or 3 things on the go and work on the one that takes my fancy at the time!! I can also ignore the whole lot for a few weeks and then have a real knit-in.
Flutterby - I love my darning mushrooms, I too am a closet darning fiend. I inherited a whole tray of sock wools for darning from a great-aunt, much to DBH&Son's dismay.
However, last month DS was in distress because he had gone through the elbows of his very expensive Jack Wills maroon woollen hoodie. My mushroom and I saved the day, and I reinforced the darn with a patch made out of my old tights (but I didn't tell him that part).
shysalhave a look at this site. Lots of knitted edgings that you could make and sew onto your blanket. It looks fabulous, by the way, all those diagonals are really effective!
I am going to collect my darning mushroom from Waitrose tomorrow. Ordered on line from John Lewis and to be picked up from Waitrose - what will they think of next. Have been wanting one for ages. (Rubbing elbows on table to get something to darn.)
rose this one is in 3ply but there's a 2ply option. Currently knitting a circular 3ply in 'feather and fan' pattern. 41 years ago I did a 2ply shetland lace christening shawl for nephew - first baby in family and first shawl! Apart from that one 'heirloom' one I tend to tell mums just to use them as cosy blankets and gentle machine wash with other baby woollies but in a pillow case. Dgd 3 currently has hers tucked round a doll! One reason I enjoy these is because there's very little sewing up involved.
I know it will improve when I wash it and the stitches "settle" - it's a bit like alchemy isn't it, what happens when you carefully wash your work. I like that part.
Grannyknot, never be ashamed of your work. Your blanket looks lovely and soft and warm. I am envious, (don't tell my sister) , I cannot knit. I had to go to evening classes when I was in my 20's to learn to crochet. I had to have a craft of some sort, and sewing was not my thing, I failed dismally at school sewing lessons. I got really hooked on crochet, no pun intended .
I had a baby's first size cardigan I started when expecting DD (now 37), continued knitting for DS (35), Dnephew (33), his sister (29) and found it last year and finished it for church bazaar.
I have spent the afternoon stitching up a cardigan for DGD. Not finished, put on one side, I really dislike stitching up!! It's like washing up after a really nice meal.
That's lovely shysal I am still knitting squares, but I send them away for someone else to sew together.
mcem did you knit that shawl in 2 ply? I have a very old pattern similar to that but it is in 2 ply (even more impressed).
I have RSI but find I can knit if I use circular needles so the bulk of the knitting rests on my lap. Crocheting is a complete mystery to me, even my exceptionally patient best friend gave up on me (she's a crochet-er par excellence).
My stash of yarn is stealthily hidden around the house, heaven help me if DH ever susses me out!
What wonderful creations! My inferior offering is a cat blanket for Battersea, made from oddments of wool. It is very uneven and needs edging. I am another who hasn't mastered the art of crochet. Any suggestions on how I might could achieve a neat result?
I crocheted this one a few years ago. It does good service in the summer, when I need a little extra warmth at night. I am warmer than DH at night, (menopause). He has a single duvet if needed.
