Knitted nativity set - has anyone else made one?

Saw a pattern mentioned on mumsnet and thought I'd give it a go - it's a Jean Greehowe (IIRC). Apparently quite easy!
Was going to get a bought nativity for Gdcs but they're still rather little for anything breakable.
Now thinking of how to make a stable to put it all in - some of the empty shoeboxes stored in the garage - the ones dh has wanted to chuck a few times - might come in handy.

He was Casper Witzend. Happy knitting!

Oops,
Caspar!

I think you will enjoy knitting them Witzend, especially when it comes to knitting the beards!

Jalima1108 Thu 30-Aug-18 10:09:53

Dan, Ben and Joe for the shepherds?

(good Jewish names!)

Witzend Thu 30-Aug-18 12:23:21

Actually there are only 2 shepherds - I must have been mistaking Joseph for one of them (similarly drab clothing!) so Dan and Ben would be good, Jalima!
Yes, BB, I did beard A last night. I do enjoy knitting titchy little things - finished before you know what.

Was pleased last night to unearth a very old school geometry set, so I have the pair of compasses needed for drawing cardboard bases.

I crocheted a complete nativity set for my GC - it comes out every year and has pride of place, in spite of the fact that the camel tends to splay its legs and sink delicately to the ground!

GS loves "Baby Cheeses"!!!!!

Jalima1108 Thu 30-Aug-18 16:00:59

Embroidering Baby Cheeses's face was the worst part. It felt sacrilegious somehow.

I sometimes wonder if people in those times used their full names or diminutives - eg Joe, Pete, Matt, Beth, Andy, Jim etc.

I'm very impressed with the Jean Greenhowe pattern - the instructions are so meticulously detailed.
3 sheep, one wise man and one shepherd down - the rest will be on hold for a while since we're going on hols on Thursday morning, and I haven't even thought about packing.

Thanks for this thread Witzend, I've sent for the pattern book and look forward to knitting the nativity. You're getting on with it quite quickly. I have enjoyed everyone's posts and photos.

Witzend Wed 05-Sep-18 08:56:44

I hope you'll enjoy it, Nana3 - I certainly have so far.
Only reservation so far is that I'm beginning to wonder whether the whole set plus stable (once I've worked out how to make that) is going to be rather big for dd to find room for. I'm sure she'll say it's fine anyway but her house is not exactly huge - we shall see.

I make a gingerbread stable each year, then we sit down and the GC add in the figures as we tell the Christmas story. Its one of my favourite days of the season!
This year they will be old enough to help with making the stable, so results may be less ..... level grin

(a double rear wall means a night light can be added, so the star lights up)

What a lovely thread! Some of the descriptions have made me giggle over my morning cuppa. Gruesome hybrids and knock kneed donkeys! I crochet more than knit nowadays. but I did knit a Tiny Clanger last year for dgs. I’d love to have a go at this but, unfortunately. time isn’t on my side.

Katek Wed 05-Sep-18 11:08:32

Just read that again - I meant I’m really busy not that the Grim Reaper was hovering!

Jalima1108 Wed 05-Sep-18 14:15:37

Sometimes the sewing up of all these nice knitted animals and people takes longer than the knitting!

Jalima1108 Wed 05-Sep-18 14:16:52

That looks yummy Chaos

This year they will be old enough to help with making the stable, so results may be less
They could be less altogether - 'one for the stable, one in the mouth' grin

Nana3 Wed 05-Sep-18 23:01:33

I was thinking just that Jalima.

Thorntrees Thu 06-Sep-18 21:49:19

Having found the pattern I’ve made a start. Done Mary and Joseph so far,a bit fiddly as they are quite small but pleased with my efforts so far. Going to try a shepherd and a sheep next as I have some white fluffy wool If I manage the whole set I will have to learn how to put a picture on the forum, that might be trickier than doing the knitting.smile

Witzend Fri 21-Sep-18 14:59:47

How are you getting on, Thorntrees and Nana3? I've got stuck in again after hols, and have just finished Mary and Baby 'Cheeses' (I love that name!)
Here they are with the sheep I did first.
Still quite a lot to do!

Billybob4491 Fri 21-Sep-18 16:50:34

That looks great Witzend, well done, am currently knitting a witch for granddaughter for Halloween. I use Jean Greenhowe patterns all the time, find them very easy to use.

Jangran99 Fri 21-Sep-18 18:01:06

Panic! I got the set out to do some repairs (cat had a game last year!!) and the baby is missing 😭
I will have to try and replace him so thank you Witzend for the photo!

Witzend Fri 21-Sep-18 18:55:59

I bet Gdd would love a witch for Halloween, but alas we have a lot on in the next month and I doubt I'll have time. Plus I have also rashly promised to make some little things (very little) for Gdd's pre-school Christmas fair, just as well that's not until late November.

I sent the pic of Mary and Baby to my sister in the US, and she has said for the 2nd time that if I'm including a donkey, I must for the sake of authenticity in the stable, knit some donkey poo! Well, you never know - I'm sure Gdcs (2 and 3) would love it. Maybe I'll do some of Jean Greenhowe's little holly berries in brown...

Jalima1108 Fri 21-Sep-18 19:44:17

Thorntree and Witzend

I have made a start too - I sent for the pattern.
If I don't have much time, I will just try to make Mary and pretend that she is still pregnant, therefore nothing has happened and no-one else needs knitting.
smile

Witzend Fri 21-Sep-18 21:25:21

grin Jalima!

Witzend Wed 14-Nov-18 09:54:44

Gdd (3) loves 'Baby Cheeses' so much, I have made another, manger and all, as an extra little Christmas present. No. 2 is now sitting with all the rest on top of the piano while I try to make some sort of stable, so it looks as if Mary's got twins!
