What's your least favourite sewing task?

For me it's hemming, not by hand (I avoid that like the plague) but on the sewing machine. I love putting together a pattern and learning new techniques and skills. But at the end of all that work, hemming is so boring and I just want to get it over with and have the finished garment. What about you?

Definitely sewing up knitting also. I sometimes make blankets and now I crochet them in long lines to avoid any sewing. I don’t like sewing on buttons, either.

No, it wasn't Witzend ?

But I will, I will, I will!

Callistemon21

Sewing up knitting.

At least I completed a task last evening that I had delayed doing.

I take it that wasn’t the N-thing, Callistemon21!

Any sewing is an absolute aberration to me. However I've always enjoyed joining up the knitted pieces. I did them as each piece was completed which made the chore less onerous and it spurred me on to garment comp!etion.

I hate all the finishing off bits like the hemming. However, I have recently got into changing bought items into something I like better by redesigning them to suit and there isn't quite so much "finishing off."
I am very heartened by the many younger people who are really getting enthusiastic about making their own clothes. My daughter now makes most of her children's clothes including their underwear. She made me some undies for my Birthday and they were so comfortable.

In the past -I've loved designing , choosing fabric and cutting out then main stitching it together-but I hate stitching in gathers on the machine .
In fact, I avoided them if possible !
I used to put pleats in rather than gathers .

I love hand beading and embroidery and prefer to make my own designs .

I can knit a bit, but my mum was such a good fast knitter that it was always easier to get her to finish off anything I'd started! She was a court dressmaker before she had children, and I can still hear her in my head when I'm sewing saying "Don't bodge it!!!"

LadyGracie Sat 07-May-22 09:22:31

I don’t enjoy any type of sewing. I’m an avid knitter so when it comes to sewing up I do take my time and do it well, you can spoil a well knitted garment by poor sewing up.

CanadianGran

I agree with Callistemon21; sewing up knitting projects. I wish I could hand it over to someone else.

I'm not a sewer, I've just done mending. Getting through some heavy work jeans or jackets can be a pain (literally).

Do a bit of googling - there are actually people who offer this service (if you hate it so much you'd pay someone else)

Buttons usually!

GagaJo Sat 07-May-22 08:24:15

Anything on the machine. I don't actually mind doing it, but the fag of getting it out, set up, put away etc.

I love any hand sewing. Find it really therapeutic and calming.

Two of my GC are very slim so I have to sew elastic inside the waistband of school trousers etc. I have to pull the elastic taut as I stitch. It is painful on the fingers. I hate it!

Sewing up knitting definitely, I used to sew lots for me and the children, I made lots of curtains even did something hand smocking. Nowadays it’s hems and buttons. Shame is none of my family sew.

Turning the piece inside out

Hetty58 Fri 06-May-22 23:59:17

I hate joining knitting - I use the three needle bind off or kitchener stitch whenever I can.

grannyactivist Fri 06-May-22 23:34:04

I avoid sewing.
So how come I absolutely love watching the Sewing Bee? ?‍♀️

Grannmarie Fri 06-May-22 23:24:09

Sewing up knitting, definitely!
Even though I've watched YouTube tutorials on different techniques.

merlotgran Fri 06-May-22 23:21:46

Another one for sewing up knitting.

Cabbie21 Fri 06-May-22 23:12:26

Once upon a time I used to make my own clothes and I hated putting zips in. Nowadays my sewing is restricted to mending, hemming and sewing on buttons. I put off these jobs but once I get the sewing kit out, I don’t mind it.

Easy peasy I don’t sew
Used to love darning in the days when we darned

Grammaretto Fri 06-May-22 22:11:38

Nannarose grin
All of it really. I buy a pattern and material and all the gubbins. So far so good. Get it home and begin to lay it out, pin and and cut the cloth.
At present I am stumped by some wording on the pattern.

My DD never uses a pattern. She does it all by eye. I wish I could show you the sundresses she has made for her girls. Beautiful, simple and quick.
I should stick to things I can do,

Nannarose Fri 06-May-22 22:02:30

I'm afraid that my least favourite tasks all relate to fitting. The person I sew for bulges in all the wrong places, is fussy about details, and has a persistently strange idea that totally unsuitable things would look good on her (yes it's me!)

Grannynannywanny Fri 06-May-22 21:27:07

Wundaweb is my friend ?

ayse Fri 06-May-22 21:10:28

Taking up DH’s trousers as he has very short legs.
