I want to knit a blanket for a pregnant friend’s baby.. I made one in cream, lilac and green for her older child but would like to make a different coloured blanket for the baby. I don’t know what sex the baby is.

Any suggestions of neutral colours that would go well together? I will be using cream again for most of the blanket. Thanks for any help.

Creams, light greys and soft yellows.

Cream, with a fern green, rust and a darker brown. My friend’s daughter wanted her to crochet one in those woodland colours and it turned out really nice.

What are the mother's favourite colours?

Hithere Mon 07-Aug-23 19:49:41

And father's too

Apparently neutrals are the big thing So I’d go with GrannyGravy.

Cream and grey.

Norah

Cream and grey.

You need a pop of colour. Grey and cream are too alike.

Cream, beige, biscuit, oatmeal shades?

Can you ask the Mum-to-be what colours she likes?

I've seen a crocheted one which is cream, beige, a soft gold and two pinks but you could change the pink for whatever she might like.

Cream, pale mint or sage green or grey & white

I'd ask mum too

Lots of people don't assign genders to colours any more

is this to wrap the baby while carrying him her.
young babies are not meant to have any blankets or anything else in the cot with them.
they are meant to sleep in growbags with nothing else over them.

i know you all know this.
i am just thinking aloud.

Baby blankets are so useful to put over the very young baby when holding it to your shoulder soothing it off to sleep. Taking a newborn out in a pram would need some protection from the cold, wrestling them into an all in one snowsuit isn't that that easy in the first couple of weeks. And when older then can actually be used as a blanket. I have a granddaughter that still has hers on her bed at 14!

The baby itself would prefer a dark colour (or black) with cream - in stripes or geometric patterns. We used to put something in print on the pram - just for baby to look at - they were fascinated. Older babies love bright primary colours!

Perhaps ask the mum, though. A recent gift just had to be in blue and/or beige - as the mum had decided they were the only acceptable colours - what complete balderdash!

Black is difficult to knit with - hard on the eyes!

I've crocheted many baby blankets and buggy covers, but the one I made for my granddaughter's buggy got the most compliments and questions about where my daughter bought it.
It was a lovely shade of dark purple with an orange border!

My Nanna crocheted me a poncho in purple & Orange back in the 70’s MiniMoon. I loved it and that was also much admired.

Thanks for all the suggestions - I will have to go to our local wool shop and try putting some of these combinations together.

I made one for the first Gdc - they had chosen not to know the sex in advance. It was made of joined squares in some sort of moss stitch, plus an edging, I used a soft green, a soft blue, yellow and cream. It has been used for all 3 Gdcs - girl, boy, girl. (And later, the cats!)

I have come back to update on the baby blanket that I have made - it was for my second grandchild - and my dd requested that it should be a rainbow blanket and to say that it is bright is an understatement.

Dd has found out today that she is having a little girl and as she has always hated pink clothes this will be ideal for her little girl. Dd has now requested that I knit a blanket for her best friends baby who is due in December and as I have a lot of wool leftover I will be starting on that when I have finished the one for my dgd. Thankfully it is nearly finished.

These are two baby blankets I have knitted recently. They are going on a charity stall tomorrow. If they sell I shall knit more as it is very relaxing.

I have made lots of crochet blankets. I made one for a new baby boy in grey lemon and white. I have started doing multi colours of pale colours. And once I know the baby,s sex. I add a border of pink or blue for what ever it is. The pale grey, lemon and white did look very nice
