The new series starts on Tuesday 21st May at 9 pm so I'm looking forward to some wonderful sewing again.

The new presenter Kiell is also back to replace Sara Pascoe.

I'd love a pair of those garment of the week trousers, they were fabulous.
The right person was sent home, fancy putting an odd piece of material in the blouse when they were asked to make it from a tablecloth, surely there is sufficient material in a tablecloth to make a complete blouse.

Farmor15 Wed 05-Jun-24 09:24:03

Some interesting challenges this year - I wonder is the pattern for the blouses from tablecloths available anywhere? On the one hand I think it's a shame to cut them up, on the other the embroidery at least gets seen instead of put away in a drawer forever!

Farmor15 Wed 05-Jun-24 09:19:46

The older man is pretty good, despite his mistakes. But he'll probably only last a few more weeks.

Parsley3 Wed 05-Jun-24 09:19:05

She did deserve to go because she thought she was being "naughty" by not doing what she was asked for. She should have gone last week.
Those trousers were indeed special.

Fairislecable Wed 05-Jun-24 09:17:07

Last night showed exactly the challenge, those wonderful perfect trousers and the man making shirt AND trousers.

Perfection is the key rather than rushing in the limited time available.

I love watching Sewing Bee.

There seem to be only a few good ones this year - did they deliberately choose contestants that would make such basic mistakes! The one that left last night definitely deserved to go.

Visgir1 Wed 05-Jun-24 08:40:50

Allsorts:agree how fabulous were those trousers. That was exceptional design and skill, think this bunch of contestants are pretty good atm.

Allsorts Wed 05-Jun-24 07:16:25

I thought those trousers last night were exceptional, that must be a money maker. Her design and attention to detail must surely catch the eye if some famous designer. Jolly good programme, nice to have a presenter who doesn’t make it about him.

As, generally, a non-tv watcher. The new presenter is entirely unknown to me, but so far he has my support. he knows that he is there to present and to talk to contestants, quickly and in short periods, so as not to distract them from their sewing. He also realises that it is not all about him.

Cathy04 I'd be quite happy if they just worked through all the cast of Ghosts as hosts. Ben Willbond next?

Gin Wed 22-May-24 11:47:16

I have not seen it yet but have always enjoyed it in the past. It is interesting that a lot of posters do not like sewing but like watching. I suppose the same as me watching ‘Landscape Artist of the Year’, I am no good at painting.

One thing about these shows, be it pottery, art or sewing, why do you need a funny compère? Why do we not just watch these talented contestants? I find their antics intrusive and often anything but funny. The only one I almost like is the Irish lady from ‘Derry Girls’ on the pottery showdown.

Dottydots Wed 22-May-24 11:31:45

I thoroughly enjoyed part one last night. I used to make my own dresses but now in old age can barely thread a needle. I, too thought the new presenter was perfect and not too over the top.

Cathy04 Wed 22-May-24 11:28:33

I enjoyed last night’s show. Kiell was very good although I enjoyed Ghosts so I may be biased.
The pressure not to be the first one to leave must be intense also first night nerves. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Callistemon21 Wed 22-May-24 11:22:56

Thank goodness, I don't think Kiell is going to be OTT and make it all about him 🙂

Visgir1 Wed 22-May-24 11:20:03

I think Kiell is good has a dry and clever wit with the sewers.
The first choice the skirt, it wasn't that difficult (I could do it and have) I think they over thought the process.

The is definitely no stand out yet, so going to be a interesting watch.

Athrawes Wed 22-May-24 10:29:40

Really enjoyed it last night. However I did think their task was rather difficult for their first go. I must say though that the clothes they produced were certainly interesting with all the different fabrics. I like Esme and Patrick - they've mellowed since the first episodes. I used to do a lot of sewing - but at my pace!!! Having to make something in just a couple of hours would make me grey haired. Whoops! I've got grey hair shock

Grammaretto Wed 22-May-24 08:08:24

I agree that that panelled topstitched denim skirt with buttons was not a sensible first garment. None of the contestants finished so surely no fault of their own.
It would have taken me 3 hours to do one buttonhole and the diagrams don't look easy to follow.

YorkLady Wed 22-May-24 04:48:20

I too liked Kiell.
Are there more sewing contestants this year? The room looked very busy and full.

BlueBelle Wed 22-May-24 04:39:25

Oops must have slept through it only saw the introduction 🤣🤣🤣 the new guy seemed nice

Deedaa Tue 21-May-24 23:29:39

The 84 year old gentleman is making me feel very inadequate. It's taken me all afternoon to hem a summer top! I think some of the competitors are going to be really good,

Greta Tue 21-May-24 23:28:16

I thought the first task was too challenging for the contestants. Also, they are bound to be nervous right at the beginning.
I'm afraid I never liked Sara Pascoe. She tried too hard to be funny and it all became a bit phoney.

Grandmabatty Tue 21-May-24 22:50:41

I think nerves got the better of many of them tonight. Their timings were off. The garment of the week was good and I don't disagree with the contestant who went home, although many others could have too.

M0nica Tue 21-May-24 22:28:42

I am the opposie of you charley68 I loathed Cladia and Sara Pascoe, but I liked Jo Lycett and really like Kiell, if his first episode is a good sample of his style.

Like others I was surprised to see so many unfinished garments today. But so far no one stands out.

charley68 Tue 21-May-24 22:09:19

I did enjoy Kiell presenting the show, I think he will do very well, and this first episode was good, and made everyone at ease. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

I found Claudia too 'shouty' as she can be on Strictly. I did not like Joe Lycet, and Sara Pascoe was also fun to watch and also made the contestants comfortable as Kiell has done.

Grammaretto Tue 21-May-24 22:01:41

Someone phoned me mid show! I shall have to find it on iplayer.

I always enjoy it though not quite enough to get my sewing machine out.
