Continuous bias from a fat quarter

It was a revelation, I found a lifting pins and needles youtube video called making continuous bias

I started with a 17" square and ended with 13 yards of 3/4" bias. So easy, very neat and only 2 seams to sew

I have an unused electric bias binder maker, it folds and heats the strip and I used it for the first time last night. The process has been a revelation

I do have the had-making devices but last time I burnt my finger

I can remember learning that in the mists of time, but had totally forgotten about it.

That is a blast from the past😀

I thought the post was going to be about something else entirely until I saw it was under Arts and Crafts 😊

So did I, until I remembered what a fat quarter was.

Me too and as a non crafter I’m still none the wiser!

I see. You do all the little joins as two long joins, before cutting the strips! Neat.

Grandma70s Thu 13-Jun-24 10:35:24

This is a foreign language!

I thought it was a thread about Boris Johnson expressing his biased views once again.
What is a sewing machine?😉

I just love the title of this thread. Took me a minute to work it out. No interest in how its done and I'll never do it, but it has given me a laugh. Thanks grin

karmalady, thank you for flagging the YouTube video up. Lifting Pins and Needles is one of my favourite sites but I had not spotted the clever bias binding make.

I have a fairly free afternoon and will give it a go! I don't have the electric bias binding maker but have those little tools that you use with an iron. I pin the end of the fabric strip to the ironing board when it comes through the tool and have managed to avoid burnt fingers (so far!)

I had to come on this thread just because of its title. I have nothing to contribute to the discussion.

I had no idea there was any such thing as an electric bias binder maker. GN is a constant source of knowledge.

There I was thinking this was something about GB News.

Sounds interesting. I’m off to check it out on YouTube now….

I made two more lengths this afternoon, 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch. I did remember to pre-wash the cotton first. It is very satisfying but be careful join the correct lines or you will just cut loops

grin the rest of you, you don`t know what you are missing

Aldom Thu 13-Jun-24 19:26:01

Well done Karmalady. Very satisfying to create your own bias binding. I would imagine it could be useful to use matching or contrasting fabrics when binding the edges of your hand made garments. I'm always in awe of the lovely clothes you make. Thank you for the information.

I don’t use enough to warrant a machine so have one of these kits.

I knew what it meant but couldn't fathom out how to do it!

I've only used fat quarters to make bunting.

True Karmalady. I have no idea.

The subject of the thread is interesting (although totally over my head) but some of the responses are even better. I love the idea of Boris Johnson as a fat quarter!

Me too.
This thread title has to be the funniest I’ve seen in a long time.

I knew what a fat quarter was but really, life is too short…..

If you make a lot of your own clothes, being able to make bias strips to match or blend with the fabric is a great idea.
I don't do that much sewing now and was only introduced to fat quarters a few years ago, made reams of Christmas bunting (using ready-made bias binding and ribbon).

Oops, I mentioned the 'C' word and it's not even Midsummer's Day yet. blush

Making bunting and bias from fat quarters. It sounds like some sort of comment about politics today.
