Rug making kit, crochet, glass painting.
Bereavement wipes out everything
I'd like to try something new as a form of relaxation and am thinking of taking up a craft of some sort. I must admit I'm not good at practical things involving using my hands, but I admire people who can make things. I've tried knitting and pottery painting, without much success. I usually do pilates and creative writing to relax.
I'd be very grateful for some ideas from creative grans.

If you look on Freeview channel 73 from 1pm they sell lovely card kits . I like hunkydory, they include backing card , toppers , inserts and show you how to put them together.
I've been making cards for 12 years now and have recently made a lovely wedding card which my daughter had to give her friend on her wedding day . Gave my d.i.l a handmade birthday card. Now going to start a card for my grandson's 5th birthday recently . I really enjoy creating my own ideas , especially for family who all keep my cards . I love making Christmas cards too, I always add white glitter , it looks like snow
Temari balls are a lovely craft. Little Japanese balls, originally made of a roll of fabric (but these days a polystyrene ball) covered in wool, and then sewing thread, .Guide lines are marked out using glass headed pins, and then simple or complicated patterns are stitched. Amazon do a kit (with instructions and everything you need) for £20. An inspiration book by Mary Wood can be picked up 2nd hand - is it now out of print?
Google some photos. The simple ones are easy - I've done it with kids. I think I might start doing them again.
If you look in your local paper you may see various groups that meet for crafts of all sorts which you could try out. Dont know if you have any garden , but I do think gardening is really very good for many things. The pleasure of planting something and watching it grow, planning different pots to go through the year. But also how very satisfying it is to go out with your secateurs. Practically it is good to cut out dead branches and trim things back but even more satisfying I find it is to do that when I have got annoyed at Putin Trump etc and I snip with the thoughts of them in mind!! Also if you enjoy gardening there is usually a club locally where you can meet other gardeners, swap tips and plants , and visit other lovely gardens.
That sounds like a great idea! Trying something new can be really refreshing. Even if you don’t feel super confident with hands-on crafts, it’s all about enjoying the process.Maybe something simple like collage art, adult coloring books, or even candle making could be fun and low-pressure. Just go with whatever feels relaxing!

I agree it's a good idea to start small with diamond art, Karen22. I've decided that bookmarks might be good to start off with.
I'll have a look at quilting, Whywhywhy and see if there's a group I can join.
I'm going to see if I can use Craft Buddy Crystal Art for some of my own greeting cards, Nunato3. Thanks for suggesting it.
Thanks to all you creative grans who have suggested all these wonderful crafts I can try. I'm going to start small but will let you know how I get on.
Have a look on the craft buddy website for ideas .
They have lovely things .

There are some glass making classes close to me, so that's another thing to look into, thanks 4allweknow.
Thanks for letting me know about hardanger embroidery, Growingolddisgracefu
Travelsofar, thanks for suggesting watercolour painting. I have friends who do this with amazing results.
I'll certainly take a look at tatting, NannyLinda72 and thanks for offering to help me if I have a go.
I've recently started doing jigsaws, LovetoTravel, and am starting to progress to more difficult ones. They're very relaxing!
It's good to hear from someone who likes the same things as me, PilgrimQuill. My writing projects aren't at all ready to be published but I wish you the best of luck with your book.
I'm going to look into making beaded jewellery. Thanks for your suggestion, Juniel. Thanks also to MooMoo. I've tried helping my grandchildren with lego and have found they're much better than me!
I love the picture of your Easter egg tree made by quilling, Gillyknits.
Thanks also to Lemonred. Scrapbooking would bring a lot of satisfaction. I agree with your advice to "start simple."

Have you tried Diamond Art, very relaxing. I also do Cross Stitch and started Quilting at the start of Lockdown. Thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with the lovely ladies at retreats.
I’ve recently started doing this, I had never heard of it until a friend told me about it. There are some lovely kits available on Amazon and it’s very easy. I’ve also started to learn how to crochet, plenty of tutorials on YouTube and if the pattern you are following doesn’t work out, so what? Jigsaw puzzles are another good hobby, if you’re on Facebook there are plenty of buy, sell and swap groups.
I've found Craft Buddy kits are better . They come already framed and ready to hang if a picture .
Have you looked at Craft Buddy Crystal Art ?
They are so easy to do and when it's finished you have a lovely sparkly picture to hang on the wall . The kits come with everything you need , framed ready to hang if a picture .
I've done 2 pictures and even done birthday and Christmas cards . Very simple to do and you can pick it up and put it down as you like as there isn't a pattern to remember. They do cushion covers and all sorts of things .I find them really relaxing . Google Craft Buddy website.
Have a browse in The Works .
It's an inexpensive shop and has many craft ideas.
I originally used it as a source for card making .
Now I buy many gifts and my art supplies there .
I learned to knit when I was nine but it’s all down to practice. I’m self taught with crochet and also watercolour painting. Why not try quilting? Odd bits of fabric can make some fabulous things. YouTube have great tutorials. My mam used to say practice, practice and mire practice. Happy crafting.
As others have suggested Diamond Art, you can make small items like book marks, coasters , key rings to larger pictures.
A lady in our church introduced me to it and she makes animal coasters and gives them away as little gifts, it's fairly easy and I've now introduced it to my 5 yr old GD and she loves it !
I buy my kits from Temu as its so cheap .
It's a good idea to ask if anyone in my local knitting/crochet groups would be able to give me a couple of lessons for some payment, Welshpoppy.
Thanks for sharing your experience of crocheting RedRidingHood. I'm keen to give it a go, especially if I can make blankets fairly easily.
Thanks for the tip for if I try needle felting, Chocolatelovinggran!
I've found a Knit and Natter group I might try Sewnsew. I have a feeling everyone will be really good at knitting and crochet, but I'd like to give it a go. So many of you recommend crochet so I'm particularly keen to try that.
I love Japanese embroidery Crissy. You can buy kits for this so it's definitely worth giving it a go.
I think painting by numbers for adults is something I could probably do, Janiepops. It's brilliant if you can send one of your own photos to be transferred onto canvas.
It's a good idea to look at local groups, Whiff. I've found a Knit and Natter group at my local library. There's also a pottery making group I'd really like to join, but it's a bit of a drive away.
I'm looking at some beautiful diamond art pictures, Marty75. Perhaps it's something to consider if I have some luck with a couple of easier crafts first. I admire people who can quilt - there's so much creative talent around.
I'd need a lot of help with crocheting, TiggyW but I agree it's well worth the effort. I'll look out for a macrame kit as this sounds like fun. I'm going to start off with card making this summer, as it's something I can do easily and I know home-made cards would be appreciated.
I've just had a look at what you can do with a cricut. Personalised jigsaw puzzles appeal to me! I hadn't heard of this before. Thanks, Sarahr.
I'm not good at sketching unfortunately, but I'd certainly give photography a go. Thanks, Ronib.
A U3A craft group is a good idea, especially if there's plenty of help on hand, as you say, Allira.
