There's also a way to do reverse long tail cast on which is a mirror image of the regular way.

Hi I do alot of sock knitting and find long tail cast on very stretchy so yes go on YouTube don't think I've ever used German twist.

Same here. Husband gets swollen ankles so these tops are nice and elastic.

Thank you for this thread by the way! I knit Portuguese style and am always looking for a good stretchy cast on and have never heard of the German Twist method .

Oh thank you. I will get that.

I’ve decided that as far as possible I will try and make everything that I wear. Not sure how long that ambition will last, I think it very much depends on the end result.

I haven’t started the long tail yet as I am a lark and I am no good in the evening.

Can I suggest an excellent little book called Cast On, Bind Off by Leslie Ann Bestor.

It comes in ring-bound format so it lies nice and flat and has every cast on and bind off method you could ever need.

You’re talking a foreign language 🤣🤣

Thanks for your help and replies

Yes I’ve had a look, 😬😬😬. But I did like the finish. Apparently if you are casting on rib, then you use long tail for plain and German twist for purl.

I think I’ll give it a go. I don’t want the sweater until winter so plenty of time.

I might be some time😀😀

Yes, I always use German Twisted Cast On it as it provides a much stretchier foundation for sweaters and essential for top down sock ribs imo.

There are lots of tutorials online but I find Roxanne Richardson's comparison of different kinds of cast on the most comprehensive. She explains the difference between LTCO and GTCO at 12:54.

I’m just about to start a jumper, and wondered if it was worth learning this method which is supposed to be stretchy snd more stable than the two needle method?

Thanks in advance.
