It's back!

Starting on Tuesday 15th July at 9 pm.

I really like Esme. She has a wealth of experience and copes well with a hearing impairment which probably a lot of people don't realise.

Allira Thu 14-Aug-25 10:50:37

Esme Young is a designer, costume maker, has designed costumes for famous films, founded her own fashion firm and lectures still in fashion and design.

I think she knows what she's talking about, as does Patrick.

I am pleased that Dan won this week. He won the pattern challenge and his final garment was very wearable. Kit is very talented and has only been keen on sewing for just over a year. Overall, Jess has had more lower placings than Gaynor and Patrick said he knew Gaynor could do better so perhaps that's why Jess went home this week instead of Gaynor but it was a close call.
Esme Young may be deemed past it by some on here but she has enormous experience of the textile and design industry so a bit of respect for Esme please.

Thousands of tents are destroyed after festivals and other events every year though, people treat them as disposables, and not many people want to buy them second hand unfortunately, so actually this was one of the most sustainable reuse transformations, because there’s not much you can do with tents nobody wants.

Orla is quietly doing a good job too I think, she always makes clothes that are wearable. Dan is my favourite, he is genuinely amazed when he makes something the judges like, and I think he has flair.

Gaynor would have fitted in a treat with the first 3 or 4 episodes. Proper home sewers who knew the basics but were challenged with some advanced techniques and pattern making/design.

Now it's far removed from that and I wish they would make a separate design show so that this can get back to actual sewing.

It's the same with all these type of programmes, Bake Off, Pottery Throw Down etc. The programme makers seem to think viewers have the humour and concentration span of a 5 year old and just make it all more bizarre and complicated and outlandish just in case we get fed up. When in fact we all liked it as it was.

I can’t watch this awful programme anymore.
Sarah pasco is cringe-making, Esme is just past it , Patrick is ok , but the stupid jokes and carry on is just purile.
The awful things they make are a joke.

How this programme can carry on I just don’t understand.

Fair enough but many of us still enjoy it.

Luckygirl3 Thu 14-Aug-25 08:46:01

I also hate the transformation challenge - it always involves wastage and this was even more unacceptable and somewhat ironic on reuse/recycle week. Don't turn a perfectly good tent into something unwearable - put it on Freecycle so someone can have use of it!!

Sparklefizz Thu 14-Aug-25 08:22:10

The transformation challenge is a waste of time destroying items that could be reused just as they are, and making unwearable items instead. I would rather see and learn more decent sewing techniques, even if it didn't involve the contestants.

For the made to measure, I thought Stuart's outfit was awful. It really just looked like a skirt badly made from a man's jacket and a top made from a shirt. Who on earth would want to wear it? I thought he would be going home.

Was really surprised that Caz's jeans jumpsuit turned out as well as it did after her drawing attention to the worn crotch of her husband's old gardening jeans shock. The final outfit looked very 1970s.

But Dan's dress was really good and he definitely deserved Garment of the Week. I thought Kit and Caz were the 2 leaders but now Dan is creeping up behind.

eddiecat78 Thu 14-Aug-25 07:38:15

Early on in the series I'd like to see them make quite a simple garment but perfectly finished - inside and out - no overlocking allowed.

Allira Wed 13-Aug-25 22:30:38

Yes, it was.

I really don't know how they're expected to make a properly finished, wearable garment in the time available.

Sorry! I don't agree with the result this week, I thought Jess redeemed herself in the Final Challenge.

I'm not sure who should have gone, perhaps no-one this week?

If they hadn't played the 'no-one is going home this week' card the other week, I think they would have played it this week. I didn't think anyone deserved to go this time.
I thought the made-to-measures were special this episode, but they did need another hour, because it was a transformation and a made-to-measure in one

Esme's only three years younger than me but has far more get up and go than I have.

Well I certainly do still enjoy it and think it’s very rude to say that ā€œ Esme is just past itā€ particularly on this gransnet!

Well, it did give me pause for thought because EsmĆ© is younger than me šŸ˜€

Caz looked very pleased with her outfit and it did look wearable but Dan's dress was lovely and deserved to be garment of the week. I did not like the outfit reclaimed from a man's shirt and jacket even if the judges did. It was awful.

ayse Wed 13-Aug-25 15:37:33

I used to watch Sewing Bee avidly.

These days I’ve given up on it as I can’t learn anything more. I do wish the BBC would have a proper sewing programme showing how to do some of the more complicated stuff.

midgey Wed 13-Aug-25 13:46:10

Sarah Pascoe simply utters the script she has been given just as Joe Lycett did. I do think the script writers deliver a script suitable for very small children!
I wish I could sew as well as the worst of them.

Millie22 Wed 13-Aug-25 13:34:28

I loved Dan's dress made from pyjamas. It's my favourite of the series so far.

ginny Wed 13-Aug-25 11:18:14

Loved that garment of the week.

Grandmabatty Wed 13-Aug-25 11:15:57

I thought Jess expected to go last night after the first two rounds were so awful for her. Her made to measure was lovely but a raw edge on her peplum let it down. Gaynor thought she was going - you could tell by her face! I feel Gaynor is on a shoogly peg. Orla didn't produce her usual high standard.

Gingster Tue 12-Aug-25 22:30:29

Allira Tue 12-Aug-25 22:16:48

Yes, I thought Gaynor might be the one to go.

The time restriction doesn't really let us see what excellent sewers they could be.

eddiecat78 Tue 12-Aug-25 22:14:00

I think Gaynor is struggling. In real life she is probably the most competent sewer but she's not happy rushing

I am caught up now and I agree that Novello was the correct choice. She was lucky to have made it this far imo. I fancy Kit and Orla for finalists and while Caz is coming up with some original ideas I thought that last week's Dorothy dress was awful and this week's was too fussy. But then who am I to judge?
Also, Esme and Patrick should ditch the toe curlingly awful jokes.
