I liked the painting that won this week. I liked her submission piece too. I wasn't keen on the one with all the coloured lines, I would have picked the one with the two figures instead. I thought the Wild Card winner was amazing. Fancy being able to do that with impaired vision.

Yes, I liked the one with the figures, too. I started watching the repeat and fell asleep too so I still need to watch it properly. At least the orange one didn’t win. Having said that, they were all pretty good. Have they always sat and discussed all of the paintings before or is that new? If so it was good to get an insight into how they make their choices.

For all those who disagree with the judges, yes, art is utterly subjective. Nobody likes everything.

Go to some art galleries, here, abroad, lots to choose from. Pick say half a dozen well-known and much praised and admired artists, say . . .Holbein, Rubens, Canaletto, Bruegel, Renoir, Picasso . . .(many many more of course, it's YOUR list!) . . . see if you like them all. Maybe you do, others wouldn't. Choose another group, at some point you'll find a few that you think are utter tripe. Just an opinion . . .get the picture?!

Always enjoy it but I’m often bemused by some of the paintings that look as if they’ve been done by my 8 year old DGD but get high praise from the judges. Others, that I think are simply wonderful are skated over. I must be missing something.

I didn’t realise that DT was an artist! 😜

Took me about four efforts to see the programme right through .
I think that I find it relaxing and doze off !
I liked Kim's panting a great deal as I appreciated her interpretation of colour .
Soke of the submissions looked promising but I was disappointed with their effort on the programme .

For those of you who love to paint landscapes there's going to be a new format for wildcards,which sounds exciting .

Have you seen the news about next year? The same artists will appear on each show, moving to different locations every week and one person eliminated each time.

With intrusive cameras, interruptions from the judges, the public close by as well as the vagaries of the weather, that beautiful plein air paintings can be made in just four hours is astonishing.

I picked two of the three finalists last week and couldn’t really decide between the two women.

I’d like to see the same contestants challenged with different landscapes so that we can see them work with pastoral, marine, urban, industrial scenes etc. The new format will be a welcome change.

I like the new judge, Eva Langret, too.

I love painting landscapes ,but I'd find the intrusive cameras and interruptions from judges really distracting-Graphite .
If painting outdoors the public can get in your face though they don't mean to be annoying .
I like the new judge as well . She seems knowledgeable.
I found Ms Sorriano a bit much with her comments and I don't usually .

Your comment about the public reminds me of when I was a student Esmay I remember once sitting drawing the ruins of Knaresborough Castle when a group of lads came up and asked me what I was drawing. Drawing of castle on my lap, large castle smack in front of me! Talk about lost for words!

People say sone strange things when you paint and draw outside.
Several people asked me back to paint their cats and dogs. ,which isn't really my thing .
I could probably make a living painting pets Refuse and it causes offence -too stuck up /posh are we ?

Well I wasn ‘to keen on any of the three chosen last night, but the winner, I suppose was the best of the three. But they all had trademarks. Why can’t they just paint what’s in front of them? Perhaps they can’t .

I so agree! I was definitely underwhelmed this week ...

We only watched half the programme last night, there wasn’t a single painting that stood out from the rest. Very poor ‘mark making’ and very poor judging in this series.

I liked all three of the shortlist this week. i particularly liked the winner because his style was rather like my own

You went to art school , as did I. I studied fine are so that influences my opinions obviously. I don’t understand this ignoring what is before your eyes, for technique,

The big influences on me when I was at art school JamesandJon33 were Grahame Sutherland, Michael Ayrton, and Elizabeth Frink, so what is before my eyes has always just been a starting point. I also became friendly with a lovely artist called Roy Walker when I lived in Cornwall, and he made me rethink everything I did. I tried being more conventional when I joined my current painting group, but the painting just takes over and I go off in another direction.

I understand that*Deedaa*. You go where your painting leads, as do I. These people start off with a gimmick and force their painting into it.

I'd like to try the marbling technique that the winner was using. I think it would work well with some of mine. I wasn't very taken with any of the Skiddaw paintings. None of them seemed to live up to their submission paintings.

When I taught art we did loads of marbling. Even in the Infants’. A bit messy but the results were good. Have fun with that.

I have just watched the final episode where the winner creates the commission and it is unveiled.
I would be very interested to know thevreactions of others.....

I watched it last night but am watching it again. I still don’t understand why some of them get through to the next round. Or why the judges reintroduced someone who hadn’t won their heat. I must admit to being rather underwhelmed by the commissioned painting although it did seem something quite difficult to paint.

I am working my way through the progs. My husband and I discuss and choose our “winners” but don’t tell each other. We are always shocked at what the judges choose because they are often the ones we disliked most!

I just saw a close up of the commission on Facebook and there’s a lot more colour in it than I saw on the tv. I guess these paintings have to be seen in the flesh to appreciate them.

MayBee70 I think someone must have had second thoughts about their choice so9 they brought back the chap who hadn't got through. I did like his work, but I don't think he would have been right for the commission. I've just watched the final. I wasn't sure about the artist who won until I saw the beautiful painting she did at home. I'll watch tomorrow and see what she makes of the mountain.
