What is the point of fishing?

It has always puzzled me that fishermen (or women) enjoy sitting for hours watching a float in order to maim fish then throw them back. Also you will never convince me that they are cold blooded so feel no pain. Perhaps you grandads can enlighten me. By the way, if you use ground bait, see my comment in the 'thrifty tips' thread.

Those hooks do get stuck into your fingers when you cast the line, though, Soutra and they hurt. I think I will just go to the fishmongers and buy some cod or haddock, or perhaps a good red herring.

Elegran, Merlot aand Granny23 - I hope you are safely tucked behind the sofa or you could come and join us- rods and bait entirely optional. grin

!!! That was a really nice message I posted to Eliza! Why has that been deleted?!

BlueBelle Mon 27-Jan-14 16:10:21

I m with you Shysal think it not a nice thing at all and don't buy the fish are fine bit ifs its proved they don't feel pain in their mouths I ll accept that because I don't know but for a fish to be flung out of its environment and struggle to breath seems horrible I m sure you are all environmentally friendly people on here and put them in a net in the water but many don't I have seen them writhing around and being only half killed I can only see a point in it if they are instantly killed and taken home to cook

There are two points for fishing
1. It gets husbands (mostly) from under their wives/partners feet
2. It's gets husbands/partners some piece and quiet.
A bit like golf really.

Afternoon all, just a reminder to please use the report button if you have concerns about a poster - and avoid any speculation about who's-whatsit-now etc. on the thread. As you were!

MamaCaz Mon 27-Jan-14 15:45:43

To repeat the expression I used yesterday, Reject Gnomes, the lot of them!

But DH bought me a rod for Christmas because I expressed an interest in shore fishing last summer, so looks like I'm about to become a reject gnome too grin

granjura Mon 27-Jan-14 14:46:54

I thought this thread was about fishing- maybe it was fishing for information ;)

BTW apologies for often mentioning how things are done in my part of the world, compared to the UK (where I lived all my adult life until recently). I am sure some are saying, for goodness sake, why should I be interested in what happens somewhere else?!? Personally, I have always been fascinated with how things are dealt with in different cultures and countries, be it education, health care, whatever. So, hope you won't mind me saying 'well, here we do it this or that way' - thanks smile

Yes, Elegran I had forgotten all about Cheelu (and the trouble she caused) until this thread -
www.gransnet.com/forums/ask_a_gran/1203624-Your-opinion-and-suggestions-please?reverse=1 -
appeared and a little niggle started in my brain - which suddenly clicked when I saw the posts, in close proximity on this thread. Hence my question to Eliza.

merlotgran Mon 27-Jan-14 14:41:41

Hasn't eliza resurrected quite a few threads?

Elegran Mon 27-Jan-14 14:35:55

No, got that wrong, it was a name I couldn't remember, on some other thread or other.

Elegran Mon 27-Jan-14 14:34:37

That was the name I remembered the other day! Cheelu!

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 27-Jan-14 14:25:21

Soutra Mon 27-Jan-14 14:19:12

Oops - I seem to have trodden on toes after all (not yours I hope Aka)
grin

What was wrong with that? As far as I know there is nothing wrong with reincarnating oneself under another monicker (is there Jingl?) and I did say "Welcome back" sad

Aka Mon 27-Jan-14 12:58:23

Not in this weather either!

absent Mon 27-Jan-14 12:54:28
