Silver travel adviser even

Greatnan Thu 13-Jun-13 04:57:33

Now I am disappointed, Galen - I thought you were getting into the diver/snorkelling world!
I don't know how much Vit D I am getting this week - I am keeping covered up even when I am snorkelling - long cotton trousers and a tee shirt over my swimming costume. The sun is unbelievably strong here in Egypt - even just walking the 100 yards from my room to the beach wearing a big sun hat has deepened my usual slight tan.

Galen Thu 13-Jun-13 08:34:29

Probably more than you think unless you're wearing a burka ?

annodomini Thu 13-Jun-13 08:44:54

Presumably you are snorkelling in your sunhat, Greatnan, to protect your head and neck?

MiceElf Thu 13-Jun-13 09:16:13

I think we need a photo grin

Oldgreymare Thu 13-Jun-13 09:47:28

Jess hoping to boost my Vit D levels next week! ( smile Newborough by any chance?

JessM Thu 13-Jun-13 10:05:27

yup, got it in one. Main carpark (very new and posh) full so we were kind of off-piste in the forests and marshes grin It is glorious and strong competition for the end of Gower.
greatnan my OH once got badly sunburned on his back while snorkelling in Australia with a t shirt on.

Greatnan Thu 13-Jun-13 10:57:43

I learnt the lesson the hard way when I first started snorkelling in Malaysia in 1997 - horribly burnt thighs and calves, which made it very hard to sit down. It hasn't happened since - I am now even wearing long socks with my trouser bottoms tucked into them. They help when walking on the little sharp pebbles at the edge of the sea, too. I look very bizarre, but as there is nobody but the man at the beach kiosk who brings me towels and drinks, it doesn't matter.
I really don't like deep tans, but I am well on the way to looking like somebody out of TOWIE in spite of my big sun hat, long sleeve blouse and trousers which I wear on my way to the restaurant.
I can't get a photo of myself as there is nobody on the beach but me, but I have put some of the hotel's own pictures on my FB page. I don't have an underwater camera, but the owner has taken some wonderful pictures of the reef and the fish - they are on the Swisscare Resort Hotel FB page.

When at Newborough Warren do look at the lovely old pillow lavas at the western end of Newborough beach as you walk to Llanddwyn island. They are the the piled up greenish rounded rocks folded on top of each other. 600 million years old those were erupted under an ocean. Look out for them and admire!

I am a one woman Geology is fun campaign. wink

Nelliemoser Thu 13-Jun-13 19:57:04

I know basalt pillow lavas are not vitamins but looking at such excellent examples in such a lovely setting make me feel better. smile

JessM Thu 13-Jun-13 20:09:19

Oh yes I saw those last week! But I came home with a cold sad
The tidal current forcing itself through, under the Menai Bridge is something to behold as well. smile How on earth did they build that massive thing in those surging waters?

Aka Thu 13-Jun-13 22:57:39

Perhaps your immune system needs boosting Jess .. Have you tried echinacea grin

JessM Fri 14-Jun-13 17:58:49

Oo you are a tease aka grin

Nelliemoser Fri 14-Jun-13 19:42:05

JessM I expect Thomas Telford did a Moses and raised his rod to part the waters. Those rush tides have claimed a good few small boats etc over the years.

JessM Sat 15-Jun-13 17:04:35

Just possibly nellie. I am very excited cos we are going to be living about 5 minutes from the foot of the bridge soon! OH used to row for the Uni team and they never ventured west of the bridge - far too dangerous.
It's a beautiful bridge when you drive over it, but when you look up at it shock

Nelliemoser Sat 15-Jun-13 17:17:59

JessM I just love Snowdonia. envy

The Menai Straits are popular for sailing. DS used to sail there when he was at Bangor uni.

Tegan Sat 15-Jun-13 19:25:43

Headline; Do vitamins really work. Potted version of reply [several pages later]..The Menai Straits are popular for sailing.....love it grin....[it's a bit like that Two Ronnies Mastermind sketch]

Thanks to this thread, I've realised that I'm most likely deficient in Vit B12.
I thought I had dementia!
I've been to the health food shop and if I don't feel any improvement after a couple of weeks, I shall visit my GP.

overthehill Mon 17-Jun-13 12:54:32

Some people say you should get all the vitamins you need from your food and yes you should. However, produce can be flown many miles before it reaches the shops then it waits for the shopper then the shopper takes it home and maybe puts in the fridge for a couple of days so by this time the vitamin content is sadly depleted.

Also, even home grown stuff is grown in soil that has far less nutrients than in the 1930s.

I therefore take supplements and have done since my 40s when I was frequently getting colds. I found vast improvement after doing so.

I take Garlic Capsules, zinc, multi vit, vit E, cod liver oil and recently turmeric as it is supposed to help brain function.

Ariadne Mon 17-Jun-13 13:17:02

That's interesting, over - isn't turmeric also supposed to be a natural anti inflammatory? Think I might give it a whirl.

I take B complex, because I'm vegetarian, and linseed oils (ditto).

Bags Mon 17-Jun-13 13:44:04

ella, you can get three-monthly B12 injections from your GP if you are short of B12. A simple blood test would show whether you are or not.

nightowl Mon 17-Jun-13 13:48:49

I have been vegetarian for over 40 years and have never taken supplements. I feel very healthy (touch wood) so must be doing something right. I know there can be an issue with some of the B vitamins but I can't believe dietary requirements are an exact science. I will keep on doing what I'm doing until my body tells me otherwise.

I did give my dog Vitamin E and coenzyme Q10 when she was in heart failure. I believe there is some research evidence about the use of these supplements in humans.

nightowl Mon 17-Jun-13 13:56:09

When I said I don't think it's an exact science I do of course accept that a blood test would show a deficiency! I posted before I saw your post Bags
