DH (bless him) has suggested that we invite a few friends from the village in for a lunchtime drink on New Year's Eve. Bearing in mind that I will be exhausted from our family get-together on 28th and that DD2, her husband and 2 DGDs are staying until 30th, what can anyone suggest that is really, really easy?

We used to regularly have little parties like this a few years ago but one friend died, one family moved and two split up so the socialising fell by the wayside and we'd like to try to get it going again.

glass missed your post yesterday sweetie in answer to your question there are a few people who could be missing their heads if they don't stop being a pain in the perverbial.tchgrin

Buy Blinis in any supermarket then put a smear of cream cheese
on them, topped with smoked salmon and some lumpfish roe that looks like caviar!

Mulled wine would be better for an evening do - you can dilute it a bit more (canny Scot here) with the orange juice, but seriously as people may wish to drive, it is less alcoholic. Is it an evening or a daytime do? If daytime, I'd do Buck's Fuzz with Prosecco (waste of good champagne) because again people can drink lots and be "merry" without too many side effects.

Soutra mentions anchovy allumettes - my very favourite, they are nice with a bit of parmesan sprinkled on top. I cut the pastry into circles and pop one fish into each centre so that the head and tail stick out, but the pinwheels are much quicker to make.

My suggestion is a pack of cheap frozen mini yorkshires, with a sliver of thinly sliced beef (use packeted pastrami perhaps) and add a tsp of creamed horseradish.

Also as Soutra's chicken, but use sausages instead. I buy normal sausages and twist them in half to make twice as many, cook them, drain off the fat then add the sticky coating and cook again.

glammanana Sat 07-Dec-13 18:54:09

I've done the same glass for my orders but over the past few weeks when I have been doing an outside catering booking I have made extra's and put to one side of the freezer with little xmas heads stuck on the boxes so I know what is for my hungry brood.tchsmile

kitty have a look at one of the online supermarkets whoever delivers in your area for party nibbles, place order as soon as the date is available (if you have a delivery saver with Tesco all the dates were released on the 27th Nov, I am booked up to the New Year) for the date you want then you dont even have to leave the house. Then you will be sorted and can put your feet up.

Tip a pack of Philly into a dish, pour over a bottle of sweet chilli sauce and serve with anything which can be dipped in - for ease, posh crisps, or for a bit more effort a few crudites ! Scrummy and popular with the united nations ex-pats in Beijing !

kittylester Sat 07-Dec-13 17:33:59

DH is in charge of drinks - far more important. I suggested mulled wine but he's thinking champagne (or the like!) cocktails!

Ariadne Sat 07-Dec-13 17:32:49

You go to M & S and I'll bring the wine, courtesy of many trips to France! Just say when. (Do I feel a party coming on?)

Charleygirl Sat 07-Dec-13 17:20:20

DH did the inviting, can he not do the cooking or the organising?! If not, I would definitely book Soutra to do the cooking and presentation.

kittylester Sat 07-Dec-13 17:11:42

Please all come - it would be great, especially Soutra if she'll do the cooking - great ideas there.

The Times had a section on bought canapes this morning - must make sure it doesn't get recycled.

I've preordered Christmas Day biker so I might have another look to see what the canapes are like.

I knew I could rely on you all - thank you. flowers

Soutra Sat 07-Dec-13 16:10:41

I can't believe that I have just given details for 10 ideas and the whole shooting match has disappeared!!
OK here we go again
Waitrose have some good boxes of freezable canapes - I got mine when they were 3 for 2!
OR if you really want to do any
1) mini meatballs (beef or lamb mince if lamb nice with added extra spice, inc cinnamon) served hot with variety of dips- home made tomato sauce, mustard,(not if using lamb) chutney
2) mini quiches - make in advance then warm up and puff up in the oven on the day
3) mini pizzas - I just cut circles out with a pastry cutter - the cheaper and more basic the pizza the better
4) anchovy allumetttes: one layer of puff pastry brushed with beaten egg, slivers of anchovies, second layer of puff pastry on top, roll out a bit to get them to stick together, cut into narrow strips and give on twist before baking or roll up into a swiss roll shape and cut into pinwheels before baking
5) mini blinis, dollop of Philly then a smidgeon of (fake- lumpfish) caviar on the top
6) smoked salmon pinwheels - sliced brown bread, give it an extra roll with a rolling pin to firm up the texture and help it to bend- spread with cream cheese, black pepper and s/salmon, roll into swiss roll shape, wrap in clingfilm to chill then unwrap and slice into pinwheels
7)cut circles of white sliced bread using a small pastry cutter brush both sides with melted butter then bake until golden. Spread anything you like on them - a good quality liver pate or kipper/mackerel pate
8) a "retro" cubed cheese and pineapple hedgehog (?)
9) chicken wings/drumsticks - baked in a barbecue sauce/honey and orange juice/tandoori mix and natural yogurt
10) &*CRISPS!!!!

bikergran Sat 07-Dec-13 15:44:16

in asda yesterday a lady was going round with tasters!!
very simple....A French stick sliced up and a selection of those Italian meats popped on the top..they were lovely.

mozzerla balls cut in half (the mini ones) with piece of rocket and half cherry tom on a cocktail stick..look really good...

google images of canapés/buffets....of course lots of ready made stuff about..

kittylester Sat 07-Dec-13 15:42:17

Thank you for the permission. tchgrin

I hope the supermarkets have stuff left after Christmas as I don't have any more freezer space.

Nelliemoser Sat 07-Dec-13 15:39:30

Life is far to short to stuff mushrooms! Check out all the supermarkets offerings and pick the nicest.
