When do you take yours down?

Evening all, all good wishes for the year etc.

Just wondering when you feel it is right/appropriate to take the decorations down?

Yes, I know it seems only a moment ago that I was asking for your support re actually putting any up, we did, and jolly festive (and of course tasteful!) they looked too!

Now, I know it is considered bad luck to leave them up beyond twelfth night, but what about doing it earlier than that?

I'm not prone to superstition, but could really do with all the luck in the world for the coming months, if not the year.

Many thanks!

I got rid of the cards (I will recycle them into something useful) as they look depressing when they fall over but I love our little tree with its cheery lights after dark. I also have a couple of candles I'm still using up. After Sunday I won't want to see the slightest hint of tinsel.

No festive food left at all, mores the pity!

I don't put a lot up in the way of decorations, just the tree and cards in the sitting room, and lights around the hall mirror and the large fake plant that gets moved into the hall to make room for the tree in the sitting room. I always think the hall looks really lovely, very large mahogany chest of drawers with antique mahogany framed mirror above, tiffany lamp in shades of burgundy on the chest, rug on the floor in toning colours. The plain fairy lights make it look so pretty, I'm always said when it goes back to "normal" as it looks so welcoming as you come in, or pass through on the way to the kitchen.

Somehow I don't miss the tree in the sitting room so much, as it is in a corner behind us, rather than facing it when sitting on the sofa. (That probably makes no sense at all!)

DBH&Son have obviously decided to 'clear up' all the chocolates. angry I found the empty boxes in the recycling this morning, one box I hadn't even had a single chocolate from! Cakes and stollen are not far behind, I have hidden three small lebkuchen. grin

Have a lovely wee break, baubles! I finished off the Pringles and then had a sensible bowl of lentil soup. There's roast beef for dinner and the potatoes and veg are peeled .....why then am I dithering over having a large bit of Christmas cake first, or having a quick rootle in the Roses tin.....? blush

Taken mine down too - suddenly got the urge because the sun was showing up all the dust and I just had to dust and vac up - so got the troop(s) organised and we've restored order. Looks a bit plain now - I miss the twinkles!

Somewhere good Baubles ?

DD's birthday is 7th January. When she was a child, ok, till she left home I would wait till she was in bed on the 6th to remove all traces of christmas then put up birthday balloons and streamers for her to see when she awoke on her birthday. smile

I've just taken down the decorations today as DH & I are going away in the morning for a couple of days and I couldn't bear the thought of having to do it when I come back.

Nonu Thu 02-Jan-14 15:34:09

just spoken with the "Boss" & told him 12th night Monday , but he said he wants them down on Sunday !
So there you are , Boo Hoo !

Epiphany, 6 january which is also a feast day here, when families and friends get together and eat a special cake with a paper crown on it, it contains a small token and the person who finds it wears the crown for the rest of the day.

My Mum would have been shocked if I'd taken my tree down before 12th Night but as she's no longer here, I'm going to do just that once my sister and BiL have left tomorrow. Sorry Mum!

sunseeker Thu 02-Jan-14 14:28:40

I still have almost a full tin of Quality Street left, also 4 boxes of chocolates given to me as presents (by the way I looked it up and 3 Quality Street sweets averages out at around 140 calories and a mince pie is around 160 - sorry I will go and sit in the corner!)

Maggiemaybe Thu 02-Jan-14 14:17:24

jingl I've just had Heroes, orange and lemon jelly slices, a mince pie and the last of the Pringles with the last of the salsa dip, in no particular order. I don't even fancy proper food anymore. smile

susieb755 Thu 02-Jan-14 13:41:05

I am an early starter, decs up on December 1st, but once new years eve partying is out the way, I take them down and have a jolly good clean before going back to work

jinglbellrocks Thu 02-Jan-14 13:40:47

How can it be over when I have just had sausage rolls, trifle and Xmas cake (second one) for my lunch?

jinglbellrocks Thu 02-Jan-14 13:38:25

I don't want to take mine down. It's not over.

grannyactivist Thu 02-Jan-14 13:19:59

Didn't put any up this year and took the cards down yesterday. One of my sons was NOT amused at the lack of festive cheer - even though we did put up a small tree in our Norwegian cabin.

hummingbird Thu 02-Jan-14 13:16:38

Mine all down, and house cleaned! It's funny, but as soon as Boxing Day is over, I think the decorations look sad and miserable, and I'm always longing to see the back of them. I'm reducing the number of them too, year on year. By the time I'm old (a very long way off, obviously!), I probably won't bother at all!

mamaa Thu 02-Jan-14 13:08:29

My cards were down by the 29th so that they made the recycling collection and I have just tidied away the last of the Christmas decs for another year. All is clean and tidy and I feel pleased! Like them when they 1st go up, get really sick of them by NYE and cant wait for them to be gone, and normailty restored!!

kittylester Thu 02-Jan-14 12:39:10

January 6th. That is twelfth night and it means they are still up for my birthday on the 5th. Though I do take down the cards or there wouldn't be room for the hundreds I get every year. grin

Anne58 Thu 02-Jan-14 12:32:37

I see HQ have done away with the Christmas emoticons already! Must mean that they have run out of sherry.

sunseeker Thu 02-Jan-14 10:55:44

Maggiemaybe you are not alone! We have some bright sunshine this morning and it is showing up all the dust and cobwebs!!

Maggiemaybe Thu 02-Jan-14 10:36:50

I found 3 of last year's Christmas cards behind my sofa when I moved it out to put up this year's decorations. It doesn't say a lot for my housekeeping skills.

Lona Thu 02-Jan-14 10:35:04

Still wearing the Christmas chocolate! blush

bikergran Thu 02-Jan-14 10:30:58

no wonder our lives move so fast!
