Following the success of The Older People in the Media Awards last year, we're delighted to be involved again this year.

As last year, there will be a special Gransnet award for the best older person's character in a film, TV or radio drama, chosen by gransnetters. (Last year, Anne Reid won for her role as Celia in Last Tango in Halifax). As last year, the character must have first appeared in the media between Thursday 15 August 2013 and Thursday 14 August 2014.

Full details on the page. You can also vote on all the other categories on the Independent Age website.

This is a really good way of generating discussion and shining a light on coverage that has either positively portrayed older people, or sensitively highlighted the issues they face.

Suggest nominations here. We'll have a chance to vote on a shortlist after the summer.

Nominations are now closed - thank you to everyone who has given their suggestions!

Brilliant! Was my choice smile

I never did see any announcement of the winner so just in case others also missed that, it went to Judi Dench for Philomena.
Apologies if everyone else knows but I couldn't track down the result on Gransnet.

My vote goes to the brilliant Sarah Lancashire for Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, even though she's at the lower end of "older".

Bet you didn't know Riverwalk that I am a svelte size 12 with long slim legs, a flat stomach and no wrinkles. hmm

Riverwalk Fri 03-Oct-14 14:45:36

Bet you didn't know NanKate that Baroness T is jings older sister wink

much older.

NanKate Fri 03-Oct-14 10:16:53

Yes Riverwalk you are right, but I was so impressed with her that I felt I wanted to mention an oldie who can still cut it at almost 92.

Voting has closed anyway.

Checked Sarah Lancashire's age. She'll be 50 this month. Her character in Happy Valley might have been much the same age. Wonder if 50 is 'older' ??

Riverwalk Fri 03-Oct-14 08:24:54

But the feisty Baroness isn't a character .... she's for real!

NanKate Fri 03-Oct-14 07:59:35

Baroness Jean Trumpington of the House of Lords and also codebreaker at Bletchley Park.

Saw her yesterday at Henley Literary Festival.

She talked for an hour with no notes and she is coming up for 92 - what a gal. smile

Tom Conti! Those eyes!

Babyboomer Thu 02-Oct-14 22:15:39

Anton Lesser. Such a lovely voice!

Coppernob Thu 25-Sep-14 19:31:57

It has to be Judi Dench.

NannyBarbara Tue 23-Sep-14 10:31:12

Judi Dench gets my vote!

purplehairstreak Sat 20-Sep-14 21:24:56

Judi Dench without a doubt

Izziwiz Fri 19-Sep-14 22:06:06

I am entranced by Roger allam, he is my vote.

bmteal Fri 19-Sep-14 19:35:57

Sarah Lancashire

Ana Fri 19-Sep-14 19:18:50

(Sorry - Roger Allam!)

Ana Fri 19-Sep-14 19:17:14

Richard Allam or Judy Dench.

I still think Sarah Lancashire's character was too young to be classified as 'older'. You can be a grandmother at any age over approximately 30...

mcem Fri 19-Sep-14 18:57:33

Sarah Lancashire - hard to believe she's old enough but she was a grandmother in Happy Valley.

kate1947 Fri 19-Sep-14 18:04:46

Judy Dench and Sarah Lancashire
