How to dress stand at bottom of Christmas tree?

I put ours in a cardboard box that I have covered in Christmas wrapping paper. It looks quite effective.

You can buy a 'skirt' with festive pattern on to cover the stand. They're readily available, saw some in pound land last year.

My real Christmas tree from last year is looking a bit sorry for itself - to put it mildly! So I'm thinking of getting an artificial one this year. But I hate the stands that they come on. Obviously on Christmas Day it'll be obscured by presents but in the meantime what can I do to make it look less...plastic?
