Mine was in 1968, Jesamine by the Casuals. Another was Everlasting Love by Love Affair. Loved the lead singer Steve Ellis.

I've posted this before, but when I was 14 my mum told me that her friend was buying a portable record player for her daughter, and what records did we think she should buy? My younger sister and I put our heads together, and came up with a list: Beatles EP with Fool on the Hill, Georgie Fame Bonnie and Clyde, something by Michael Jackson, and most importantly, The Monkees Daydream Believer. We were green with envy, but on Christmas morning, we were wakened by Davy Jones serenading us - it was our present! I still get tears in my eyes remembering our delight, and in gratitude to my lovely mum ?

I was given 2d to go to a jumble sale with my older siblings in 1967 and proudly bought 2 45's, Roses are Red by Bobby Vinton, b side was You and I. Also Mary's Boy Child, the b side was O Mio Babbino Caro! I have Roses are Red as my ringtone ?

Handynan All or Nothing was a bit before my time but I love that song. Steve Marriott was such a fantastic singer. Itchicoo Park was another favourite of mine.

All or Nothing by the Small Faces. First album (or LP as it was then!) was Rubber Soul - which was released 50 years ago this week. That makes me feel old! shock

My favourite Anthony Newley record was I`ve Waited So Long. Not too sure, but was that sung in Idle on Parade as well? It was definitely in a film.
My first LP was Elvis`s Blue Hawaii.

Ricky Valance. Can't remember the song.

I still play my Tony Newley cd with idle on parade on it. Loved him. Saw him on stage at Old Vic. Stop the World. Was so good.

feetlebaum Sat 05-Dec-15 22:31:19

PS: The song was called Idle on Parade...

feetlebaum Sat 05-Dec-15 22:27:46

'Trains and Boats and Planes' by can't remember who. Can and do still sing it while waiting for a train on Belfast Lough watching the Irish Sea crossing ferry passing and planes landing and taking off at Belfast City airport. Busy transport hub!

And then there was the Hard Day's Night EP. smile

nannieroz111 Sat 05-Dec-15 17:14:37

My first was Yesterday Man sung by Chris Andrews. Anyone remember him?

feetlebaum Sat 05-Dec-15 17:07:32

As already answered, my first record purchase was a 78rpm 'Jazzman' recording by Bunk Johnson, called Weary Blues. my second was yet again a 78, but a 12" one, of Largo al factotum from The Barber of Seville (Rossini) sung by Tito Gobbi.

When I was about 13 I joined a classical music club and bought LP's with my paper round money. I think among the first were Beethovens fifth and Djorvak's New World. I thing the first pop song was Billy Fury Halfway to Paradise.

Just One Look by the Hollies.

harrigran Sat 05-Dec-15 06:56:20

Nairobi sung by Tommy Steele. A girl across the street gave me her wind up gramophone when she got a brand new Dansette. I don't think the record lasted long, the '78s' broke easily in those days, and I had a toddler sister.

Sugar sugar by the Archies ( still love it to this day) smile

Jomarie Fri 04-Dec-15 22:23:34

As Tears Go By - Marianne Faithfull. Sad and soulful - still know all the words (chorus repeated numerous times always helps) grin

seagazer Fri 04-Dec-15 22:19:22

Oh I didn't know there was already a thread. Sorry. smile

seagazer Fri 04-Dec-15 22:13:09
