Blog?

Evening all, and every good wish to you.

A while ago, when I posted things that were received as funny/ humourous, a few members suggested that I might start a blog.

The awful incident where some "lovely" member printed off and posted a thread to my boss has somewhat shaken my confidence, but, hey, as Elton John wrote "I'm still standing" !

So, I don't seem to have much recent stuff worth using ?on here, is the old stuff worth using, ?

Hello, nasty person, you didn't manage to lose me my job, but yes, you managed to really upset me, so are you happy now?

Alima Sat 21-May-16 18:47:17

Hi Phoenix, not entirely sure what a blog is but if it is somewhere you, and others? could post humorous stuff I am all for it. GN does seem very serious sometimes, am up for having a laugh.

I find that generally blogs are not well received and often only get very few responses. Sometimes they seem very self indulgent , but ignore me I am going through a cynical phase.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 21-May-16 19:05:31

You sure you're in the right mood for this Phoenix?

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 21-May-16 19:06:11

Put it in a balloon and let it float away...

Ana Sat 21-May-16 19:10:56

I'm not sure how you could actually have a blog on Gransnet. Aren't they supposed to be ruminations/observations by just one person?

You'd get everyone putting in their three ha'pence!

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 21-May-16 19:12:49

The"blogs" on here are usually selling a book.

Just put it in 'Chat'.

Elegran Sat 21-May-16 19:24:59

Do you mean you'd like to have a site of your own with a blog on it? If you do, there are several websites which host blogs and give you templates to set one up. Blogspot is a free one. bloginstructions.blogspot.co.uk/

I reckon you would be very good at it - I may have told you so years ago.

annsixty Sat 21-May-16 19:35:04

I think what * jing* said was what I said in another way ,blogs are self indulgent and selling ones self.

Indinana Sat 21-May-16 19:44:24

I've come across many blogs which are self indulgent - people who just love to go on about their wonderful lives, often wrapping it up in a mock self-deprecating way so that everyone can respond by saying how wonderful they/their family/their lifestyle really is. And when I read the responses, the majority of them come from the blogger's family and from other bloggers. They just seem to be a bunch of bloggers living in a kind of parallel universe all showing off to each other like one big mutual admiration society hmm.
Wannabe authors comes to mind. Phoenix why not start gathering material for a book? Much more satisfying and not nearly so introverted. And I'm pretty sure you could do it. Think big, not small!

If you are thinking of doing anything permanent it must include Cursing the Gammon grin

kittylester Sat 21-May-16 20:57:34

I'd say go for it phoenix - your stuff is brilliant. I presume you meant separate from GN. And make sure you tell us about it so we can spread the word.

GandTea Sat 21-May-16 21:15:25

Yes go for it, publish and be dammed. smile

Jane10 Sat 21-May-16 22:25:24

A blog doesn't have to be about your life. Are you the person who used to write about your cat? Was it Oliver Sprout or am I mixing you up with someone else. Tom Cox must have made a fortune blogging/instagramming and writing his #mysadcat stuff. There's a massive interest in cats out there. Just saying. I PMd you re free blogsites. Go for it!

thatbags Sat 21-May-16 22:46:03

Blogs are for writing about anything you're interested in. There are political blogs, nature blogs, science blogs, farming blogs.... You name it. It's just somewhere to write stuff down and publish (or store) it. I started a blog because I had been writing a family newsletter using iPhoto technology (posting pics as well) but that became outdated so I migrated to Blogger. The audience (people who look at it and possibly read it) has broadened over the years without my doing anything to make that happen.

Some blogs, e.g. science ones, have guest writers who contribute specialist knowledge. They can be very informative. As can political ones, philosophical ones, and garden ones.

Getting responses isn't really the point.

Alea Sat 21-May-16 23:03:25

I'd forgotten about that particular bitchiness piece of nastiness. Did you ever identify the toe rag individual concerned?
I am very glad (s)he did not achieve their petty objective but it was a lesson to us all about how vulnerable we can be in the face of determined scheming. angry
Go with writing a blog, you have talent as a writer, a lightness of touch and a good sense of humour.
I for one will look forward to reading more!

Phoenix Go for it whether or not you call it a blog is irrelevant. Your observational humour on all sorts of things has made us laugh a lot in the past.

I need a good laugh every so often.

KatyK Sun 22-May-16 10:27:44

I have written a short blog. It wasn't about my 'wonderful life' because my life hasn't been wonderful. I hope it wasn't self indulgent or boastful. I had been through a difficult time and wrote the blog with a view to perhaps showing other people who were going through the same or similar that there can be light at the end of the tunnel. I was not selling a book or anything else. Gor for it!

phoenix Sun 22-May-16 11:26:27

Thanks for the responses, they are appreciated.

Yes, it is me who wrote various ramblings about my cats, Digby & Oliver Sprout! Deeda fancy remembering "Cursing the Gammon"!

I did mean a blog not connected with GN, I will give it some more thought and see how I get on.

KatyK Sun 22-May-16 12:00:01

Go not Gor blush

janeainsworth Sun 22-May-16 12:09:58

Phoenix Wordpress is very easy to use. There's a tutorial learn.wordpress.com/ If I can do it anyone can

Annsixty I know what you mean about some blogs being self indulgent, but they aren't all like that. I started mine as a way of communicating with friends and family when we were travelling, as lots of people had asked to be told how we were getting on. Like Bags Ive found that other people look at it and seem to enjoy it.

Go for it Phoenix - I'll 'follow' you smile

phoenix Sun 22-May-16 18:10:01

Thanks again, all!

My initial thoughts are not to have a theme, I.e. cats, travel incidents blush etc, but to keep it more general.

I could fill a file with my experiences of dealing with employment agencies, and some of the very odd people I had the misfortune to work for in my wilderness period of employment!
