My D D is wondering what names to use with her D D for her 'bits' . The proper anatomical names seem a bit much for a 2 year old. I know it sounds ridiculous but we can t remember what words we used to use. Any suggestions?

Should have written older boys at school. They do know the proper names they just think it's funny using alternative names.

When my 2 daughters were young we always referred to 'Mary' that's what my mum said to me. My granddaughter now saids Mary, but my 5 yr old grandson refers to his 'peanuts' a name he has picked up from the older. Lays at school.

winky and noon in mine.

when my daughter was small I told her it was a vagina (it was a long time ago) and she, being 2, made that Dinah. The mortification of the next few weeks when she became obsessed with the question "does that lady have a hairy Dinah?" of all women she saw - oh dear, I still blush.

5 year old DGS on the other hand, recently (at dinner, quite unabashedly) told my husband "I am being bothered by my penis. A lot. Does it happen to you?" Luckily DH rose to the occasion (pardon the pun!) grin

If boys have a Willy, should girls have a Wilma?

Peaseblossom Wed 01-Feb-17 19:24:43

Snowdrop gringringrin I agree!

Rowantree Wed 01-Feb-17 19:02:26

Chilren of a friend of mine referred to their genitals as 'my linky' which makes some kind of sense...

My DDs learned the proper words (though yes, admittedly it should have been 'vulva' and not 'vagina' - ) but that did lead to some embarrassing situations ....DD1, in the queue in Boots: 'MUMMY! My vagina itches!' and DD2 announcing on a bus journey that the rumbling bus engine made hers tickle.

One friend refers to 'down there'; my daughter's surgeon, a Lt-Col in the army, referred to 'your undercarriage' and I use 'fanny', 'miffy', 'lady garden' or whichever term I find most amusing in the circumstances!

It's always been a winkle and a willy in this house.

Ana Wed 01-Feb-17 18:48:30

But vagina isn't correct either, if you're referring to what children can see when they look at themselves!

Marianne1953 Wed 01-Feb-17 18:39:45

My children have always been told the correct names and I do the same with my Grandson. You wouldn't call a leg or an arm by a different name, why call a vagina or a penis something different.

Nanna58 Wed 01-Feb-17 17:37:11

Am henceforth going to refer to my 'bits' as my 5.3, as that is the size of the ring pessary providing the scaffolding after my recent prolapse!

Izabella Wed 01-Feb-17 17:32:10

Being around animals all the time we were used to the correct anatomical names and thought other children were silly using made up names (no offence it's just how we were brought up). Gestation, pregnancy and deliveries in the night in barns or the fields were normal things.

pollyperkins Wed 01-Feb-17 16:59:17

I actually thought it better at around 2 years to have an original name for the willie as my son was inclined to ask all sorts of random people if thy had one - jus out of interest.

Elrel Wed 01-Feb-17 16:57:36

Marydoll, well, yes, close call!

pollyperkins Wed 01-Feb-17 16:57:08

I agree Anna - vagina is the wrong term to use for external organs. If anything is correct it is vulva. But I and my DD always said front bottom!!!
My DGD at about 3, when in the bath with her brother once explained to me that boys have willies but girls have holes. My DiL was horrified and told me she hadn't taught her thet, shed just worked it out I think (ie where the wee comes from - not referring to the vagina!)

Penstemmon Wed 01-Feb-17 16:52:58

My DDs used vulva and penis as children. DGC all know the corret terms but adjust terminology when with friends!

However , on holiday on Mudeford beach DD1, in her shrill little 3 yr old voice shouted with excitement as we were collecting pebbles, 'Mummy this one is just like a penis' .. it was an approximation of the male member with testicles!

I have no idea what my parents told me..if anything! I remember the song, 'Keep you hand on your ha'penny' though!

Bellasnana Wed 01-Feb-17 16:50:17

DGD calls it her coochee. We've had this topic before.

Ana Wed 01-Feb-17 16:35:05

I agree with you, notanan, 'vulva' is the correct anatomical term and means the whole area that can be seen from the outside.

'Vagina' isn't right, because it's hidden inside the body and in a young child even the outer bit can't really be seen.

Marydoll Wed 01-Feb-17 16:34:19

My son used to call his penis his "Wee man". One day when he was about four my friend asked him to show her his wee man. She meant the small Lego man he was playing with, whilst he thought she was referring to his penis. He was horrified! I have learned from this and my GD will be learning the correct names.

They also giggle at the advert on TV for "My fairy garden" silly girls.
