What to call a grandfather?

Hello,
I've fairly recently found out I'm going to be a grandmother so I'm hoping to pop on here to ask all sorts of questions in the coming months from the wise and experienced! While I've decided to go with the name Nonnie (which was my grandmother's name) the new grandfather to be is still debating his. I've found quite a bit on the site about names for grandmothers, but not so much for grandfathers. Grandad is taken (other grandparents) and Grandpa makes him feel too old. What are your other halfs called? Or are there any grandfathers on the forums who could give me some ideas? Thank you!

Back to pram research - what an eye-opener!

The chances are the child will find heir own name. When my daughter was little she couldn't say grandpa, and called my dad " baba". He remained our beloved Baba till he died. They had a pet name for my mum too based on her surname and sh was this nam till she passed.

We are Gran and Grandad, dil's parents live in Lewis so they are Granny and Shen. Shen is Gaelic for Grandfather.

My husband is Poppa but my granddaughter calls him Mr Pop-Pop

Gaga and Papa here - initiated by our first grandchild and adopted by all following little ones. I don't see myself as 'Grannie' or 'Grandma' and definitely not 'Nanny' or 'Nana'. But each to their own....

We are Nonna and Grampy, I wanted Nana but DD thought it would confuse DGD as her other grandmother is Nanny. My ex refused to be anything but grandad despite there being another grandad, but our eldest DGD has sorted it out by referring to him as White Grandad due to his white/grey beard - she is not at all confused!

Our boys called their dad "pops". He is grandpops to our little grandson!

Love Moomin, Pay and Adda. I'm called Tatty to my three adult grandchildren and their boy/girlfriends. My ex husband is Grandad.

I am Nanny but my husband, who has a reasonably short christian name, is known as that, quite easy for my 2-year-old grandson to say and my hubby is very happy with this.

My husband is Grandad and the other grandad is Popsie

chrissyh Thu 27-Apr-17 11:09:49

Our grandchildren call DH Pa. Another suggestion is Pops, which is what friends children call their grandfather. I think it has to be a name that grandchildren will be happy to use when they're older.

My DH was Gramps, his choice . I'm Nanny although DGS often calls my Nanny Grapes as I often take him a box of black/red grapes when I see himgrin

My DM is Granny (no Great Granny for hergrin)

You may not have any choice! I was always going to be Granny and my husband Grandad (the others are Gran and Grandpa so no problem there) but my GD had others ideas for me and it stuck! I just love hearing whatever they call me but think I would have had to draw the line at Nanny (as I'm not Norland trained or a goat and I didn't like mine very much!!). Enjoy your DGC!

Nain and Teidy are the Welsh for gran and grandad, I am not Welsh my DIL is and oh I do love Tediy, it sums up all those twinkle eyed, well looked after Welsh grandads.

I don't know if it equates to Tidy in Anglish but so many nice grandads are just that.

My dad was Corky when he was a kid and Corky still at 87.

Our children had 2 lots of grandparents so they were Nanny Connie & Grandad Bill and Nanny Rhona & Grandad Peter. We are Nanny & Grandad to our grandchildren. DG1 other side are welsh so calls them Welsh equivelent. DG2 now has new step grandparents and calls them gran & Grandad.

Granny & Pappa

A friend's child mispronounced nanny as 'Nanon' and that has stuck with her, such that the great grandchildren use it and even I still refer to her with that name.
At the nursery where I work we had young twins who referred to their relative as 'white granddad' or 'black granddad' for obvious reasons!

Is it a good idea to plan these things and set your heart on a name for yourself, because when they have a go at saying it, a new name occurs which quite often is nicer, special and unique to you

Harebrain Thu 27-Apr-17 10:49:40

As has already been mentioned, whatever you decide, your little one will make their own variation when they start talking. Our first (we have 7) couldn't say 'grandpa' it came out as Bumpa! Naturally it has been taken up by all the others, golfing friends and everyone else! He even has the t-shirt! Enjoy, it is the best relationship ever!

mynana222 Thu 27-Apr-17 10:45:29

My daughter started calling my dad Grandpops and the name stuck

Teddy123 Thu 27-Apr-17 10:44:49

We just ran with the family tradition so it was Grandpa to my Grandma. My DGS often calls me Mummy by mistake .... So sweet.

meandashy Thu 27-Apr-17 10:40:40

My dgd called me 'Obama ' for about 2 yes as she couldn't say grandma! ?

HurdyGurdy Thu 27-Apr-17 10:37:47

Our granddaughter couldn't get her tongue around grand-dad, so my husband has always been Guggle!
