Yes, TK Maxx is your best bet. I know girls buy 'prom' ( another awful US import) dresses there and you can usually find some very tasteful ones at bargain prices.

Bought a whole wardrobe of clothes for a cruise on eBay then sold them on eBay afterwards. Would recommend it unless you are planning to wear the dress several times

Forgive me but have you looked in charity shops. And there are shops that recycle prom dresses in real life and on internet.

I have seen some fab gowns in charity shops recently, they are putting them on sale for the Christmas party season...worth a look and always a bargain!

Yes I agree, T K Maxx is good for this kind of dress. You can go online and see what they have, order it and collect it from your local branch and return it to them if you don’t like it.

Kaleidoscope online have beautiful evening and cocktail wear at reasonable prices. I got a fabulous ball gown for £55 from their website last year. Debenhams rails of reduced dresses have proved fruitful in the past.

Does it have to be an evening dress? What about a good quality pair of black trousers and team up with a sparkly top and some 'bling' jewellery. Lots available at this time of year. You may feel more comfortable in trousers and be able to ring the changes with different tops in the future dressing them 'up' or 'down' depending on the occasion.

I used to require to wear formal gowns pretty regularly. Rather than wearing the same couple all the time I tried renting and never looked back. Wonderful selections available at a reasonable (don't know current charges) price for a garment I really only wanted to wear the once. It certainly worked well for me. Good luck.

I agree with others, charity shop or borrow from a friend. Many of us have dressy clothes that we rarely wear and would be happy to lend to a friend. I've got lots that don't fit me now but I don't want to get rid of them "just in case"!

If it’s not something you’ll likely wear again Abbeygran, why not hire one? We did this once for a prom our younger daughter went to and she got a fabulous dress that we would never been able to afford. Better than having something sat in your wardrobe that won’t get worn again

Go online and Google Hire Evening wear . Lots of names pop up and many do a wide range of sizes etc. You could get something really snazzy for a snip of a price.

Sometimes Facebook offers a bargain, it's always worth looking there in your area.
