Hello, and good wishes to all.

This item came as part of an auction job lot bought by my mother. She had it for years, I've had it for years, without either of us having the faintest idea what it is!

It's made of brass, and as you can see could do with a clean blush

A letter box cover perhaps

What a mystery. I had a look on google images and found something similar, but can’t copy the image.
It was a trivet for putting a copper kettle by a fire, but it had longer legs.

My immediate thought was something to do with a fire- to hold in front and help it "draw"? or perhaps to stop heat from burning you while you do something through the slot? But then I wondered about a letter box cover. It's the right size.

?? it looks tiny in the pic.
Note to self 'must read every post'

Lisagran Mon 07-Jan-19 13:01:56

It’s 9 ins x 7 ins, though, Marmight

Letter box for a fairy's house....? ?‍♀️

If thtey seem to have been added, maybe someone converted it into a teapot-stand or pot-stand. That still doesn't clarify what it started off as.

It looks quite old and worn.

If it’s got little “feet” on the back, is it a stand for a hot pan / dish / plate? Could you have a candle under it, to maintain the heat of dish, etc?

I should imagine any well-established antiques dealer could tell you what it is.

phoenix Sun 06-Jan-19 18:35:19

It's got 4 sort of little "feet" on the back, but not entirely sure that they are original.

Missed a visit from Antiques Roadshow about 2 years ago sad

A modern version of BradfordLass72’s suggestion -

karenGalaxy Sun 06-Jan-19 02:12:43

Maybe a towel holder

Do you remember a TV programme which brought puzzling things in for people to solve? I think Frank Muir may have been on it.

I am fairly sure this (original picture) featured in one - or at least it looks like it.

When you are repairing chair seats with webbing, as they used to in the old days, you pull the webbing through this object, then brace it agaisnt the side of the seat, pulling to make the webbing taut, then hammering in the tacks before letting go and trimming the webbing.

Does that make sense?

It looks as though it should have another half with a hook or clasp to fit the loop. Or maybe it is part of a stirrup or tackle for a horse or a camel? WW1era.

The one on the left looks like Batman grin

Jalima1108 Sat 05-Jan-19 20:52:04

You could take it to the Antiques Road Show if it visits your area phoenix
but don't clean it!

Jalima1108 Sat 05-Jan-19 20:48:12

I think it's an embroidery square Lisagran - unembroidered by the look of it!

But still in good enough condition for you to attempt it?

Lisagran Sat 05-Jan-19 20:26:18

Hi-jacking your thread Phoenix (she said nervously) - anyone know what this is? About 9 inches square.

Luckygirl Sat 05-Jan-19 19:56:30

It does look like some sort of extruder. Not sure what for though.

phoenix Sat 05-Jan-19 19:50:47

Thanks, but still not identified!

Elegran Sat 05-Jan-19 19:32:24

The hole is, I mean, not the shape of the whole thing.

Elegran Sat 05-Jan-19 19:31:54

That one on the left is a similar shape.

phoenix Sat 05-Jan-19 18:56:17

Kateykrunch grin!!!

phoenix Sat 05-Jan-19 18:54:59

Not anything like it, are they Lisagran? But thank you for posting them.

Variations of brass polishing / uniform protection items here?
