Am I the only person who didn’t know posters could be Googled?
I must be very naive indeed .

I've just searched some usernames using the Bing search engine. Not one came up. That's why I never use Google.

I'm confused by this Merylstreep - if Google is the more efficient search engine, as Bing came up with none, why do you never use Google? confused

ananinous "GNHQ will prolly delete any posts that risk your privacy if you report them." That won't help - even deleting stuff from Gransnet doesn't delete it from Google's archive.

I googled my use name and just came up with places to visit etc. If I add my user name and gransnet on the end it comes up with several of my old posts . Although I am careful not to post names I will be even more careful in future

gransnet soops googled in images brings up the most.

The pages and pages of various grandchildren was a bit of a surprise!

Just why? I wonder if they have the parents' permission?

SparklyGrandma Wed 26-Feb-20 23:13:44

I googled and got pages and pages of one of the GN Games fora I post on.......

Bibbity Wed 26-Feb-20 23:06:32

Posts on a public forum won’t have anything to do with GDPR.

Urmstongran Wed 26-Feb-20 22:54:23

Luckily I’ve not posted any photos of the grandchildren or family members.

I’ve calmed down. I think I’d just forgotten ‘it’s out there’. Thank you for this thread - it’s a timely reminder to be more circumspect.

This could be a blessing in disguise.

ananimous Wed 26-Feb-20 22:41:25

...Or rejoin with a new name... I didn't read any that would dox you.

ananimous Wed 26-Feb-20 22:40:36

Report any that have privacy issues to GNHQ.

ananimous Wed 26-Feb-20 22:40:08

Calm down, check your posts before you get stressed.

Urmstongran Wed 26-Feb-20 22:37:48

I sort of knew. Then forgot.
?
I just googled ny user name without GN and loads of my posts came up.
Oh heck.
I feel like leaving.

I share but not names. I have in the past said ‘it’s my birthday today’. ‼️

ananimous Wed 26-Feb-20 22:21:50

Or just add some b******t to pad it out a bit -Ye olde trail of breadcrumbs.

ananimous Wed 26-Feb-20 22:20:33

GNHQ will prolly delete any posts that risk your privacy if you report them.

curvygran950 Wed 26-Feb-20 22:16:34

Anniezzz, maybe some of us haven’t been on the site for as long as you, so perhaps will not have seen the previous threads on this subject.
Whatever the case, I still think it’s worth repeating, if only as a reminder to keep private details private .

anniezzz09 Wed 26-Feb-20 21:45:00

Well then there's nothing to worry about, is there?

ananimous Wed 26-Feb-20 21:15:52

...And we will still see all of your GN posts, forever...

Ramblingrose22 Wed 26-Feb-20 21:09:44

I am definitely going to change my username after this to something less unusual!

The UK has long been committed to the creation of robust data protection laws and was, in fact, one of the principal architects of GDPR. As such, the UK has already agreed that GDPR will be absorbed into UK domestic law as part of the European (Withdrawal) Agreement. Once this happens, we will see both GDPR and the UK's existing Data Protection Act 2018 working in tandem to rule on data cases.

Oh for goodness sake, this comes up regularly. Those of us who've been on the site for a while know this perfectly well. Someone up thread has linked to where on GN it is made clear that posts may be reproduced elsewhere.

Look, it's long been the case that you can Google yourself and if you've worked as a professional or for a well known organisation, then you'll have a Google profile. It's also very easy to request Google to delete your data from their servers and searches. We have the EU I believe to thank for being able to do that.

No, not the only one, apparently.

anniezzz09 Wed 26-Feb-20 20:21:14

Yes, maybe the Internet is forever, depends on future cyber wars, dictatorships, software development, data collapse but beyond that, if our posts are anonymous and don't suggest location etc, who cares? As someone else pointed out, more information is easily available through other social media sites such as Facebook.

ananimous Wed 26-Feb-20 18:52:44

No probs.

The interweb is forever peeps, remember that.

curvygran950 Wed 26-Feb-20 18:49:09

ananimous , thanks for the link in your previous post.

Just a word to any doubters -I've just tried it for myself and Everything I've ever posted is there.
