I enjoy gransnet as a new member, but was wondering how old you all are. I became a gran for the first time at 59 (kids were late starters!) I wouldn't have been bothered with what family call my old lady forum then but now at 74 have more time on my hands and find it interesting.

What made you join

I am 72 and only a gran through marriage (i.e. the children of step-children). I have a congenital abnormality that means I cannot carry a baby to full term. Several miscarriages.

I am 76 and have 13 grandchildren ranging from 23 to 3 years old.
TANITH, how do you know where the other gransnetters live to get to know them?

Bernice123 Fri 03-Apr-20 17:38:11

I was 56 when my first granddaughter was born and joined gransnet shortly afterwards. I’m now 63 and Nana to my 3 adored grandchildren. I don’t contribute often to the forums but look forward everyday to reading the threads, which sometimes have me laughing out loud. A real tonic, especially in these difficult times.

I became a grandmother when I was 57. I have an almost 16 year old granddaughter and twin grandsons who recently had their 14th birthday.

pollyolly I didn’t know where they lived apart from the fact they were in my general area and someone posted about a meet-up in my area which is where I met the other Grans, we have been meeting once a month at a local cafe for probably 4 yrs now they are all lovely grans.
You could post suggesting a meet up in your local area.

Oh bye - pressed post too quickly blush.

I'm 68 and became a nana at 47. Now got seven of 'em, ranging from 3 to 21 wink.

FranT Fri 03-Apr-20 18:24:35

I'm 72, first GC at 47, again at 54, then 55, lastly at 59, joined when I retired, find it helpful since I was widowed 3 years ago.

I'm 60. I joined Gransnet because I was finding Mumsnet too young. At that point I wasn't a gran and, in fact, I still don't have a grandchild that is blood related but I have been "Gangan" to my daughter's partner's DD now for nearly three years and they got married last August so it now feels permanent and I'm allowing myself to believe that she and I will, indeed be part of each other's lives until I shuffle off! grin

MamaCaz Fri 03-Apr-20 18:46:48

I became a Grandma at 51.
For my generation, I was an early(ish) starter, becoming a mother in 1981 at the age of 21, but didn't become a Grandma for another thirty years.
It was my first dgc's mum who pointed me in the direction of Gransnet, so she has lot to answer for!

Joined about almost a year ago. I will be 75 in May on Empire Day!!! I share the day with Queen Victoria bless her. I have 8 grandchildren and 4 step grandchildren and 2 Great grandchildren. I was a grandmother at 44 and a great grandmother by that child in 2016! I love being a grandmother / GG but still don’t feel I’m old enough. Inside I feel 25!!! Haha

I was what I like to call an "elderly primate", having first child at 32, stillbirth at 34 and second child at 36. \So am now soon to be 76. One of the things I really appreciate about this forum is the very wide age span. As one ages, one tends to lose contact with young people, which makes it really hard to keep up to date with changes.

I was 69 when my first grandson was born. His dad was 43 both late starters !

Annaram1 Fri 03-Apr-20 19:04:23

64 - first grandchild at 54 - got 4 now 10, 9, 4 & 17 months.

glammagran Fri 03-Apr-20 19:21:38

Had mine at 19, 21 and 38. Became a Gran at 50 as older 2 were far more conventional waiting until marriages in their 30’s before becoming parents. Youngest though had her daughter a week after completing her masters degree at 24. Of them all, I would say she is the best mother though.

I’m 55 and became a granny for the first time 9 years ago. My latest DGD was born 4 weeks ago. I’m thankful I got to have a cuddle before my daughter self isolated due to her asthma.

Gwenisgreat1 Fri 03-Apr-20 20:19:51

I was 69 when I first became a Granny to a little boy who has Down Syndrome ( a little mischief), about then I joined Gransnet. When I was 72 my other DD gave birth to my GD who has just turned 4
