How do I share reading a book with GS online?

I know a little girl who is reluctant to read every day as she is supposed to, so I've offered to whatsap and get her to read to me. I won't have a book to follow but hope we can manage. Will be starting with The Twits on Thursday and I'm really looking forward to it.

I've been using Caribu with my 2 & 4 yo grands, but for the most part the stories are insipid. We mostly use the coloring function. Readeo is said to have much better stories available, so I may spring for that. Meantime, I use FaceTime as others have said.

I have used What's App for ages I have a small bendy tripod (think its a gorilla) that I set up over the book holding my phone, works a treat for my SueTube videos I send them. I can also see their reactions and chat as we go. Good if you've got a dear grandson like mine who sometimes strays into a different time zone!

If you can stretch to another machine the Portal which uses Facebook/Whats App is brilliant for children as it has built in stories for both parties to see and, eg turns the child into the characters in the story. It also has effects so the child can put frogs on their heads, change their voices etc. Unfortunately it works best when you both have a portal which cost about £170 each for the cheapest one!

I’ve just seen Readeo.... looks interesting.

We are using Face Time to home school our two DGS and it is working really. DD emails the work to us and then we work through it with the boys. We do around two hours each morning and I am sure they are making good progress probably more than in school as they are getting one to one teaching.

chorlton and the wheelies- has it been 'remade' modern? I watched it years ago when my AC were little.. They've remade so many things now, in 'modern' versions but my AC say theyve spoiled them

I never thought of reading to my GC - what a good idea. Main problem is GD, she's 4 and knows there is a 'bug' causing problems - she wont speak to me on Facetime in case she gets the bug!!

If you have WhatsApp I find that works a treat for reading stories. You need the children's book though .
I set the screen so the child can see the pages and I either read it off the screen or , if the book is big enough , off the page
I read almost daily to my 2 3 year old granddaughters.... one in Edinburgh and one down South.
We read some short books but also some quite long stories now the older child has better concentration span.
They both ring and ask for a story and are very attentive
It usually gives their busy parents a few minutes respite too .

I use Caribu with my 6 year old granddaughter, we sometimes spend an hour or so reading, colouring in and just chatting about the activity we are doing, the choice of books is a bit American, and there are lots that are for a young age group, may try those with the 2 year olds soon. In the past we ordered the same books from Book Depository (free worldwide postage) and read those together on Skype. I have a friend who plays hide and seek on Skype - her DD has the ipad and hides somewhere in the house 'with Nanny' and the children race around searching for them! Apparently causes much hilarity!

I use Zoom with grandchildren. Either I have the book and hold it up to show and then read or I have it in kindle form and use read from amazon and share on zoom.

YOu buy the book, open it in read and then the share function on Zoom lets grandchild see which ever application you choose from those you have open. It can be a white board or the read/book or even a you tube video or song. I also watched Chorley and the Wheelies with them.

Thank you for the link to Caribou, it looks very promising so have downloaded and sent invite to daughter. My grandsons are 4.5 and 18months and have read stories and made cookies but this does look helpful?

I use watsap to read a chapter each day. The child has same book and can follow my words on her page.

You can also borrow books online from your library, through the Libby app, then on zoom share your screen with your grandson. He can ask for control of the screen and so be able to turn the pages himself.

I've just ordered two copies if the same book, one for my DGD and one for me. When they arrive, I hope to be able to read it to her (and with her) over FaceTime. We'll see!

I use FaceTime, turn the camera away from me and show GS the pictures while I peer round the iPad to read the words. I read GS’s (4) bedtime story to him every night like this.
Alternatively you could both have copies of the same book.

I thought there was some sort of programme that actually shows the book on both screens an lets you read it but they can also turn the pages and read it at the same time?
