Amazon asking for date of birth

DH and I have Amazon deliveries all the time. Parcels are often left outside our door or in the reception and they don’t even ring the bell. Today’s delivery man said he needed my date of birth for confirmation of deliver. I told him I wasn’t giving him my date of birth and that Amazon don’t know my date of birth anyway so it wouldn’t confirm anything. I offered to sign for the delivery but no, nothing other that me giving him my date of birth would do. If I did not provide the information he would take the packages away. After much discussion we said take them then which he did.
The items ordered were a bathmat and some hand wipes, not exactly contraband.
Has anyone else been asked for their date of birth when taking delivery of an Amazon order ?

I had a delivery from Moonpig. It was a bottle of wine and a card. Wasn’t asked id or D.OB. And it was alcohol.

I have recently been asked for my DOB by an Amazon delivery man. I queried why and he explained certain goods, such as blades of any description, have to be given to people over 21.Our parcel contained a tool set so it seemed reasonable to me so I gave my DOB. No harm has come from doing this. (He was kind enough to tell me that I was obviously over 21 but he had to ask for my DOB anyway, oh dear, I no longer look youthful, lol).

See Amazon's age restriction rules here:

Do they think you're going to sit there sucking the alcohol out of the wipes??!! I can think of easier ways to get merry.

Regarding delivery drivers taking a picture, perhaps they have had previous people claiming they haven’t received deliveries and are taking pictures as evidence to cover their backs. It wouldn’t look good on their employment record To have a number of claims of undelivered or wrongly delivered parcels or there may even be some sort of penalty system which affects their pay so I can see why they might feel they need some sort of evidence of delivery. This is just speculation and it would be much better if the drivers in question asked for permission and explained why they are doing it. I’m just trying to see things from both sides and I can see why people would want to safeguard their jobs in the current situation.

If a courier delivers an item which, in 'normal' times you would have to sign for, instead they take a photograph in order to confirm the delivery.

Amazon delivery man is photoing my front door as proof he has handed parcel in.

I’d make up a daft date like 1842. When surveys ask me my occupation, I always say tap-dancer. I like to be as ridiculous as they are.

No not been asked either. They've all taken photo of house number!

I had a large bag of compost delivered a couple of months ago and the driver insisted on taking my photo with the compost beside me. I thought it was most strange and cannot see the point of it. It's never happened before or since.

May I add that I’ve had quite few automated phon calls saying they are from Amazon , they say that I owe them £79 for unpaid yearly delivery and that unless I press ‘ 1 ‘. then they will suspend my account ....I do not have an account direct with Amazon as I pay on my own pay pal account ....so please be extra careful, lots scammers about ...

Dibbydod Wed 22-Jul-20 10:11:13

I’ve never been asked for my DOB with Amazon or any other parcel deliver company , and if I were I would refuse , not because I wouldn’t want then to know my age , as someone suggested on here , but it’s certainly not appropriate and sounds very suspicious . I would phone Amazon to say what happened , they would know the carrier who brought your parcel . With all the scams that are going on these days , you can’t be too careful.

BusterTank Wed 22-Jul-20 10:06:26

I was asked for proof of my identity and only a passport or driving license would do . The parcel contained razor blades but I have never been asked since .

This happened to me when my dh ordered a new corkscrew.

steves2907 Wed 22-Jul-20 09:59:31

I would have given him any old date that closely matched my age!

Petalpop Wed 22-Jul-20 09:57:48

Glad you got it sorted. I am with you on that one I don't care if people know my age but would never give my date of birth to a person delivering because as was said above they have your name and address and if they get your dob who knows what could happen. Of course it is different if it is alcohol or anything age specific that is a different matter.

Grannynannywanny Wed 22-Jul-20 09:57:37

In recent times if I have delivery from Amazon I thank them from the window and ask them just to leave it at doorstep and I’ll be out in a minute.

Last week the driver said he needed to take a photo of the door. I said that’s fine. But then he said he had to take a photo of the door partially opened. Presumably to prove someone was at home when he delivered.

elleks Wed 22-Jul-20 09:57:09

I get Laithwaites deliveries, and they never ask for my DOB.

BlueSky Wed 22-Jul-20 09:57:01

No Gilly it's not so much for people to gasp at my date of birth, but mainly for the risk of identity theft!

Authoress Wed 22-Jul-20 09:55:21

I regularly buy whisky from Amazon, they need my DoB for that, despite my hair colour! It is part of their regular handover script for anything that is age sensitive. But for a bathmat and hand wipes?! The mind boggles.

Peewitt52 Wed 22-Jul-20 09:53:28

Were the hand wipes alcohol based? If so, maybe Amazon’s IT system picked it up as a delivery of alcohol.

LuckyFour Wed 22-Jul-20 09:53:22

Amazon can't be trusted. I never buy from them.

polnan Wed 22-Jul-20 09:53:03

Pound shops?? what are they? nothing like that round here..

Grandmabeach Wed 22-Jul-20 09:52:27

It is not being lazy Rene72. Many of us are still self isolating and don't want to risk catching anything. Many people do not live close to shops. Why get the car out and drive a distance of several miles searching for something needed urgently when Amazon can delver it the next day.
