Do you wash cleaning cloths with normal laundry?

I always have. Everything goes in dirty, comes out clean is my thinking. But my daughter's just been round and saw me put a wash on and is apparently horrified. She puts a separate hot wash on for cleaning cloths. Am happy with the way I do it so not planning on changing but still curious as to what others do.

Ah, I see.

That sounds great, apart from going into a basement..

Ah, well - they just get chucked in a basket. I spread them out a bit so they can dry a little before the next ones go on top. I have a laundry room in the basement (sort of standard here in Germany) so the unsightly dirty cloths are not on general view.

I bleach my dish cloths. Tea towels go in with normal white or light coloured clothes and dusters etc go in with dark towels or dark washing. I also use colour catchers in my washing too depending on if I need to use one. My washing machine is set on 40 degrees constantly.

Where do you keep the dirty ones for a couple of weeks?

JackyB Sat 19-Sept-20 21:55:00

Crikey - I have a basket full of cleaning cloths - use about 2-3 per day and wash them at 90° every couple of weeks. Wouldn't dream of washing them together with clothes and certainly not with towels, dishcloths or teatowels. Shudder at the thought!

I hang my ragged floor cloths made of old bath or beach towels on the line. I am proud of them as some are decades old and remind me of times that are gone.

Wham sold or sells a long handled scrubbing brush with short bristles that grab hold of cloths . I throw down some hot water with a little bleach then place the scrubbing brush on old ragged bath towel or beach towel. I push it in front of me , backwards and forwards, length after length, and sometimes walking in gentle curves. When too wet, changing to a clean old towel .The towels are so ragged they dry quickly outdoors.

I just soak mine in bleach for an hour. Clean as a whistle!

Very clean sisters!! thank you for making me smile!

Ps never use fabric conditioner for swimwear/man made fabrics/elastane eg in underwear/leggings etc as it wrecks them

Mamma7 Sat 19-Sept-20 20:24:26

I bleach my thin sponge dishcloths regularly, but use kitchen roll for most things where I can. Tea towels go in hot wash with washing machine disinfectant.

I use a fresh one every day and soak the used ones in very dilute bleach, then wash them all at the same time. Depends on the variety of cloth what they go in with - those that shed lint only go in with bedding, those that don't can go in with clothes.
I think that once excess dirt in rinsed off then any washing can go in together (colour sorting aside)
Reading the thread I've been amazed at how many people with the futures of young relatives to consider just throw stuff away

PamelaJ1 Sat 19-Sept-20 18:05:48

Mine are white, makes life easy. Well actually sometimes they a a colour that I would term mucky.?

welbeck Sat 19-Sept-20 17:15:34

two people mentioned washing underwear at 60 centi.
does not the elastic perish at high temps ?
i use 20, or 30 c., mainly because it's quicker,
about 45 mins short wash, reduced load,
and seems safer for the clothes.
i do add disinfectant to every load.
used to use 40 when i went to laundrette.
cleaning items are thrown away.

Granless Sat 19-Sept-20 16:52:12

No, certainly not. You might find the fluff off yellow dusters attaches itself to clothes especially dark ones.

Greciangirl Sat 19-Sept-20 16:42:56

Soak in bleach.
Tea towels go in with sheets and towels.

Who on earth in their right mind uses a 90c wash?

The element would burn out at that temperature.

I am having a Victor Meldrew moment.

rowyn Sat 19-Sept-20 16:24:50

They go in with a clothes etc wash. Still alive in my 70s.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Sat 19-Sept-20 15:47:10

Most things go in together. If a cloth is particularly dirty (after cleaning the car for instance) then it gets washed separately in a bucket by hand.
Surely most of us don't own enough cleaning cloths for them to go in the washing machine to make up a full load? Unless you're Lady Something with a large stately home to run.

My daughter swears by microwaving a damp cloth for 2 minutes Apparently it kills 99.9% of germs. I tend to bleach mine though.

Theoddbird Sat 19-Sept-20 15:33:11

Having read this whole thread I have decided that it sounds like a 'who washes in hottest water contest or 'who uses the most bleach' contest. You all have too much time on your hands... I have duck calling me...think I will go give them a tasty treat. Enjoy your afternoon ladies x

Tickledpink Sat 19-Sept-20 15:20:42

T towels go in with the main wash. Dishcloths boiled on the hob with soda crystals usually twice and then bleached.

MawB2 Sat 19-Sept-20 15:10:57

Of course, duh!

lemongrove Sat 19-Sept-20 14:58:11

With colour co-ordinated pegs I expect?

MawB2 Sat 19-Sept-20 14:54:40

When I hang them out of course I have to hang them in colour order.

lemongrove Sat 19-Sept-20 14:53:28

Oh surely Callistemon ?
