Useless skills we are secretly proud of

Morning everyone! flowers
I wanted to start Monday with something positive, so lets talk about cool skills we have that are actually pretty useless. Mine would be a nice handwriting while I don't write anything much and also I know Latin grammar by heart. Not that I can find a chance to use it. What about you?

Lucca Mon 21-Sept-20 15:26:46

By the way I thought this thread was about useless skills? Is there such a thing though ?

The number on an old £5 note from the 60’s.... I bet my then boyfriend I could remember it ( I hate losing a bet!) if I practised it enough like you do with the alphabet.. and that’s 26 letters!

I can recall most of the most popular hymns I have sung since I was a child and don’t need my hymnal very often. I also can follow the prayers of the old prayer book without reading them...just practice from school days and church attendance. But only useful to me. Latin is useful because so many Word derivatives are from Latin. My children are surprised that I know more than most women of 86 about doing stuff on computers but that is because I depend on them so much now that I am not at home in London. I love this thread away from the current problems of the dreaded virus.

I have several hobbies that take up space so when I expect visitors and have to have a clear up, I am very good at putting "stuff" that won't go anywhere. into various nooks and crannies, so they are unseen. Nothing so basic as piling it on chairs under the table - I am creative. The skill I need to learn is finding them again afterwards.

I can recite Gray’s Elegy, I can bend my tongue and I can make a good likeness of Paddy from Emmerdale by bending my knee and putting my glasses on it.

AGAA4 Mon 21-Sept-20 16:06:12

I can add up rows and rows of numbers without a calculator.
I have also trained myself not to see jobs that need doing.

Granless Mon 21-Sept-20 16:12:37

I’m a good listener - been told this by many.

Granless Mon 21-Sept-20 16:14:07

...... that’s why I don’t post often and, if I do, don’t say much ... just take it all onboard.

I can Belly Dance but very much doubt anyone would be interested in seeing me do it now! I still have the outfits and amuse myself by having an occasional dance in private.

FarawayGran Mon 21-Sept-20 17:01:16

MelloYellow
I would love to see you do that!
Does that mean a 'bobble effect'

JackyB Mon 21-Sept-20 17:12:49

I can sight read music pretty well. Singing and on the piano. Unfortunately I don't have perfect pitch, but I can usually find fairly close to A.

Grandmafrench Mon 21-Sept-20 17:47:58

I can hula hoop (grow up!)
I can write well with both hands (but use a keyboard mostly)
I am able to soothe screaming babies (skills no longer needed)
I can pick up things with my toes (not in public but useful still).

I can recite the Pepsi advert from the 70's

Now THATS a useless skill but nevertheless I am proud of it

Nannyjulesrules Mon 21-Sept-20 19:11:58

Me too, Lettuce! I have stuff (hobbies)everywhere, much to my OH's disgust. I used to put everything away properly when my DGGs were younger, but now I can't be bothered. They're old enough not to touch things and it doesn't bother them anyway! I think there's an art in shoving stuff into lots of hidey-holes, and great fun trying to find it later!
I don't mind darning, I still have my mum's old wooden darning mushroom, DGGs never seen one before.
I can count to 100 in French and Italian, comes in handy if you're having something done in hospital, like an MRI scan or an op with a local anaesthetic!

I have an appalling memory for faces and names. I can, however, sing without a mistake the alto part (and sometimes the tenor, too) for every piece of choral music I have learned over many years.
I also have a talent for falling down without hurting myself, which is, I suppose, quite useful. A result of my judo training, which finished in 1965 when I started my family. I don’t often fall, but ‘relax into it’ on the odd occasion when I have done so.

phoenix Mon 21-Sept-20 19:46:53

I can sing "How much is that doggie in the window" backwards ,in a decent contralto!
blush

Marydoll Mon 21-Sept-20 20:13:34

Nannyjulesrules, snap! I do exactly the same as you when having scans. I also try it backwards. wink. Not so skilled at that. ?

dogsmother Mon 21-Sept-20 20:29:50

Another Whistler here, love an opportunity to stick my fingers in my mouth but doesn’t always come out well though!

TheFrugalPiggy Mon 21-Sept-20 20:35:08

I seem to have an "amazing" memory for people's names and facts about them.
I can also sing lots of songs from the 1930s and 40s as I was raised by my grandmother who loved film and music.
I can also rap pretty well - as in hip-hop.

Happysexagenarian Mon 21-Sept-20 20:53:45

I can twitch my nose really fast. Our children and grandchildren think it's hilarious. They say I look like a rabbit!

lovingit Mon 21-Sept-20 23:04:16

I can spend hours doing absolutely nothing.
A very useful useless skill in this mad world we are in.

TillyWhiz Mon 21-Sept-20 23:07:49

I can blow on a grass stalk between my thumbs and get a VERY loud noise.

narrowboatnan Tue 22-Sept-20 11:17:13

I can bend over and touch my toes without bending my knees.

I can touch type at what my DH says is 90 mph whilst looking at him when he’s speaking to me - and get 100% accuracy.

I ‘skill’ (if it can be called that) that I would like to regain is the ability to skip. I bought a skipping rope with the idea of burning off a few calories but then found that I’d lost the ability to jump! My feet firmly refused to leave the ground together ?

narrowboatnan Tue 22-Sept-20 11:24:48

A skill, not I skill. Doh!

Grandmafrench Tue 22-Sept-20 11:26:01

First two - absolutely SNAP, narrowboatman (and I've been tested) - but are they useless skills, I wonder?
