AIBU I cannot believe this. The royal train costs a fortune. The only good this will do is bolster the RF. The number of folk in dire straits is unbelievable-how on earth will a visit from this pampered pair help I wonder?

Anniebach Wed 09-Dec-20 22:52:34

Harry will not come back, Meg wants to get involved in politics

merlotgran Wed 09-Dec-20 22:55:23

Thanks, Elianne. I'd forgotten all about that.

nadateturbei Wed 09-Dec-20 23:11:48

Good response Grany.

Well done William and Kate you’re doing a great job.

Lexisgranny Wed 09-Dec-20 23:37:31

There appear to be several definitions of Working Royals, for example if it is those who undertake engagements on behalf of the Queen, it would not include her granddaughters, ( though they currently do not undertake official engagements) but would include some of her cousins. If it is the Queens direct descendants the cousins are not included. Then of course there is the way Charles sees it. Although it is very doubtful that Harry and Meghan will return on any official footing,I think we must wait until we have official confirmation of this, and even then I don’t think Harry will renounce his and Archie’s position in the line of succession. The whole thing is a minefield, which more than likely, in the future, Charles will have to sort out.

Anniebach as it stands at the moment do we assume the eight to which you are referring consists of The Queen, The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Anne and the Earl and Countess of Wessex, with others put into retirement?

trisher

Think how many people could be made happy if the money expended on this trip had been used to give a christmas meal and gift to all the children living in poverty in the UK and how many more smiles there would be.

trisher well Said

I've always never been a fan of the Commonwealth because of the royal connection. However this video has been very informative.

Anniebach Thu 10-Dec-20 10:25:04

Lexisgranny yes the 8 I referred to are those you listed.

I know there are the Kents who are in their eighties , are patrons of some charities and live in grace and favour properties.

Charles stopped his siblings children from carrying out royal
duties but I don’t think he would do this to the Kents.

So easy to forget this family are just that , a family , a close family and the Kents and Gloucesters were at one time working royals when the Queen was so young .

Callistemon Thu 10-Dec-20 10:52:06

The Duke of Kent was still carrying out duties not that long ago and may still be doing so.

Nine pages of (mostly) complaints about William and Kate! In my view they are doing a good job .... a couple doing their best.

Parsley3 Thu 10-Dec-20 11:10:59

Once my voluntary work starts up again I am going to refer to it as “carrying out my duties”. That sounds so much better than just filling in my time.

trisher Thu 10-Dec-20 11:12:22

Anniebach

trisher you called Kate a 1950’s housewife , why is this acceptable but criticism of Megan you condemn ?

I did Annie but not on this thread. Although looking at her trailing round in W's wake-suitably dressed of course-well it reminds me of something (sorry I'm doing what I said this thread wasn't)

Not complaints about William and Kate! Discussion of royal family role in 21st century for the most part. Can’t think of one complaint of them as people tbh,

Anniebach Thu 10-Dec-20 11:18:15

The royal family are people

"My paramedic sister was at the funeral of a colleague who died with Covid - while the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge came to visit their hospital." This caller told Tom Swarbrick that Wills & Kate's Scotland visit simply shouldn't have happened.

you know the royals are making an arse of themselves when even the tories refuse to gush.
@jessicaelgot

Also, in an extraordinary development, Downing St is refusing to back William and Kate's tour of the country, which has raised eyebrows. Repeatedly asked if it was Covid compliant or backed by PM, the spokesman would only say it was "a matter for the Palace."

trisher Thu 10-Dec-20 11:28:38

Well that says something I thought we had a Constitutional Monarchy where the government decided things and told the monarch what they could do. It seems not. What next I wonder? An uprising in the Home Counties?

Alegrias2 Thu 10-Dec-20 11:52:37

Any criticism of a constitutional monarchy is seen by some as criticism of the characters and personalities who are currently in the senior positions in that set-up. So, the conversation is diverted off track and can't carry on.

I have quite a soft spot for Princess Anne. She once almost ran me over with her Land Rover at a rugby match, but that's another story. But, I don't light up with joy when I see her.

On the topic of working Royals. If we had an elected President, that person would not need other people from his/her family to support them in their work of turning up and representing the people of this country at whatever event was on the agenda that day. The President of Ireland doesn't have 8 members of his family who turn out when he's not able to.

Alegrias2 Thu 10-Dec-20 12:39:01

I know I shouldn't but....Soylent Green anyone???

Calendargirl Thu 10-Dec-20 12:56:09

Am reading ‘Diary of an MP’s Wife’ by Sasha Swire. Really good book. She says when her husband was knighted, the recipients of awards tried to find out which member of the RF would be doing the deed. Apparently if it was going to be Princess Anne, many of them tried to get their day changed, which I thought was awful.

Poor PA. Why not her?

Anniebach Thu 10-Dec-20 13:07:08

The president of Ireland was a labour politician and is not
head of the Commonwealth

Alegrias2 Thu 10-Dec-20 13:15:32

So, we could have a head of state for the UK and a head of the commonwealth. Doesn't have to be the same person.

We could elect anyone we liked to be president. We could even elect Prince William if we fancied it. I'd go for Jocelyn Bell-Burnell if I got the choice.

Anniebach Thu 10-Dec-20 13:31:03

No, we could only vote for whoever stood for president.
