I've just done mine online - I really don't remember the last one, presumably 10 years' ago.

I've hedged my bets. Filled it all in and saved it, all ready to submit on the 21st. Just in case..... smile

That’s a good idea - should have realised you could save it

Done it. Time consuming, inappropriate questions And intrusive. ( I think a lot of people will have told them what they want to hear)

suziewoozie Tue 09-Mar-21 16:47:10

The govt says you can fill it in early as long as you’re sure the composition of your household won’t change before 21 March. If it changes and you’ve filled it in, you have to tell them. I’m just going to wait until the date( and not tempt fate)

LullyDully Tue 09-Mar-21 16:42:11

I thought the point was to complete it on 21st March so the records know exactly who was where on that date. Am I missing something here?

Urmstongran Tue 09-Mar-21 16:38:57

Himself did ours earlier. For some strange reason he looked horrified when I said ‘No Religion’.

Does this man even know me?
?

Smileless2012 Tue 09-Mar-21 15:49:21

We've done ours. Mr. S. asked if me what gender I was born with and if I still identify with that gender and if English is my first languageshock

The man's living on borrowed time but I'll have to wait until after the 21stgrin.

Bluebell: If you haven’t yet received your access code by post you can still complete the form online. Go to the website:-

census.gov.uk/

and follow the instructions and you’ll receive the code by text. I found it very straightforward and easy to follow.

I'm 51 and my husband is 55 (and disabled) - no idea why they were interested in our childhood education! Still, at least this is being run by the Office for National Statistics - the last census in 2011 was being run by Lockheed Martin (an American company selected by the previous Labour government). I refused to complete that one on principle - it was subject to American privacy laws, rather than our own stricter EU privacy laws at the time. I completed the census today - easy enough but still bemused about them asking about 30+ year old qualifications shrugs.

None of us until next year in Scotland . I have made great use of these documents while doing my family research so look forward to filling ours in .

Direne3 Tue 09-Mar-21 11:18:47

I've completed and under the assumption that I will be able to amend details by re-entering the access code in event of any change. I too found it somewhat invasive. I'm a little concerned for anyone for whom English is not first language who may well not have understood what they were receiving despite the 'phone free helpline' advice (written in English only) and envisage some problems there after the event.

olliebeak Tue 09-Mar-21 10:47:13

NO - because the instructions are to fill it in on 21st March! If somebody, by any chance, is 'away from home on 21st March' (for whatever reason - ie hospital, prison) then you will have given false information. That would result in somebody being counted TWICE, as all institutions (hospitals, prisons, hostels etc) will be doing them on the correct day.

I do a lot of Genealogy and I LOVE it when previous Censuses are released for public knowledge.

In the past I've found a female ancestor in Prison aged 19 in 1851 and another ancestor in a Workhouse aged 50 in 1901. I am now looking forward to when 'The Next Chapter' is released for 1921 - which will probably be sometime next year!

EllanVannin Tue 09-Mar-21 09:54:05

Did mine online last night and received an acknowledgement.

henetha Tue 09-Mar-21 09:37:10

I've now received mine in the post but shan't fill it out until the 21st as I'm very old and might drop dead before then.

@Frogs - I agree with you about the potential for the census servers to crash if millions of people go online to complete this on the 21st. I posted about this upthread.

@Sarnia - I also posted this upthread ...

census.gov.uk/help/getting-started ... states:

Census Day is Sunday 21 March 2021.

You can complete your census as soon as you receive your letter, but make sure you answer about your household as you expect it to be on Census Day. If you complete your census early, and something changes, you can let us know.

Frogs Tue 09-Mar-21 08:55:18

The site will crash if everyone in the UK tries to fill the form out on 21st. I’m ok to do this on line but my husband wouldn’t have a clue - we’re both in our 70s and have been sent an access code not a paper form. You’d have thought they’d have sent out both so people would have a choice.
Am thinking some households won’t bother at all even though they say it’s the law.

M0nica Tue 09-Mar-21 08:44:16

I haven't looked at the Census yet, so have not seen the questions, but following Hymnbooks queries, past information informs the present. Your occupation when working can be an indicator of future possible medical problems and the type of medical and care facilitiesand housing needed in the future.

Sarnia Tue 09-Mar-21 08:39:28

I will complete mine following the clear instructions on my letter to 'complete the census on * Sunday 21 March 2021* or as soon as possible after.'
What do so many posters on here not understand about those few words?
It's almost like a competition as who can be first.

Grandma70s Tue 09-Mar-21 08:06:16

Hymnbook I was also puzzled by the persistent questions about employment. It’s a lot longer than eleven years since I was in a paid job.

BlueBelle Tue 09-Mar-21 08:00:31

I still haven’t had one are they still going out or have I been missed all my friends have one

Ladyleftfieldlover Tue 09-Mar-21 07:58:30

Mine arrived the other day and I will complete it on 21 March 2021.

alig99 Tue 09-Mar-21 07:49:19

I haven't seen the census yet but as people have mentioned a question about central heating i would hazard a guess that this might be related to the fact that the UK has committed get rid of boilers run on Gas by 2030. It would be helpful to policy and planners to know this information to getting rid of them and what will replace them, particularly if incentives might have to be considered and to calculate the costs. The census is all about the future in planning and policy making and associated cost.

Hellogirl1 Mon 08-Mar-21 23:46:44

Mine arrived today, will fill it in on the 21st

Hymnbook Mon 08-Mar-21 23:38:41

I couldn't see the point of questions about jobs and employment when I've been retired nearly eleven years! What does it matter to anyone what job l did 11 years ago. I don't know which person to be polite put this census questionnaire together but the questions asked didn't seem to make sense if the point of the census is to show aspects of how we live today to make a plan for the future.

MiniMoon Mon 08-Mar-21 22:08:43

Did ours today.
