Is Gogglebox scripted?

I love watching Gogglebox, but I do wonder whether it is scripted or whether it’s the actual opinions of the families featured. I was watching it last night and obviously THE Interview with Harry and Meghan was featured. All of the families/couples seemed to think that Harry & Meghan were in the right and had a genuine axe to grind over their treatment by the Royals. Which lead me to wonder whether the families/couples were told to side with H&M. Not sure whether I’m being rather cynical, but I can’t help wondering. What do you think?

No idea, but they haven't got much between their ears. I don't watch it.

BlueBelle Sat 13-Mar-21 18:41:09

Well a lot of us do think that

Jaxjacky Sat 13-Mar-21 18:45:51

I don’t know honeyrose but it was only a snapshot of them watching it, their conclusions may have been different after the whole thing.
I love Googlebox, makes me lol.

How do you know if you don’t watch it ?
The Siddiqis for one are very intelligent !

I don’t suppose it’s scripted, but it’s probably edited.

I don't really know if it is scripted but I imagine some guidance is given.

From what I have been told by friends who have appeared on various shows, I think guidance is usually given.

Blind Date with Cilla Black comes to mind - a man I worked with went on the show and he said everything was not completely off the cuff. Guidance was given and it was not filmed entirely in one take.

This is only what I've been told. I have no real experience.

lemsip Sat 13-Mar-21 19:29:40

yes, I believe guidance is given. ...Loads apply to go on it so they don't take just anybody .

EllanVannin Sat 13-Mar-21 19:31:08

Lucca I've, out of curiosity, glanced at their " over the top " reactions when they're viewing. Why do they get so carried away like that ? Which is why I don't watch it.

EllanVannin Sat 13-Mar-21 19:32:00

Animated people.

Lucca Sat 13-Mar-21 19:32:56

Ok but it doesn’t really qualify you to denounce the entire programme as lacking intelligence !

Last week Gogglebox was being slated (not on here) because the families were making fun of Harry's interview with James Corden. This week the families show that they believe Meghan and Harry so there is a question about the show being scripted.

Maybe they just believed her.

I think it has got more and more scripted as it's gone along. Now, they narrate everything 'Oh, he's going into the bedroom', 'Look!! She's got a gun!!', and when they watch a film, no matter how famous it is, none of them have seen it, and they all appear to be amazed when the most popular scenes in the history of cinema play out.

I still watch it, as I really like some of the families, but it does put me off. This thread has reminded me that I didn't see it last night, as I was busy, so I'll watch it later this evening.

I love the friends who share a caravan. And the brother and sister are very quick-witted!

I agree with you grumppa it’s probably edited - hence so many participants.

I’m a late comer to this programme (blame lockdown boredom) but I enjoyed last night’s episode. I intend to watch some of the back catalogue on iPlayer next week.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 13-Mar-21 20:23:11

Not scripted but definitely selectively edited

Grandma70s Sat 13-Mar-21 20:33:39

My experience of television has been that they film for ages and ages, but then show only a few minutes of what they’ve filmed. So yes, highly edited.

I love Gogglebox. Lee and Jenny and also the Siddiquis are my favourites. Giles and Mary are such an eccentric couple. The Malones and their huge dogs are always worth watching too. The editors must just select tiny percentages of what is being said as they watch hours of programmes.

You’ll have a job finding it on iplayer, it’s on channel 4. ?

Hetty58 Sat 13-Mar-21 21:15:27

I love it and find it very entertaining. There's some great characters on there.

It can be a shortcut too. Just watch Gogglebox and save endless hours of watching pointless rubbish TV!

Urmstongran Sat 13-Mar-21 21:32:31

Oh ha! Thanks MerylStreep!
As I said I’m new to it.

I always watch Gogglebox but last night disappointed me. I felt every family was scripted or advised what to say. Usually they have diverse opinions. Don't forget they are paid for their participation so they won't want to be unpopular.

Redhead56 Sat 13-Mar-21 22:09:59

Just to add honeyrose no you are not cynical just have an honest opinion and I agree with you.

Alegrias1 Sat 13-Mar-21 22:12:12

So now not only are we slagging off MM, we're accusing members of the public of pretending to believe MM because they'll get paid for it.

Maybe they just believed her.

mokryna Sat 13-Mar-21 22:21:32

I much preferred the programme when it first started, a few years ago. Now it seems to be guided and conversations prepared, with ‘games’ to be played out, before the watching begins.

None of them did regarding her not knowing anything about the RF. They all called BS on that. They were sympathetic to the MH issue and the skin colour issue - but when I watched I perceived a range of reaction similar to that on here. Some parts were believed, some not.
