Is Gogglebox scripted?

I love watching Gogglebox, but I do wonder whether it is scripted or whether it’s the actual opinions of the families featured. I was watching it last night and obviously THE Interview with Harry and Meghan was featured. All of the families/couples seemed to think that Harry & Meghan were in the right and had a genuine axe to grind over their treatment by the Royals. Which lead me to wonder whether the families/couples were told to side with H&M. Not sure whether I’m being rather cynical, but I can’t help wondering. What do you think?

Killen, not Millen

I have dipped into Gogglebox but cannot understand how anyone could be interested in what those families have to say, where on earth do they get them? Most of them must have missed any schooling and tomthink they are paid for it.

I don't watch Gogglebox myself but I do know that one of the Siddiquis is a microbiologist at my local hospital, Steph and Dom ran a £5 million Lutyens designed hotel (and I think Dom went to Eton), Mary Millen writes for The Spectator, Rev Kate Bottly is a broadcaster and erm Rev.

That's just off the top of my head

Yeah, a good cross section of the population, they even give air time to the fat ones. angry

I like GB, a good cross section of the population. There aren’t any I actively dislike, although it makes me slightly cringe seeing those large ladies constantly eating.

Maybe the powers that be are really clever NellG and they threw in just a little bit of disbelief to throw us off the trail.

Who knew there were so many good actors in the general public? ?

And god awful ones winning Oscars...

Most of them must have missed any schooling ??????
What do you base that on?

NellG Sat 13-Mar-21 22:45:22

No idea Alegrias but it's not what I saw when I watched it - I'm assuming that anything other than total condemnation is deemed as full support?

I just end up thinking I must have missed a great big chunk and everyone saw something I didn't ?

That's true NellG. So why are people saying the Gogglebox families were paid to support M & H?
Are we meant to think there's a big plot and everyone's in on it but me ? ?

I do like Gogglebox to a point but I think a lot of it is scripted now. I think the Siddiqui family are the ones who are the most natural, and they make the most intelligent comments too. When I was watching the reactions to ‘the interview’ I thought I would have loved to hear Leon and June’s reactions. I recently watched some of the early series and June and Leon were a delight.

So now not only are we slagging off MM, we're accusing members of the public of pretending to believe MM because they'll get paid for it.

*Maybe they just believed her.*

None of them did regarding her not knowing anything about the RF. They all called BS on that. They were sympathetic to the MH issue and the skin colour issue - but when I watched I perceived a range of reaction similar to that on here. Some parts were believed, some not.

I much preferred the programme when it first started, a few years ago. Now it seems to be guided and conversations prepared, with ‘games’ to be played out, before the watching begins.

Just to add honeyrose no you are not cynical just have an honest opinion and I agree with you.

Redhead56 Sat 13-Mar-21 22:06:18

I always watch Gogglebox but last night disappointed me. I felt every family was scripted or advised what to say. Usually they have diverse opinions. Don't forget they are paid for their participation so they won't want to be unpopular.

Oh ha! Thanks MerylStreep!
As I said I’m new to it.

Hetty58 Sat 13-Mar-21 21:15:27

I love it and find it very entertaining. There's some great characters on there.

It can be a shortcut too. Just watch Gogglebox and save endless hours of watching pointless rubbish TV!

MerylStreep Sat 13-Mar-21 21:11:40

Urmstongran
You’ll have a job finding it on iplayer, it’s on channel 4. ?

I love Gogglebox. Lee and Jenny and also the Siddiquis are my favourites. Giles and Mary are such an eccentric couple. The Malones and their huge dogs are always worth watching too. The editors must just select tiny percentages of what is being said as they watch hours of programmes.

Grandma70s Sat 13-Mar-21 20:33:39

My experience of television has been that they film for ages and ages, but then show only a few minutes of what they’ve filmed. So yes, highly edited.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 13-Mar-21 20:23:11

Not scripted but definitely selectively edited

Urmstongran Sat 13-Mar-21 20:09:59

I love the friends who share a caravan. And the brother and sister are very quick-witted!

I agree with you grumppa it’s probably edited - hence so many participants.

I’m a late comer to this programme (blame lockdown boredom) but I enjoyed last night’s episode. I intend to watch some of the back catalogue on iPlayer next week.

Doodledog Sat 13-Mar-21 19:48:24

I think it has got more and more scripted as it's gone along. Now, they narrate everything 'Oh, he's going into the bedroom', 'Look!! She's got a gun!!', and when they watch a film, no matter how famous it is, none of them have seen it, and they all appear to be amazed when the most popular scenes in the history of cinema play out.

I still watch it, as I really like some of the families, but it does put me off. This thread has reminded me that I didn't see it last night, as I was busy, so I'll watch it later this evening.

Alegrias1 Sat 13-Mar-21 19:35:06

Last week Gogglebox was being slated (not on here) because the families were making fun of Harry's interview with James Corden. This week the families show that they believe Meghan and Harry so there is a question about the show being scripted.

Maybe they just believed her.
