Isle of Wight location mystery - or a false memory?!

I have just spent a delightful few days on the Isle of Wight with an old university friend. The last time was in 2002 (with DH and children) and it was fun re-visiting some of the places from that holiday.
I was keen to have a look at a place I remembered very clearly, or thought I did, and wonder if any local grans or regular visitors can put me out of my misery?
So, we were staying in Ventnor but visited other resorts. I have already ruled out Shanklin. We were at the very end of the esplanade (East I think) and DH and DS1 played a round of either mini golf or putting. Moreorless opposite, by the sea, was a wide area of paving featuring in the centre some sort of inlaid large compass with directional inscriptions e.g. Paris 300 miles, Tokyo etc etc. There coukd have been a bandstand type building there, too.
And then, this is the really hard thing to describe because it was so unusual, the road into the resort from that end of the town came down quite steeply over a sort of bridge beneath which was a stream (?) flowing through lots of rock formations....goodness knows really, like a grotto. I could draw it if I had to!
Any ideas? I need to be put out of my misery even if it turns out to be in Devon or just my fevered imagination.
I look forward to your response!

I don't know the place that you are referring to but you could try looking on Google for a birds eye view of the area and zoom in.

Hope you find it

The grotto you described sounds like Shanklin Chine although you have ruled it out There is or was a crazy golf nearby

Freshwater?

Yes it’s in Ventnor and referred to as the Cascade. Last week there was such torrential rain the waterfall couldn’t cope and rainwater flooded under the road causing major cracks and damage. Poor Ventnor is prone to landslips and damage like this in their much needed tourist season will be a huge blow. ☹️

I wondered if it was Ventnor too as a lot of it seems to be going into the sea sad

Good grief sad that actually looks quite frightening

Thanks - sounds like it must be Ventnor. We obviously didn’t walk far enough and looks like the road may have been closed anyway.

I no longer live there, Jane but a friend put photos on Facebook. Ventnor is my spiritual home. It’s heartbreaking to see.

Gosh I can imagine. I have only ever been as a visitor and it has such charm smile x

Such a shame, I haven`t been for quite a while now, but it was once one of our favourite destinations. Our kids loved the paddling pool shaped like the island.
I was trying to find the place we stayed at the first time we went, but had no luck, it was a flat above a pub called Starks Hotel, at Freshwater Bay, but could I find it? Turned out it`s now a private dwelling.
