Mystery Book

I'm hoping someone can help me find a book from many years ago. I have searched for years and cannot find the name of it.
My memories of it are that it is based in Yorkshire, it is very funny, at the Christmas Nativity the child (who was the author as an adult) arrives at the school in a full brussel sprout outfit as his mother had misheard Sprite for Sprout.
It was the story of the childs life with his working class lovely family.
Has anyone any clue what I am talking about?
Would dearly love to find it.
Thanks.

I think that the book is "Lost for Words" by Deric Longden. It was also a TV film starring Pete Postlethwaite and Thora Hird. They lived in Chesterfield in Derbyshire. I love the book .. and the film.

Deric Longden was a good writer. I love the teaming up of Pete Postlethwaite and Thora Hird. Lost for Words is also very good. Thora plays Pete's mother and when he asks her if she would rather be buried or cremated her reply "I don't know surprise me" still makes me chuckle. Gentle old fashioned stories but funny too.

Yes, I thought of Gervaise Phinn too, he was a schools inspector in Yorkshire who wrote quite a few whimsical books about Yorkshire schools/ pupils.
