Just how stupid can people be?

I've just read a news item.......a number of motorists followed a tanker for some distance.........to a building site. The tanker was carrying mortar but the motorist assumed it was loaded with fuel.
One of the motorists then had the nerve to berate the tanker driver for not stopping to say what his tanker was loaded with.

Oh for goodness sake even I would know the difference between cement tanker and a petrol tanker.

At least this is the kind of stupidity we can laugh at. I still can’t get over the fact that a crowd of locals attacked the home of a paediatrician in the mistaken belief that he was a paedophile! The combination of ignorance, stupidity and a belief that one is right can be incredibly dangerous

* Or even something who sees a queue and thinks they'll join it.*
I believe something similar happened in Russia during the war; people would join a queue on the off-chance that whatever was selling was something they could use.

People in general do seem to be stupid. In N Ireland we are applying for a free cash card to help the economy.Facebook is up in arms with people complaining at having to give a Nat Ins no and email.Invasion of privacy, they can keep their card, give it to the nhs,etc and surprise that the card has not arrived when this is only the first week.
The gov has all our info anyway so why not be grateful and accept the small cash gift which will probably be paid from our taxes.

In a mildly hysterical way. Actually we should be quite scared. These people vote. They staff hospitals and schools. They drive cars on busy roads.

This morning I popped over (as in walked) to the local garage to get some milk and while I was there had a quick chat with a friend who works there. A man queueing beside us said "Oh thank goodness there was no queue today. Yesterday I had to queue for an hour for £10 worth of petrol to fill up. But you have to keep doing it don't you, in case there is no fuel tomorrow." Had anyone mentioned that he was part of the problem and the reason why people who need fuel can't get in the garage he wouldn't have understood a word.

Very, very, very !

GreenGran78 Mon 04-Oct-21 19:08:10

I popped into our little local Tesco (on foot) for some milk. The queue for the pumps was right up the road, causing a lot of traffic congestion. In spite of this motorists were filling up their tank then wandering around doing some shopping, leaving their car blocking a pump. It would only have taken a minute to move their car a few yards to the parking area, making room for someone else to fill up. Idiots!

MamaCaz Mon 04-Oct-21 21:49:44

There was a thread specifically about this some time ago, and I seem to remember it being said by quite a few people that you should not move your car from a pump until you have paid and that even if you do, the next car cannot fill up any quicker because that pump will not work again until you have paid for your fuel.

GreenGran78 Mon 04-Oct-21 22:06:31

So you pay for your fuel, move your car, then do your shopping. It's simple common sense in the present circumstances.

kircubbin2000 Mon 04-Oct-21 22:39:51

This is the same mentality as people at the supermarket check out who watch their goods go through then start to slowly fill bags before starting to look for their wallet.

I think that is correct, MamaCaz.

The pump will not be activated again until the fuel is paid for; the assistant checks which pump you used too.

The simple solution Greengran78 is to pay for the petrol, move your car and then go back and do your shopping.

When there are queues for the pumps, whether long queues, as at the moment, or the queues that build up at busy times. It is ordinary good manners and thoughtfulness for others.

Same with people who park their car at the car wash queue, then go off and do their shopping, coming back laden with groceries and their car wash token, drives DH insane.

Our son suggested there should be a minimum charge of £30. I know this would only touch the sides in some cars, but may deter people from putting in dribbles just to keep topping up.

Hetty58 Tue 05-Oct-21 08:54:57

LauraNorder, I'm constantly surprised by exactly how stupid, selfish and short-sighted people can really be - especially when they crow about it!

That doesn't sound very fair.

£30 is nearly a full tank in some small cars, including mine!

And what about those who buy fuel by the can for lawn mowers, chain saws, generators etc. that might be essential for their work? Why should they suddenly have to pay £30 if they don't usually buy that much at one go?

Shropshirelass Tue 05-Oct-21 10:02:34

I read this but assumed it was fake news and read it as a joke?

It was just a suggestion. It’s bound to have flaws I agree, but it’s a start. It may discourage people from putting £5 worth in, which my son had witnessed.

As for people who need it for their work, I agree. Perhaps concessions can be made, as for the emergency services. Our gardener uses a petrol lawnmower. Next time he comes, I’ll ask him how it all affected him.

Daisend1 Tue 05-Oct-21 16:45:34

How? without difficulty it appears when you observe or hear the lengths of stupidity in our midst.
Most clearly an 'epidemic' of it going around at the moment and No it does not begin with the letter C ending with* D*

grin Gabrielle!

Janejudge my local FB pages are an altogether more sedate affair. This morning’s excitement was a report of a cow heading westwards along a busy road. That post was followed shortly by another saying the beast was now heading east. ?

Following my own post from yesterday, today there are two cows on the loose in the same place! ? ? It’s all go here. grin

Regarding lawnmowers, a friend was told by their garage that the new E10 fuel isn’t suitable for all mowers. Her Dh put it in their mower anyway and sure enough, it packed up half way through doing the lawn.

Me too Shropshirelass
My immediate thought on reading it was that it was a windup.
Has the original poster of the thread come back? Probably not!

^I even wonder if it is true, as the internet survives on these sorts of tales that so often turn out to be the fruit of someone's imagination.^

Maybe Mr Anderson was hallucinating,

Not a wind up.

JenniferEccles Wed 06-Oct-21 15:12:36

Oh it was genuine! Apologies OP if you are reading but it did sound too extraordinary to be true didn’t it?
What seemed to confirm the ‘wind up’ thought for me was the fact that, in the eyes of one following motorist, the cement lorry driver should have stopped , got out of his cab and told all the drivers behind what he was carrying!
A wonderful story!
