Xmas cards 2021?

Wide awake so up in the night drinking tea & looking at gransnet- at 4.30am!
Last year we cut our Xmas card list drastically - only sent to aged/single friends & family.
Think with the Covid problems it all seemed so wasteful on paper, card, postage etc when charities were struggling so much.
We e mailed Xmas greetings to those we could & also explained we were making charity donations instead of cards. Didn’t want them to think we hadn’t just forgotten them or had run out of time! Sent a few free e cards too - to those I thought would like them.
Seems a bit sad to lose the tradition but will do the same this year.
What are other Grans doing?

Stopped sending xmas cards years ago, well apart from my grandson whos now 7. When I moved into sheltered 7 years ago I got more xmas cards than Ive ever had in my life it seemed to be the thing round here. I never sent any so over the years the number of cards I recieved has gone down to zero! seems like they have the attitude that because I didnt send one back they stopped sending me one.

Every year I make or paint all my cards it gives me pleasure and everyone seems to like them some friends have told me they always keep them
I love sending cards and I love receiving them it’s the one part of Christmas I enjoy it is definitely dying out the young don’t send cards at all and I think within about ten years it will be gone
I dislike e-cards you can’t hang them on the wall and somehow seem impersonal
It’s one tradition I will keep going until I can’t I still receive an send about 40 cards and I won’t stop
I don’t like this new way of ‘I m giving to charity instead’ you can still give to charity and send greetings
Yes postage is awful but I make allowances for it

I m sure most people will agree with you, not me, but there we go that’s my take and I m sticking to it ?

I still do cards and enjoy the practice. Far fewer nowadays as my friends and family have sadly depleted. Still receive them too and find that a decidedly pleasant contact.

I still do Xmas cards....charity ones and special ones for the family.

I'm another Christmas card enthusiast and hope we'll receive a good selection again this year. I love the different designs and it's heartwarming to feel remembered. Although it's not a cheap exercise at least it helps keep the economy going!

I still do cards and have always really enjoyed it. I also include a letter, which the year I stopped it lots of people queried why I wasn't doing it so I started doing them again. Feel free to judge me wink I have written nearly all my cards and have bought the special Christmas stamps. I have an address database so labels are printed with a Christmassy design and stickers are put on the envelope. Cards, stickers etc. are bought in Sales throughout the year. I actually had overbought over the past few years so yesterday went to a local Charity Shop with a tube of Christmas wrapping paper which I didn't want/need and a lot of Christmas cards. The CS Helpers were delighted. Picture of my cards and the lovely Christmas design stamps, ready to be united!

I’ve stopped sending Christmas cards as I sometimes feel it’s competitive…
I have always, and have carried on, sent a letter to my uncles and aunts (all 16 of them all now deceased), family friends and real friends. I mail most of them these days as I find the cost of postage prohibitive. I don’t expect any cards but receive about 30.
I do make my own cards and have since I was a child.

I have cut down on cards, and hand out ones whenever I can to save postage.
Hate the thought of getting them written on, but not so bad once I get started,
Include a few letters to distant relatives.
A few less every year due to ‘natural wastage’.
They do look cheerful when hung up, I use them for shopping lists afterwards.

Sending cards as normal, family and close friends as opposed to everyone I've ever met. I nearly bought some more as they were so lovely but I just know that I have more than enough already. I also paint a few, which reminds me....... ?

I'd rather receive a card than a gift. They make such a cheerful display during December too.

I enjoy sending and receiving Christmas cards. I'm about to start writing mine as our youngest daughter borrowed and lost my address book last year so I will have to play detective on internet searches for people.
I don't think actual postage is too expensive when a card travels from say Portsmouth to Edinburgh. It's just the big quantity of stamps in one go.

Grandmadinosaur Wed 10-Nov-21 07:58:22

I still send cards although it gets less each year. I love to find nice ones for close family and special friends.
This post had reminded me to have my usual November trip to the Post Office for my stamps.

I still send card's and always include a little letter.
I love receiving a card especially if I don't recognise the writing on envelope ! I've noticed that long distance friend's do telephone once card has been received!

Same here.

I like sending and receiving cards, but I always find the e-cards a disappointment as I can’t display them like ordinary ones. Convenient and cheaper for the sender but a bit of a cop-out I feel, though at least I have been remembered. I’ve bought my cards but won’t be writing them for a while!

Witzend Wed 10-Nov-21 08:37:36

We still send them, and like receiving them. They form part of our decorations, blu-tacked to painted surfaces.
We only buy charity cards though.

The list gets a bit shorter each year, either because someone’s died, or because we’ve otherwise lost touch for so long, there seems no point any more.

TBH the two couples I know very well who’ve stopped sending them, saying they’re donating to charity instead, could very well afford to do both (before anyone suggests otherwise, I do know this) so I suspect they just can’t be bothered - admittedly it can be a bit of a chore to write them.
Dh always needs quite a bit of prompting to write the few he has to do.

I like to send and receive cards. If nothing else, it's a way of finding out if any friends or family are no longer with us!!

sodapop Wed 10-Nov-21 08:50:16

I love sending and receiving cards as well. Its enjoyable to open up a greeting from a friend or relative and then have a lovely cheerful display. I agree with BlueBelle about the charitable donation. E-cards are not the same at all. My children & grandchildren don't send cards except to me because they know I like them.

travelsafar Wed 10-Nov-21 08:52:43

I still send cards, yes the stamps are expensive but it is only once a year!!! I hate to think the tradition may die out.sad they cheer the place up and its lovely to hear the postman at the door. As long as I'm able I will send them.

Witzend Wed 10-Nov-21 08:55:57

I started writing mine the other night - I had found some out of date mulled wine spice ‘teabags’ and there was half a bottle of red that needed drinking, so I put them together. ?

It felt quite Christmassy and I crossed at least 20 off the list.

eazybee Wed 10-Nov-21 09:06:10

I shall continue to send the same number of cards this year as in previous years, about ten by post, the rest by hand.

LilacChaser Wed 10-Nov-21 09:10:00

I still do Christmas cards.

We no longer have contact with people who have given up on it and decided to send to charity instead. As Christmas cards were our only means of contact anyway, perhaps it doesn't really matter. Bit sad, though.

Scones Wed 10-Nov-21 09:22:47

Loved your photo Notgran. It looks like you get a lot of fun out of your Christmas preparations.

I so enjoy sending and receiving Christmas cards and they make the place look so festive. I always buy charity cards - this year The British Hedgehog Preservation Society. The post is expensive but it's a small price to let someone know you're thinking of them and to know someone has remembered you.

After Christmas I cut the cards up to make gift tags for the following year.

The electronic ones do nothing for me. Just not the same 'twinkliness' or level of thought behind it.

henetha Wed 10-Nov-21 10:16:09

I've reduced my card list drastically. but still send a few .
I always buy charity cards now so at least feel that helps a bit.
